I might have been unlucky, but this is a known problem mondeo hunters should be aware of. I bought a 2.5 24v and driving 'sensibly' it was ok on the petrol (considering u got a V6 lump under the hood) handeling wasn't to be moaned at with 17" alloys and the leather interior has an executive feel to it + ur in to the BMW n Merc class if u like to race down the motorway or off at the lights!!! THE PROBLEM: Coolant system faliure (more info can be found browsing round on the web) which meant at 90 mph big engine got hot v quickly... new head gasket... £800 repair bill... I gonna have a crack at it myself but save yourself the hassel and check regularly n keep an eye on the tempperature guage (also make sure it working) It was just one of those unfortunate things otherwise I can't fault it! TIP: Get an RS front bumper n sum big alloys...looks the muts nuts!

I own a rare 4 door "red panel" 2.0 glx and it is great. Its stelth at traffic lights. Pull up against the average kev car and nothing says that its a 2.0litre or a 1.6 (apart from the muffler position). Drop the clutch and its a different story. Great handler too.
10 years on and its still as quiet as when new. This is due to regular oil changes with nothing but the best Mobil 1. Doesn't burn a drop either.

on my 3rd mondeo - had a 95 2l ghia, a 98 2.5 si and now have a 96 2l ghbiax - prob is it has a nasty rattling which is worse when warm - anyone got any ideas what it could be ? (Ive had 3 garages look at it and none will commit to an explanation - has 8 hydraulic tappets replaced but sounds no different - getting fed up now and considering scrapping it and buying a vw ! if you have any suggestions as to cause of noise (I thin k is oil pump or small end bearing on way out) pls email [Log in to view email] thanks

Running a 1998 1.8 td estate, loads of boot space, reliable - currently on 99000 miles and all it had during last year was a headlight bulb. Change the oil every 6000 and cam belts every 50000 and these things will go on for ever. Performance is slow but it will sit at 80 all day and unless you are a max power boy its quick enough in town.

i own a sept 02 2ltr cdi mondeo hatch the performance is brill. however the road handling of the new mondeo is some what of a joke. whilst driving on damp or wet roads the corning can be frighting. only two weeks ago upon leaving a right hand bend at 30 mph in damp conditions the car decided to spin off the road without any warning and ended up buried in ploughed field, the car is currently being inspected to source the cause of this problem , be warned.

Points to watch out for, with the mondeos zetec engine,is that the correct oil,10/30,and no its not 10/40,,as 10/40 is slightly to thick. The manuals are wrong!! Yes thats right wrong! When first put into production ford had big trouble with the valves sticking,,so they just put in thinner oil(10/30) and the trouble went away!!
Ive owned my 1996 2.0LX (16V ZETEC) for around 2.5 yrs,and its never broken down, apart from battery failure.I wouldnt say its asports car,but will easily beat any young man in his citreon saxo vtr!The engine is great, quite, starts 1st time every time, its quite agood car.Things to watch out for,is allways when buying your zetec mondeo,is to change the timing belt as soon as poss,,and allways change the oil,at least every six months,,and insist on the correct grade of oil,and good quality oil.DO NOT use the wrong grade as this may cause one of the 16 valves to stick, which cam be costly to repair.Remember also to change all timing belt idlers, plus tension edler, along with the new belt.Dont just change the belt,as asiezed idler will only cause it to break. My only bug bare with the car is that aclutch change is expensive, not for the clutch parts, but for the labour involved with getting to the gear box,to remove it,to get to the clutch it self. But agood clutch should last the live of,,or however long you own the car,as long as its driven correctly.

I own a 95' mondeo v6 base model and the only bad thing i can say about the car in four years of driving it,is that the handling is really bad. I know that the car is 50 kg heavier than the 2.0 model mainly down to the gargantuan engine. But the engine is great, not having given me any problems at all. The interior is dull but the body hugging seats certainly make up for that.Deprieciation is a real killer as i bought it for £7500 and now with 64K it is valued at £2000.

I got myself a W reg 2.0 zetec in january. It handles, it goes, it stops eventually.
My only bugbear is the deeply uncomfortable seat. So far I have had a new base and a new back. Now the local dealer are going to give me a new seat. They replaced the base to help the back secure properly; they replaced the back because the padding wasn't attaching to the frame; now they are trying to sort the lumbar support (on minimum setting it still digs into my back). The service manager let slip that seats cause him no end of grief.
If anybody is thinking about buying a mondeo I would recommend doing so, but be very, very sure that you can get comfortable before putting pen to paper.

I own a 95 1.8LX 5DR Hatch. A good all round package, excells at nothing in particular, but is good at everything you ask it to do.
Yes, the A pillar gives a degree of blind spot The front wishbone bushes were the cause of it failing it's first MOT, cos they are badly designed. It's cheaper to change the whole assembly, though I wouldn't attempt this at home.
You have to remove the OSF wheel to change the oil filter, which as a mechanical design engineer I find absolutely bizarre
I tow a caravan with it weighing some 1000kg laden, and it copes with that with no problem, and will cruise happily in fifth at 60mph, dropping into fourth on the hills.
There seems to be some confusion over which oil to use for the Zetec engine. This car has the Zeta engine as Ford called it then, although it's identical.Ignore what people say and use either semi or fully synthetic as it says in the handbook.
At 115PS the engine is lively and willing, and if you want it go it will, and it revs freely with no hint of protest.
The steering and suspension design gives an extremely good ride, although the odd pothole can upset the rear end a little. Generally, very refined, although not quite up to the 3 series BMW which I had before, and was releived of one dark rainy night a few years ago.
I average 18K a year and find this car lacks only front seat lumber adjustment, but that said they suite me fine.
It will cruise all day at 80 to 85mph and still return 34 to 36 mpg. Not spectacular, but not bad either.
If you are considering buying one don't by a high mileage rep mobile that has been to saturn and back.
There are plenty of loveingly owned low mileage, one owner private cars out there.
