regarding simons leaky sun roof on your 405. I would personally check the water is coming in through your sunroof and not through the base of the ariel. This is the case with with 1995 GTX which then fills up the interior light.

Mine had a small lake under the back seat when I bought it. This is most likely to happen if you have water leaking into the boot, as I did. The seal that goes round the filler cap is one suspect, but mine had a slight prang at the back O/S corner and the seam between the rear quarter and back panel had sprung, allowing *loads* of water in! It's easily fixed with a bit of silicone - the bad news is that you'll probably have to take the rear bumper off to do it properly. I bodged it from the inside, which improved matters dramatically but didn't cure the problem completely.

BTW on mine the rear lamp clusters were also awash. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of each one - sorted!

Have owned my 405 1.9 TD estate for 2 1/2 years and covered nearly 30k(it's now done 112k). In that time it has been fantastic, performance/economy are excellent comfort is second to none and as for reliability I have been fortunate that the only problem I have had is the heater is starting to get a bit lame, so for a car that originally cost me £2k it has been amazing value and I see no reason why it shouldn't continue to be

I bought my 1.9 sri 18 months ago for £650, it's done 26K in that time (out of 145) and it's been worth every penny. Even though it doesn't necessarily feel that well built its never (ever) broken down and the handling is sublime.

Also have to commend the comfort and space of the interior, and the huge boot. The ski hatch is useful.

The main problem is oil burning which is apparently common on these engines - I have to top it up virtually every refuel (big tank though)! The cause was bore wear so I've learned to live with it...

(It's also shockingly awkward to work on at times)

The ceiling is a little low with the sliding sunroof, and for such a fine handling car I'd like a few more bhp. Maybe an Mi16 next...

I bought a H reg. 405 1.9 gld three years ago, most economical and reliable car i ever had (including a volvo), starts first time and goes like a bomb when warmed up. Just started to lose a little coolant and bit of cream in oil filler cap, could be head gasket, if so i'll get it fixed, not spent a penny on it so far. Excellent!

Hi,

I own a Peugeot 405 GR (1993) and it
handles quite well, I must say.

There is one problem though :
The engine is leaking coolant.
It seems to emerge from in between
the engine-block and the oil-pan.
However, the source must be somewhere
else because I don't think
coolant-ducts run through the oil-pan.
Anything else seems dry, though.

Anyone has a gues??

As I said, the car handles fine and I
don't want another.

I bought a 405 GRD new in '91 and used it as a taxi for 9 years. Although it was a problem car from day 1, it never actually let me down and 'conked' out on the road. I had it serviced at the required intervals and sold it 2 years ago with 330,000 miles with the original engine (1 head gasket replacement), original gearbox and the original exhaust system. The local dealers, Jordans only failed to supply a next day parts delivery once, and that was because the Peugeot warhouse was out of stock. The 405 is a dream car to drive, so much so that I'm due to take delivery of a '95 2.0i GTX on Saturday. Any one thinking of a 405, buy a late model, the build quality is so much better than the one I had.

Ive just bought a 405 gtx td for £300. Took it for the MOT and it failed on few things like brakes and something at the rear being mis-aligned. I have absolutley no idea what any of the MOT means as i know nothing about cars. Fortunately my mate is a mechanic and he is going to sort all the work out for me for free. But he says 405's are amazing and very reliable

I love my 405, it's pretty slow accelerating really, but it is sooo smooth, handles beutifully and is economical (when i'm taking it easy) I've had about 120mph, on a track, out of it and thats not bad for what it is. I've been having a problem with loosing coolant, but that's a leaking radiator which will soon be fixed. I would like some more oomph allround as the acceleration is fairly poor (0-60 in 12.7 secs!!) and at high speeds it takes a while to pick up shoulod i want to overtake. But dispite these short comings i love it. It's just so comfortable and high specced for a low price!

My poor old peu just got sqashed by a lorry. The best car I have had to date. 169000 on the clock and still purred like a kitten. It has cost me a few grand over the last 4 years but the diesal engine never gave me an ounce of trouble......I want her back!

I've owned my 1991 GRDTurbo Diesel Estate now for 7 years next week.
During that time I have enjoyed every minute of it.
I do my own maintenence and if anything needs replacing I dont bugger about anymore I replace it, I service it every 6000miles without fell, I'm not out there every weekend cleaning it, infact its full of crap inside but I've been looking around and I havent found a better car to match up to it yet, I'm on a mission to see how many miles the engine will do before it dies completely on me I'm on 143,000 at the moment so I think I should get another 100k out of her she does 600 miles between fill ups the tail tip of the exhaust was hanging on this time last year so I tore it off cleaned the silencer box end up and the end bit and then welded back on saved myself 60 quid there and its still good as new one year on I think every one should have one the world would be a better place!

I bought a 92 1.8 gri without checking under the bonnet. It purred like a kitten and went like hell. Faster than my previously owned company 1999 astra 1.7 td 68hp (softturbo yessir) anyway. Only the astra did about oh I don't know 160000 miles pedal to the metal just getting increasingly more dirty. It would just go and go. It could do topspeed all day if I needed it to. Back to the 405. It broke down in two days. First I had some temperature problems. Then the clutch went. I fixed all of that. Payed to anyway. On the first outing both headlights went at the same time. I stopped to check it out, so to get new lights I have to pull away again to go to a gas station. As I pull away first gear seems really hard to engage, pedal to the medal, second gear, loud shreaking noise and mechanical distress. I fiddle it in anyway wich resultes in lots of sawdust instead of a gearbox. I come to a grinding stop, light a smoke and get f...ing hit in the rear by somebody who didn't see my bright white 405. So now the boot is trying to make friends with the roof. I guess it wasn't to be.
