I own a 1987 XR3i. Previous owners have bashed it, burnt it...
Still is a great car. 1.6i gives a hell of a thrust on highways, but it does get too hot driving in a city. I've had to change a lot of things: exhaust tube, battery...
Last week the clutch started squeeking, so I guess that'll be next. I'm trying to do it my self, just for fun. Does anybody know of a guide of some sort just in case it gets too complicated. If you find/have anything about this, please mail me (info at reven dot org).
If you can get a cheap 1.6 or 1.8 XR3i without too much km, buy it and have fun.
i bought a mk1 74 escort for $100. i have not stopped doing burnouts. i can also get it into second. its only stock 1300cc HC. i know you can put worked two litres in them. someone tell me if it bolts straight in with gearbox or if mods are reuierd. if this is what it can do stock, i want to see what a worked two litre does for me. you cant beet a rear wheel drive. Go Ford.
1972 1100L 4 dr saphire blue metallic 69000mls and the best car ever built !!!!! a few bits becoming harder to find , but still the best value for money (and for arse out driving!!!)
I Have a 1975 Mk1 Escort and I am having a hard time trying to find parts for it. If anyone can help me please e-mail me [Log in to view email] Justene
i have a mk4 xr with modded engine, apart from the crap gearbox this is an rs beater, and im sick ov racing all the new saxo's and novas cos they cant take the pace unless they have a rocket up there arse
i got an 2001 esscort and its still asy to find parts for it. all you got to do is look around at the right time and right place.all of my parts are from the internet and when you go to cardomain.com. you'll understand what i mean. and to fix it up you got to get parts that will fit another car and make sure it can also fit your scort. so tats my advice to you from me.
i picked up a g plate xr3i recently for £50,despite lying unused for two years it started first turn of the key after being jumpstarted, apart from small niggles, one caliper pat seized, petrol pipe rusted through, tail light connections needing cleaned up,i was qiut pleased with it but as the car was bought for trackdays it was found to be too slow on the straights i decided to get something quicker, but this was brought forward by myself rolling it at the track, nonetheless while it lasted it was good fun and the best £50 i have spent in a long time dont be put off buying a cheap one as a runner as you could do a lot worse.
i own a b reg 84 cabriolet in gold lowered it was in good condition when i got it but it met a taxi and it had to have a new front end i did that and was told for the reg it should be a mark 3 but all the parts i have bought r mark 4 can some one tell me when the first cabriolet was made.email at mcmenamin @ tiscali . co . uk
Sorry GreaseMonkey, do your research... Mk4 from '86 onwards... I have an '87 Mk4 XR3i convertible, and I wouldn't recomment one to someone who isn't handy with a spanner... had it six months, apart from the standard service bits it's had new piston rings, new gearbox and a new camshaft. The interior bits are really hard to get hold of now and quite a lot of the plastic bits are starting to deteriorate with age. Drives really well, grips corners nicely and is a cheap cabriolet(which is nice!). Could be cheaper on fuel, but I guess it wasn't as expensive then! Better get those overalls on if you want one of these!
Sorry but the mrk4 escort is from 1990 onwards the car u are all talking about is a late mrk3. I have a 1.3 L which in all honesty is a bag of s*** but it has never broken down on me and for the money it holds the road like like a race car - you can go absoulty flat out and it will never let you down - Ideal first car if only the insurance wasn't so high due to the fact that in most situations it is easyer to get in to the thing with out the keys!
XR3I - this has been an excellent car, never broken down on me, only a rear wheel bearing worn. The acceleration is good for the size of the engine, replaced cam with a standard ford one, as the car had done high mileage - what a difference, would recommend to anyone, truly excellent cars as long as they havent been thrashed by boy racers
I had a mark 2 1300 popular which I bought off my dad in 1990.He had bought it new in 1979.It was hearing aid beige, but was a cracking car.Very simple and reliable and would cruise (albeit noisily) at 75 mph all day,and give you 35mpg.It had a yearly main service when I had it ,plus fresh Duckhams 20w/50 every three months. When some idiot (who hadn't put his handbrake on properly on a hill) rolled into it in 1992 (writing it off)it had 170000 miles on its original engine...Not bad.
Yeah, I own a battered old 2-dr, race rallied and possibly rolled by a sucession of owners before me. Currently running a 1600 Kent with side-drafts; a real old warhorse - it's still a very reliable and FUN car to compete in.
I own a b reg 1.6 ghia and i love it it,s quick, sticks to the road, relliable so far anyway :) and very comftable things to look out for are knocking when pulling away and rust under the bonnet. mine starts first turn of the key every morning even on frosty mornings. If anyone knows the standard BHP of this car please could you let me know thanks Graham
I have a lhd mk2 escort 2 door 1.3 auto, which i am in spain currently converting to a 2 litre pinto and 5 speed box. the cars minted and itl go like a rocket from Johnny Speed
I bought my 1.6 for £20, yes £20, there were some problems with it, but I still got it home, 70 miles, so far spent £50 fixing it and there is a massive difference
I bought a H reg Eclipse for £23 of a work mate. A further £600.00 was spent to bring it upto scratch. Performance was so so (Had a Carlton GSI before)and the economy was pretty good. Too small for a family so it was taken off the road and now sits up the drive. I added clear front indicators, white dials and XR3 alloys and a few other bits. It is finished in the metalic blue and still looks a good looking car. Sure to be a classic of the future!
My XR3I has been totally reliable, it is quick for a 1.6, although at motorway speeds it can be a bit noisy, saying that though you never have to change out of fifth, only for the most severe hills. An excellent car thats still quick today, quicker than the 1.6 and 1.8 zetec escorts
My XR3i cost £600 6 months ago. i love it, looks wicked, but...... reliability is shocking. i am an amateur rally driver, so i do tend to thrash it, but it's cost me nearly £1600 in second hand parts... two clutches, gearbox, seals gaskets piston rings, belts, starter motor, battery, exhaust, alternator, distributor, coil, plugs, radiator, interior stuff, electrics, rust in places. and it still stalls at traffic lights every so often. however, it's now got a sierra cossy rear whale tail on it. sweet car.
