Vectra Jan 2001 Auto 1.8
Handbrake danger quirk.Anyone else met this?....
You are going uphill.
Apply footbrake to stop at lights.
Apply handbrake to normal pull pressure.
Release footbrake.
Roll backwards !!!
THEN you can find another notch on handbrake,at same or even less pull pressure, but it might be too late !

May vary with weather conditions
Let me know.

I have owned my vectra 1.8ls estate for 2 years now. I rate the vectra as a very reliable economical car. Yes I had a problem with the management light and found the problem to be the timing belt and or tensioner. For all those gripers out there spending hundreds of pounds to your main dealers or local garages to rectify sensors, (not the problem) the sensors are working correctly telling you that the belt or the tension of the belt is inncorrect, hence the sensor doing its job!!!!! When the light comes on most garages blame the cam sensor......Incorrect!!!! the sensor is working telling you there is a problem with the belt tension....HELLO!!! The sensor detects the timing between the two cams, and if the valve timing between the two cams becomes erratic or too far out the management light does its job to tell you and or the mechanic this.....these guys are ripping you off!!!. Another thing is yes the idle valve does fail but is very easy to change and fairly cheap too. TIP.before you purchase and install an idle valve try this.... clean the area around the butterfly on the intake....this builds up with debris and causes the butterfly to stay slightly open and causes the engine to stall!! The garage will blame the idle valve because it wont idle...DUH! Believe me the vectra is a good all round car, the standard equipment for a british car is very good and usefull....TRY this one on your vectra...you get out the car and damn!! the front window is down...what do you do? jump back in and press the window button???? or do you lock the door with the key and hold the key at the 10'o'clock position, hey presto the window closes, how many vauxhall owners knew that??? Dont knock the vectra I dont, and the next car will be another vectra...I hope this info will help vectra owners from being took for a ride...Happy drivin!!!!

bought a R98 2l TD at auction with 120k on clock for standard price. Chuffed...at first!
After replacing the battery every day for 6 weeks i'm starting to get a bit p***** off! Local garage have tried everything, alternator off and checked etc etc. battery light goes off when maintaining 3000 revs. Like WHAT?
Anyone got any ideas apart from a gallon of petrol and a match?!?!?!?
Im at my wits end, and as afore mentioned. It aint an easy car to push!

I bought a Vauxhall Vectra 1996 make. It's caused me nothing but trouble. The engine light started coming on, got this fixed. The car occasionally loses power when you try to accelerate, staying at 40 mph. You have to stop the car and restart it to overcome this. The central locking also started going wonkey, with one of the doors remaining permanentley locked.

The end of the road for me was after three consecutive failed MOT's, which my local Vauxhall dealership had prep'ed the car for me each time. The Vauxhall garage couldn't solve a sinking brake pedal problem. I was informed that the ABS may have failed at the MOT centre. This transpired to be the case(apparently this is an issue with all vauxhall cars..it costs £1,600 to replace, more than the value of my car)

I've basically given up on the car although it cost me a bloody fortune.

Anyone know a good make of car???

I bought a '96 N reg V6 SRi in 2000 3rd (32k miles) owner and had no trouble until I took it to the vauxhall dealer in an effort to keep the log book stamped to date. STEVENS VAUXHALL of CRAWLEY messed it up on 3 occasions and caused the replacement of parts that wouldn't have required replacing if they did the job properly in the first place. The reason I went back (stupidly) 3 times was that each time I went, I thought they couldn't be as inept.... I was wrong. They are the biggest cowboys I have encontered, even worse than Ford!! Vauxhall are EXCELLENT at selling, VERY BAD at after sales service.
I now have an intermittent hesitancy that occurs at any speeds, hot or cold, and it feels like sharp engine braking which can last for anything from a few seconds to a whole journey of 1 hour!! The engine management light comes is flashing like a disco light and the INTELLIGENT "TECHNICIANS" at vauxhall told me (or rather their computer told them) it was a vacuum problem. Their computer DIDN'T know where the problem was, therefore the "TECHNICIAN" didn't have a clue apart from taking every hose off the car which would cost me £70/hr labour. Imagine my thoughts. Very disconcerting, has anybody else had this problem, and if so how did you fix it?
Once I've fixed it, I'll run it into the ground over 2 years and scrap it as I won't be buying another vauxhall, and I wouldn't want anyone else to have the mispleasure of owning this one... The less vauxhalls on the road, the better. Actually, less Vauxhall dealers in the world would be a better solution.

I have owned a 97 SRi for 3 years now and have had the Cam belt go and the clutch, the drivers door motor and two sensors, others than that at 155,000 miles it is still going strong. I would buy another of this type but I would not buy a new 2002/3 model.

Vauxhall are shite! I made two mistakes 1) I bought my Vectra 99T reg from the Great Trade Centre car supermarket in North London - NEVER EVER buy from a car supermarket. 2) I bought a Vauxhall Vectra. I've had nothing but grief with it. It also gets left behind by old cars - useless - don't make the same 2 mistakes I did

I had a '98 SRI, drove it for 60k miles under varying conditions. At 59500 miles the irmsher rear box went, other than that no problems whatsoever. Went great, good fuel ecomomy (c 38mpg average), comfortable and IMHO very nice to look at. Would I own another one, yep! I traded it in for a '99 model SRi V6 and I'm just as happy with that after another 60k miles even though it hasn't quite managed to match the reliability of the first one (EGR valve went and DIS pack on one cylinder bank). Will I buy the 2002 vectra - I test drive one and see
