Have had my W reg Ka since new. I have the same problem with the engine revving. Have had it fixed twice but it comes back after a few months. It has just started again. I will try the stalling trick tomorrow!

has anyone had the same problem as me. From new my Ka has had an engine management problem. Intermitantly, the engine continues to rev at the previous rate after the accelerator pedal is released. Occasionally the revs actually increase sometimes till the engine actually revs so fast it is almost screaming.
The fault will be absent for up to several journeys through many road conditions and gear changes then start for no apparent reason. Two separate main dealers have attempted to cure it. One replaced the clutch assuming I didn't understand clutch slip from a highly reving engine when the vehicle was stationary, in neutral and with no pressure on the accelerator pedal. The cures (whatever they were) have lasted up to about one year before reappearing.
The difficulty is no agent's mechanic I have seen identifies with the problem and, like toothache, it won't happen what I draw up at the garage. Once I drove for quite some time with the mechanic till it reappeared.
Often, in fact the only way to stop it, it to switch the engine off and restart it when it will either (mostly) go wrong almost immedialtely or be OK for several journeys.
It is dangerous and I would like to know what the fault is (other then engine management thankyou), who to get it fixed and so someone learns from this, where and for how much I can get it PERMANENTLY repaired.
Thanks John

i recently part exchanged my L reg fiesta ghia for a ka 1, although it is a little more basic than the fiesta it is still great. the steering is excellent (pas)and if you like me and cannot park, then they are ideal cause they are small and cute! i've had no problems with my as yet, but it has only been two weeks (touch wood) but i am very worried about the rust that everyone keeps going on about, so i will be checking mine in the morning that for sure! also i hope i dont have problems with it cutting out cause that was the only reason i sold my fiesta!! anyway i am really pleased with the body work and hope it just lasts!!!

The ka is one of the best looking small cars around, althogh people say its a girls car, personally i dont care, a car is a car, and ford would aim a car a one sex as they would make as much sales. some ka's are rusty, conk out round corners, leak, but not all of them and if you get a good one you'll be laughing like me!

RUST RUST - When will Ford admit that the car has a serious design fault around the door sill and door area. I'm really fed up with having to sort out the rust problem on this car - has already cost me £70.00 in repairs. My car is a v-2000 reg. It seems like every weekend Im on my hands and knees fixing the next bit of rust.

I've had a P reg Ka 2 since April 2002. Since then I've had a new engine put in, and now it's decided to cut out on me when slowing down on bends or sliproads. Can anyone help?
Our KA has had two exhaust boxes drop off - one every two years.
It cuts out going around corners and loses power - chugs- when going for a couple of miles. It is not the idle control valve! Can anyone help? Peter and G

I bought my Ka 1 new in July 2001. It has had no mechanical problems at all, and has done 25,000KM. The handling of the Ka is excellent - no more slowing down for round-abouts. The accelleration is a bit naff, but I drove a Toyota Echo (Yaris in Europe) around New Zealand, and although they have more power on paper, you have to thrash the engine to get it. Fuel efficiency is excellent. I've had no rust problems, but I live in South Australia - the driest state in the driest continent in the world, and it takes any car at least 15 years to rust here. My only small complaint is that my window winders have developed a bit too much play - something that I'm sure can be easily adjusted.

My daughter recently purchased a brand new Ford Ka 1. 2003 model with Duratec 8v engine. It was fine for 28 days then the battery light illuminated and the engine died. It was towed to our local ford dealer and the fault was diagnosed as an Engine Management System fault (the same as the previous review submitted by some one on 11 december 2002) it has been there since 19 december 2002 and we have been told that it will not be repaired before 23 January 2003, a total of 5 weeks with out a car. Would she buy another Ford? I don't think so.

I bought my KA in April 2002. It has deveoped the now famous intermitent loud ticking noise from the engine compartment at low speeds or after a long fast drive. I know two other KA owners who have the same problem. Any comments welcome. [Log in to view email]

I,ve had my Ford KA2(1998S) for about 4 weeks now after a succession of MK2 XR2,s (I have kept one)and it is absolutely brilliant very nippy and corners nearly as good as the old XR it certainly stops better. Problems so far include a bit of rust around the filler cap (although none on the sills) and the and the sunroof drips I suspect a leak somewhere nevertheless I love it

Bought a brand new Ka Collection - took ages to come... ordered on the 9th September 2002 and not delivered until yesterday (10th December 2002). Found out they have given me the 2003 model with the new Tachometer/digital dash and a seat adjuster - also the engine management system has changed and the engine layout is different. Anyway, drove it only 3 miles before noticing that the battery light was permanently on - took it back to the garage and they couldn't diagnose it as their diagnostic computers don't recognise the *new* firmware on the EMS yet. After they had a chat with Ford they managed to work out that the EMS is playing up and then it died - literally - the battery is now flat and they have told me that the loom was flooded with water which leaked into the EMS and that it probably happened during the engine steam clean the dealership gave it before handing me the keys. We now have to wait AT LEAST another 2 weeks for the replacement parts to come which coincides with Christmas so probably won't see it before the new year - What a top bit of workmanship + dealership.

If you've just bought a KA new, I'd recommend pulling up the rubber seal around the bottom of the door, and applying a layer of teflon grease to before pushing the seal back over the top. This may help to prevent the rust since the grease will be very water resistent.

I've had my panther black ka1 for just over 2 yrs now, and love almost everything about it. It handles brilliantly, has enough space, is comfortable on long journeys and is cheap to run (although it does use a bit more petrol than i expected). while a few minor things have gone wrong (back windscreen wiper for example), it always starts first time and hasnt broken down yet. and, touch wood, i havent noticed any of the rust that others seem to have a problem with. it has only 1 problem that i can see and that is a lack of power, but with the new Sport Ka Ford have solved that. cant wait to drive 1!
