Bought my daughter an S-reg Ford Ka2 a few months back. I test-drove it on a variety of roads, at various speeds, and under some normal and not-so-normal conditions. All seemed fine. The car has behaved itself for most of the last few months. But .....

My daughter says that occasionally when she's steering to the right, that although the steering wheel turns clockwise, the car refuses to turn, and continues to go in a straight line!

This has resulted in one wrecked tyre/wheel/trim.

The AA have looked at it - "no problems, miss".

The supplying garage have looked at it - "can't see anything wrong, everything's as it should be".

My daughter is convinced they're wrong.

Anyone experienced this? Or got any comments, ideas, observations.

Hi, I'm back again adding to my 2 previous comments on 'over-revving'. I booked my Ka into my local Ford garage to have the wiring modification done. They didn't much like the fact that, with the aid of these pages, I'd done my homework on the problem. They would have preferred billing me for 'diagnosis'. When I collected the Ka I asked, reasonably I thought, if they had road tested the Ka after completing the mod? The reply, "No, WE did not diagnose the fault. WE did exactly what you instructed us to do." Nice attitude Ford! Personally I think the over-revving problem is so potentionally dangerous Ford Motor Company should have issued a recall on the affected Ka's, but heck I'm only a customer what would I know! Ian

Further to my contribution yesterday concerning my Ka over-revving. I am reliably informed that FORD TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 95/2000 Dated 20/12/2001 covers this problem. Parts required FINIS CODE 1150138. LABOUR 0.6HRS if you have your FORD garage fix it for you (Recommended). Ka builds concerned are those born between August 1995 and June 2000. Your supplier will check the build date of your Ka for you. Happy Ka-ing, Ian

Thanks to all who recorded info about over-revving. The first couple of times I thought my big feet had clipped the gas pedal ... then it got scary! I'm booking my "W" Ka Collection in to have this problem fixed ??? Yup, I've copied and pasted all of your advice on the matter to take with me to my Ford garage. I like the Ka, not love it mind, it's very nippy, a bit road noisy, and tends to over steer, but it's OK for local driving.

We on our third KA now. First one was a base V reg. Next came the Luxury W reg. Loved them both. Now, to top the lot, a new SPORTKA (SE model) caps off the (still after all these years) cool styling with a fantastic 1.6 engine. Compares favourably with the Puma we used to have. Fantastic fun, cheap to run and insure, great value for money!

I have had four Ka's in the four years of driving and most were changed a t about 9 months. My current KA has ran fine until now it is 23mths old and the power steering pump has gone. The problem has been present for about 6 months with the pump making a hissing sound yet for every service it goes to and I ask the ford dealer to check the problem they insist it is normal for power steering to make that noise. I informed them that the last 3 never made that noise but they did not care. Now is it not driveable and to make things worse they cannot supply a car for me to drive the 60 to and from work. Also it has had suspension work. The cutting out on my KA was due to a crack in the speed control sensor, this did not give accurate data to the ECU thus dropping the engine revvs. After this was fixed it still cuts out when driving slowly and using max lock on the steering. It is if all the power is being zapped from the engine. This is a 2001 model year KA the previous 3 had no problems.

I have had my KA for 3 years now. Initially thought it was fantastic - until the first road chip. I have never had a car with fragile paint like this one, and since then the chips have increased. Unless Ford can convince the Highways not to use stone chippings for road surfacing this won't change. A year ago, the day after the second service at the Ford garage from which I had bought the KA, the engine over revved on changing gear, I went back to the Ford garage, but when the mechanic got in the car it did not overrev and the mechanic acted like the problem was imaginary. A year later it was over-revving again - very very loudly - the next day I took it to the local Ford Garage, again it did not repeat the problem, and they reported they could find nothing wrong with it. As a Ford garage you would think they would have known about this fault - having just visited the fixafordcar.co.uk site this is one of the top ten faults caused by the trottle position sensor. If your KA was built between 08.1995 and 21.06.2000 this site says it will also require a modified connector. Tomorrow I'll be talking to local garage again! Doesn't leave me with a lot of faith in Ford dealerships. MC

Poor build quality and behind dash electrics. Trim around seats likely to fall off, rattles can develop inside doors under body. Hatchback lock wear will develop quickly if key used to lift hatch door open. Not a bad car, comfortable for local and trips upto the 250 mile mark. Drivers door window wiper position so that knee rest uncomfortably against it.

Am seriously thinking of buying a 'used' Ka from my Ford dealer, i.e. ex-demo model. But having read some reviews I don't like the sound of all those ones that cut out - that is the reason I'm getting rid of my Fiat Uno. Is the Ka the right buy? I don't want a big car and thought it would be perfect. Am I only hearing the horror stories? And surely the Ka has to be better than the Uno at getting up hills?! Any advice welcomed!

Ive had my KA since April 2002. In January I commented on this site about an intermittent ticking sound from the engine. learnt to live with this until this summer when the KA ticking turned into a mild intermittent mild knocking from the alternator fan belt area. This is only noticable on tickover or when driving slowly. It damps down considerably when the AC is operational. It goes in for examination on 23rd June. Possible fault is a defective self adjusting fanbelt mechanism creating the knock. Hopefully!! Anybody else had a similar 'knock' and if so what was it?
I'll update later. Apart from that, a great little car all round. I'm 6' 1" and certainly no 'girly' [Log in to view email]

I loved this car when I first got it but now I hate it because of the rust! When I bought a three year old car I did not expect to have this problem. I wont be buying another ford. Buy peugeot or volkswagon as they dip the whole body in an anti-corrosive substance before painting it.

I have owned my Ka from new and also had problems for over a year with sticking/racing accelerator which has become getting far worse recently (not being cured by turning off the engine). The car is going into the garage for the third time to try and get it sorted out. The brakes are definately too soft and the older engine underpowered. I have driven numerous other Ford models and think they can produce 'relatively' decent cars, but I dont think I would want to own another - looks like I got one of the [numerous]lemons.
