I'v just brought a mk11 1979 1600 sport it handlers great and its in origional condition the 1600 gives it good power with no problem spining wheels defently going to buy another
I recommend the Mk2 Escort... I run a '80 1.3L 4 door, and it's almost never let me down. Damn good handler (cornering is supurb with handbrake assistance!!!) and versatile (Large boot, good simplistic (and unoffensive) interior to throw good seatcovers and retro carpets over 70's brown vinyl).... Additionally, even though if it is mostly stock, it gets looks continually from people. For the nowdays uncommon-ness of mk2 Escorts (most unfortunately have been thrashed to death), I always get people for some reason complimenting me on it...
BTW... There was a reason Ford fitted fixed quarterlight windows in the front doors! One can easily fit 6x9 speakers there!
A hint now - To find out the very day one was made, simply remove the plastic 'Ford' logo cap off the steering wheel. I discovered a stamp underneath indicating that the car was built on "14 Nov 1979".

I purchased a 1988 (F Plate) Basic Escort 2 door popular, no frills, but this car has done only 42000 miles (service records and all MOT's as proof) one elderly owner from new, paint work was a little faded, but T cut and polish soon restored to immaculate condition, I paid £250, the car drives like new, engine easy to work on, spare parts are readily available, only problem been with drivers door lock (replaced barrel) cheap insurance and tax, very economical, only four speed though, not a motorway cruiser.

Had a couple of 'scorts, 1600 mk4, and 1400 mk5. Both suffered with electrical problems, rust and noise, not to mention poor performance. Do yourselves a favour & buy a Rover, much more car for the money. 9.8 seconds to 60mph from a 1.4 16v. Look out Mr XR3i!
