Just bought myself a 1991 RS Turbo in Red and guess what - No rust at all, not even around the filer cap. It's been modified all round apart from the original bodykit (Looks great standard). It's been boosted to 170 bhp which is neck-breakingly quick and with the lowered suspension it handles like a dream. I reckon I've got an absolute bargain for my money and I'd recommend the RST to any petrolhead.
I WOULD NOT CHANGE MY MK1 FIESTA L FOR ANYTHING ON TWO WHEELS! MY BABY HAS BEEN SO LOYAL TO ME AND I LOVE THE CHARACTER. IT IS ALMOST CHEEKY TO LOOK AT ANY ECONOMICAL, FUN TO DRIVE AND RELIABLE. IT LOOKS GOOD AND SURE DOES STAND THE TEST OF TIME. ABSOLUTELY ACE LITTLE RUNNER!!!
I bought a 1978 1.1L in June 2002, and ran it for two months and 3,000 miles without a hitch. The car cost me £100 with 8 months MOT and 2 months tax, and had 21,000 miles on the clock - this was believed genuine, although there was no service history it had one owner until 2000 and the interior and mechanics were mint.
The body was beginning to lose the fight and I found out yesterday from the friend I sold it to that it failed the MOT so it's days are numbered. However, I'll never forget it was cheap, reliable fun!
JEZZ UNDER THE BONNET PASSEGER SIDE AT THE BACK OF THE FUSE BOX THERES A BIG RUBBER GROMMET THAT CAN LET WATER THOUGH SOMTIMES IF NOT TIGHT ENOUGH THE WATER TRICKLES DOWN YOUR CARS WIRIN THEN - OTHERWISE I DON'T KNOW#
there not really that bad at all.i got a 1.1i.well slow i admit.petrols good and gets to 95 alright.wateva u do,dnt race anything except an older fiesta.or maybe a 1.2 nova packed with 5 people.
The carpet in the passenger footwell of my 1.6S is permanantly wet and has been like this for a couple of months. ive checked the sunroof and window ceils but can't find the leak. Please help my footwell is now permanantly full of newspaper
I bought my J reg 1.6S 7 Months ago for £600 and i think its great. It goes brilliantly starts every time and can beat 205 GTI's on country lanes. Ive done 2400 miles in it and im still on "L"'s. My car has been alot of places in 7 Months. However it drinks fuel when doing short journeys less than 10 miles. Long Journeys its great (100 mile to a quarter tank). If there one for sale get it you will have alot of fun!
Bought a 1.6s around a year ago. Done 130,000 miles and drives like its only done 40k! Shares the same engine, gearbox and braking components as the previous mk2 XR2 so its quite nippy.
These cars tend to rust around the fuel filler caps and sills. Mines been welded, although not much, and I've rubbed down and resprayed both the bonnet and the rear panel (where I suffered rusty filer-cap syndrome).
All in all I'm very impressed. Engine is a little smokey when first started but runs like a dream. Interiors not too bad... you're better off looking for either a late 1.6s or one with the 'e-X-ecutive' pack (which makes it a 1.6sx) and adds leccy windows and locking.
I'm pleased with mine, could do with a new engine as this ones a little tired but it does the job and the bodywork is pretty solid. Much better quality than the previous fiesta models. Car is also easily-modifyable :-)
I've got a 1.3 festa in java blue its a great car and i have recently had a xr2 kit put on along with a BB exhaust and k&N Bolt on filter it sound great, acceleration has improved and looks especially the only problem is cause its a 5 door the arches off the kit don't fit so i am having to get some rs2000 skirts and mis out the arches... any suggestions?
I own a mk1 1.1 popular plus in two tone biege and brown completely standard never let me down its good for 100mph and has done 110mph sadly i crashed it and have a mk3 fiesta 1.1i which isnt a patch on the old one hopefully i will restore the old mk1 one in a couple of years to top form
We have a B reg 1.1 Fiesta it hates starting, has a stiff gearchange, rusts like mad, the door locks have a mind of their own and at 70 is so noisy the radio is ineffectial. Sadly my girlfriend loves it and even i admit it does give quite a bit of fun
Have a 1.0 H'reg Fiesta Bonus, O.K it is definately not quick 17.5secs to 60mph, but cheaper on tax and insurance for a first car! Never had any major problems even though i have done 15,000 miles in 10 months! Cant fault the drive compared to many other cars of this age, and i'm a mechanic so i have driven most cars you can think of. If you have any major problems with this car then it is a sign of neglect! The only things that I have done to this car are purley to tickle a couple of extra bhp out of the rattler! Great car you wont find a better car for the money or age!
Owned 1.6S. Lots of power, cheapest parts, cheap insurance.Cheap to run on long jurney(40-45mpg),expensive round town(30mpg on good day). Fun car to drive but didn`t like the wet much. Just bin the Ford stereo that comes with it.
nippy yes but its about the only good thing going 4 xr2i s handling utter shite especially if wet. Reliable...>> not a hope cos its ford!! dash rattles sunroof leaks noisy on the road clutch squeals etc.. seats really uncomfortable tacky plastic trim that falls off if u look at it too hard. engin drinks oil and petrol and eats rocker gaskets for breakfast! only buy 1 if u r always late 4 work>>> overtake n e thing ! or if u hav a lot of money u need 2 get rid off!!
Ive got a MK3 Fiesta L (firts car), i bought it with 44k on the clock and the only thing ive had to get for it was a new baterry. Whats the deal with the oil burning and petrol drinking, not with my car! One modification which i recommend (which is free to do) is to take out the origional air filter and remove the long section which goes down to the raidiator, with the pipe coming from the heatshield. Dump the long part by breaking it off, if the performance gain is not good enough then there is a lowered section on the air filter. This lower sections droops at the bottom, cut this of and u get a ROARRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! and a noticeable power increase.
After many years of hunting down and buying dog mk1's i have finaly found a minter of a motor, a BLACK 1983 MK1 XR2. AND ITS ALL MINE! . SEE YA ON THE ROAD VERY SOON WITH A RST LUMP.
OK, so the CVH engine is smoother, gives better fuel economy etc...
But, because they were made out of cr@p steel they rust quicker than you can patch them ! Also, thanks to rubbishy or worn out carbs, the CVH hardly ever realises its full potential.
The mk2 XR2 is fun, its incredibly modifyable but for some deranged reason insurance companies seem to confuse them with BMW Z3's.
"1000 per year for a 15 yr old XR2 thats falling apart at the seams. hmmmm.."
One plus point: The interiors. All the 'high' model interiors are great.
OK, so I've focused on the higher end mk2 here but what else would you buy?
Best of the lot? The 1400S. Goes like stink, looks like it could scare your granny half up a tree and is cheap to insure and run, thanks to a very nice 1.4 engine. Sadly these are usually the 'rusty-est'
If you can find an ultra-rare olympus edition 1400s you even get a full RS turbo style bodykit.
Cars I personally owned: 1.4s and XR2. PS: Don't buy a 1.3, these were replaced by the 1.4 engined cars (such as the L) and as such the insurance etc.. is the same.
Used to own a mk1 XR2. Now I'll never ove another !
The handling is the best of ALL the XR based fiestas. Much harder than the mk2 and mk3 varieties. Throttle response is better than the newer cars too. It may be slower but it feels great. No lag here.. put your foot down and feel the road.
With the exception of my Mini I have never felt so "at one" with the road. My one cost £300 but ti was immaculate, sailed through its MOT with nothing but a duff wheelbearing. Easy to work on, great original golf-esque styling and reasonable interior.
Only 4 speed gearbox but 2nd is so lenghtened it's great for overtaking. Sadly you do run out of space in 4th with no extra gears to jump to. Mine was good for 115mph, and as quick off the line as the later mk2 version (because it's lighter). If you can get an original one with interior intact - GARAGE IT. These are the future classics.
Complaints? Too damn hard for long distance driving. Bonnet mounts can bend and drop at the front far to easily. Crappy fuel economy (you'd get better from a tank).
Summary.. The most fun hot-hatch of them all. OK, so its not a 205 gti.. but its not meant to be!
