I too have had the problem with locks recycling. This resulted in me not being able to lock the car hence a temptation to those little pikies who want to take it for a joy ride. If this happens to you, simply detach one of the door wiring looms (there's a connector where the door joins the body of the car). This alas cuts off the power to one door so no electric windows, but does allow the locks to be individually locked using the key. Safe for now....

To fix the problem, indeed you will need a new wiring loom as it seems the connector between door and car body corrodes. I managed to trace the problem to one wiring loom which cost £35 to replace and a bit of fiddly labour on my part but easy enough. The Haynes manual for the Ka explains how to remove the loom and replace it, job done! And all for less than the £240 +VAT quoted by Ford for a known fault with the Ka.
Cheers,

Tim

Back box, over revving and bushes

I own a T plate KA. Basic Ka. No problems until 2 years old reliability wise. Back box fell off and then closely followed by over revving problem. To start off with thought I was being a crap driver and then on the way home realized not me it is the bloody car. Scared the hell out of me, how can you have confidence in a car breaking when you can hear the engine revving when your foot is on the break?
Luckily enough a mechanic in the family, who tells me the truth not made up faults to charge me more money. He has a friend who works at the local ford dealer. The over revving is a common problem on the ka, fiesta, puma etc. So common as this extremely small dealer has ten off these parts in stock. Some electronic wire system which is really easy to fit, situated on the top left had corner of the engine. I have just had to have done by bushes, as it squeaks to buggerery when you go over a speed bumps. I have changed my basic stereo and speakers, don't let ford do them go elsewhere!!! To sum up, a lovely car for the money. Not state of the art but look at the price tag!! You pay for what you get. My car has only done 20,000 and is now what 4 nearly 5 years old. Still happy with it, had my bumpers sprayed and they still look a smart little car. I unfortunatley thought however when I bought my car, new cars no work needed for a good while, they won't break. Wrong as with all new cars. A great little car to park, great around town and fairly cheap to repair.

HOW TO FIX THE REVVING

Take your Ka to an independent garage where they emplot mechanics (rather than a Ford dealership wher they employ MacDonalds rejects).
Get them to remove the Idle Speed Control Valve (sticks off the front of the engine).
Get them to clean all the carbon out of it.
Disconnect the Keep All Memory fuse for a min of 5 minutes (resets the engine management).
Let the car then idle for 15 minutes.
Drive the car for 10 miles continusly and you are sorted.
This really needs to be done every 6 months. You can get them to connect the diagnostic to check but you may as well save yourself £30.

I had my KA cutting out so I had the idle valve replaced by my local garage. Then it revved it's heart out at every gear change and junction so they changed the throttle sensor and 1 week later it started to do it again. The local garage was totally miffed, so I emailed http://www.fixafordcar.co.uk and within a day I had the answer, and enough advice to repair it myself. All it needed was a loom on the new sensor. It's not often I praise website but I saved about £50 and only wished I'd known about the site earlier because with their help i think I could have tackled the whole job myself and saved myself £140+vat

Engine Flair (Over Revving) Problem.

Dear All,
I bought a nearly new Ka in August 2000 and noticed this over revving issue the day I collected it. Engine speed would remain constant even with the throttle pedddle lifted and the clutch in. DO NOT BE FOBBED OFF BY YOUR FORD DEALER. THIS IS A KNOWN FAULT AND FORD HAVE A 100% REMEDY ON THEIR SERVICEAID SYSTEM.

The remedy is to perform a small wiring modification to the sensor connected to the throttle pedal and to fit a spacer block between the inlet manifold and air idle valve. Any good Ford dealer should be able to type your chassis number into their system and get an instant answer on what outstanding known issues have yet to be resolved on your vehicle. Total time taken, about 20 minutes... Difference made to car....100% cure.

I too had been having problems with over revving when slowing down, and when using the clutch. By chance, I pressed down the electrical connection plugs & so far I have not had the problem back - I am now friends again with my KA 3!!

Hi there,

I too am now experiencing problems with my central locking. I cannot lock my car as it continues to recycle the locks. I have asked Ford to look at the problem for me and have been told that it is a common problem but fixable at the princely sum of £180 + VAT. This work includes replacing both wiring looms in the doors and new weather strips which caused the problem...This cost does not however include solving the problem! A very poor effort on Fords part. Can I ask what you did to repair the problem??

I like my Ka but have had a fair few problems with it including the power steering module breaking whilst under warranty. The fault was caused as a result of the servicing department not investiagting low levels in the power sterring fluid during a full service. This cost me £400 and that was with the very generous offer of 50% reduction out of the kindness of their little hearts.

Alas now, I am considering selling my Ka as there just seems to be one too many problems (the list is long) and Ford Servicing seems incapable of efficient servicing and repairs whilst still charging the earth.

I too love my Ford Ka, but she also suffers from the revving engine issue. Does anyone have a solution to this fault? Mine starts revving up as soon as I depress the clutch pedal (or pass neutral) when moving, particularly after longer drives, but always revs down once the vehicle comes to a COMPLETE stop.

Hi I own a Ka since Oct. 2000. I have had it serviced every six months those are the recommendations in Malta by the Ford dealer. My Ka has now developed a serious problem, the steering wheel column has to be changed. I am so shocked about this, my car has only 20,000km. The dealer is telling me it is wear and tear and normal. But I have owned my cars before this and never did this problem occur. Can anyone give some advice? Do you think it is a manufacturing defect?
Thanks

Overall my KA is OK, no rust as yet... but has anyone else had a problem with the steering column on their Ford Ka? It just cost me £170 to replace mine as it failed it's first MOT because the column had seized on 1 of the joints. Ford don't want to know though because the works weren't carried out at a Ford garage. The MOT garage said 2 other Ka's that week had had the same problem.

Have Collection Ka 02 from new, so far so good, if a little spongy on the brakes. My problem is the spare wheel, it was stolen by being sawn off at the bolt. I have heard of a clamp that can be fitted under side of the wheel, locking it under the body, approx £70-£90. Has anyone out there had such a thing fitted, and has it proven to be thief proof?
Many Thanks, Mazza.

Like most others I like my Ford Ka and enjoy driving it. However, I have had an ongoing problem with engine which revs out of control. The car is now 5 years old and has had this problem supposedly fixed on 3 different occasions. One Ford dealership fixed it only for the problem to occur on the journey back home. The problem usually happens at the same time of year - when it starts to get hot (this maybe just a coincidence). It really annoys me and I think Ford should pay for the problem because it's been there from the beginning. I feel reluctant spending money on a problem that isn't being rectified. Does anyone know the solution?

Quote 'I have owned my Ka from new and also had problems for over a year with sticking/racing accelerator' sounds like the Engine Management System go to a Ford garage. I had mine replaced after a year of ownership from new, it is a known fault.

The Ka is a fab car, fantasic handling, value for money, fuel economy good, spacious inside, excellent stereo and speaker system, good size boot for a supermini.

As long as it is annually serviced by a FORD dealership you shouldn't have any problems.

The Ka's engine (on older ones is the Endure E on newer ones it's the Duratec)is a reliable piece of kit as long as it's well maintained. I wouldn't even think of changing to another supermini, the others are boring, have poor handling and are not very unique looking.

Oh yeah for all those Ka fans... join the Ka Klub http://www.kaklub.co.uk

Just a follow-up note to my comments of April 22, to say that I have sorted the fuel/ignition problem and my Ka is going sweetly now. For those interested, I found a local garage with the ECU diagnostics equip. to read the computer codes(for £30) and tell me which bit was failing. They said definitely the MAF - Mass Airflow meter , which sits on top of the airfilter box. I replaced it easily myself for £92 (ouch!) but it was worth it. Ford stealership said that MAF never go wrong, much more likely the Idle Air control (not a good advert !) but they were WRONG.
MAF meter is a cute bit of equipment. It has two platinum wires that are heated, and air passing over them cools them, and lowers their electrical resistance in proportion to the mass of air entering the engine. From this, the ECu knows what volume of fuel to spit into the engine. If the MAF is faulty, the fuel gets pumped intermittently. Result! and my daughter still loves the Ka..We call it Myrtle, 'cos it looks a bit like a turtle...

ATTENTION ANYONE WITH A RUSTY KA

This problem is more common than you think; yet Fords are refusing to accept the problem is their fault. If you own or have owned a rusty KA please contact me [Log in to view email] I am collecting evidence to highlight the problem which I will be sending various media companies in the hope that Ford’s will eventually be shamed into doing something about the problem. Any information will be very gratefully received.

I own a W reg Ford KA. It's already done 70000 miles and I've owned it from new. Although the handling is great and it's a great first car there are a few niggles with it at the moment due to its age.

Rust is showing where chips have hit it around the doors, a touch up stick (£10) soon sorted this out with a protective strip (£3 each) to prevent it happening again.

It has had around 6 struts replaced even though the roads here aren't that bad. At around £60 they're not too expensive but enough to make a dent in your pay packet.

The most annoying point is when I lift my foot from the accelerator and then press the clutch when slowing the engine revs very highly. This also happens when changing gear, up more than down though. I have found that if you carefully stall the KA this problem goes away - that was around 6months ago and it has just started revving again today. It's going in tomorrow so if they find anything I'll let you know.
