1.8 LX Very good to drive, good reliability (so far) However watch out for the following:
1.Front Wishbones (bushes) £70-00+ per side fitted. Design Fault.
2. Rear tie rod bushes & links (shackles) Not a major cost @£15-00 per side, easy to diy. The car kept clonking over uneven ground even after fitment took the car to Ford in the end.
It transpires that the Mondeo has either 19mm or 21mm tie rod bushes fitted (depends on Model) I was sold 21mm however it took a road test by Ford to determine that the bushes they had sold me were 19mm BUT were packaged in the 21mm bags. A processing error. Fitted new bushes FOC as there error.
Also DO NOT be tempted to try to replace the wishebone bushes as I paid someone to do the job. Two weeks later the replacement bush pulled through. False economy. Also Ford Rapid Fit are the cheapest @ this price.
Reliability was excellent to 50 000 miles.(21 Months). Although it has never failed to complete a journey it has staggered home on two occasions and has generally had many minor problems.
Iam an owner of a 98 mondeo st24 saloon. The car drives very well but my only concern is petrol consumption which is about 20 to 22 around town. The car is quiet quick and very well layed out inside, and is a pleasure to drive. Very smooth and very quiet. 8/10
A little difficult to get used to the gearchange at first & there is a large blindspot that is the C-pillar. However the car handles excellently for a car of its size, has a relatively good ride, is reasonable on petrol & very spacious

Wishbones are a pain in the rear and need changing as often as the diesel priming pumps which go every 20000m.Im now having dashboard illumination problems which seem to be linked somehow to the rear lights.mines got 231000 miles on it so i can forgive it a few niggles.even when the alternator popped it still kept going.if anyone can help me with the dash lights problem that would be great..

Only needed tyres, exhaust box and a cam belt/ tensioner. Not very stylish but a good load carrier and keeps on going. Oh and does about 33mpg

Ive driven cavaliers for the last 12 years but was tempted by a N-Reg Mondeo Diesel that a colleague was selling. I have lived to regret this purchase due to difficult servicing compared with the cavalier. The alternator failed, this took me two evenings to replace due to it being hidden at the back of the engine! I was advised to change the cam-belt, this is fairly straight-forward on the cavalier. On the 1.8 diesel Mondeo it is an absolute nightmare! I spent a full day and then gave up in disgust! Not a car for DIY I'm now looking for another diesel cavalier!

1997(P)1.8td LX ex fleet vehicle bought as 'bike to work' (100 mile a day)in Jan 02 with 89,000 on clock with computer print out service history. Now has 131,000 on clock with only usual service and fair wear and tear replacements. Once rolling, it holds its own with the rest of the eighty mile an hour commuter pack. One good week got (an indicated) 630 miles out tank - though running on fresh air at end I think.
Advised by Ford mechanic to wait until TDCi model drops to my price bracket for replacement, and then get performance as well as comfort and economy at.
Absolutely no regrets about the purchase.

Running a 94 1.8TD saloon, now on 205k miles with no real hassles. Only ever replaced clutch cable, throttle cable and fuel shut off valve in the 100k or so that I have had it. Being an oil burner it's flat as a pan-cake but easily get 500 miles to a tank so cant moan.
P.S. once got in a taxi ('94 1.8TD) with 290k on the clock, so should have a few more miles left in it yet!

Have owned a 1998 2.0 Ghia for 9 months and found it to be comfortable and reliable but performance is not that remarkable. Cost £3,450 with 75,000 miles and full service history.Only problem I have is with rear centre seatbelt where the inertia reel won't release. Anyone know how to rectify?

I have a 95 Mondeo V6 2.5 and have had excellent service since I bought it three years ago. However I would like to know how the Immobiliser system works ( electrically) on the car. I have no information whatsoever on this unit. It is not a key PATS system it has a seperate push button control unit on the keyring marked MPT 1340. I am just curious as to how this unit operates and interfaces with the car's systems.Anyone with any ideas I'd appreciate [Log in to view email]

Had my 2.0l GLX for a year now. brought it as a cheap run about when my rover head gasket went..Was very suprised how good it was nice ride, good performance, good on fuel fairly cheep to keep on the road. Biggest exspence was a new cat and 2 wish bones for it. Only thing that shocked me was the price of spark plugs for it £20 because the zetec engine only use the platinum plug. but taking that into account i changed them & the air and oil filter + fuel filter and oil (which should be 5w-30w) for a little under £50 which is ok when i found the differance it gave me with power and fuel consumption. So without any second thought i would tell anybody to buy one...

My Mondie 2L Auto GLX is the most reliable car I've ever driven!
I've clocked up 124,000 in it(bought @Colchester Auctions 31,000 miles) and it still cruises for hrs @ 110mph on Continental Motorways!!
