Currently own a 1995 E200 with only 45k miles on the clock - have had it for for a year and its sheer class, fantastic build quality and effortless cruising ability never cease to amaze me.
Only draw back is proper maintenance costs, even at a specialist. Not one to be owned on a budget! Also the 2 litre is a little underpowered for the bulk it needs to shift - but for stress free wafting there's little better.
I bought a 220 coupe, too much money really for a car that the 4 door variant is half the price and almost as good. Good styling, reliability is fine, but insurers are wary of a big coupe.
300e 1989 106k. It just keeps on going and going. I had an audi 100 for 10 years and thought that was a solid car but the merc is just as economical, vastly superior performance and built like a tank. Everything has that "last forever" feel about it . The styling is very conservative with no excess flashy chrome and the 124 range dosen't suffer from, what one magazine refered to as " a fast changing ownership profile" (refering to the 5 series BMW). Maintainance costs, if one does the work oneself, is cheaper than those for my wifes Ford Ka! Would I have another one? I probably won't need to.....I think this one will still be going strong when I'm long gone.

bouncing suspension in any older car is remedied easily by a change of shockers . Springs maybe need a test to see if they are weak.

Just bought a 1 owner 1988 300TE which has only ever been to an offical Mercedes dealer for servicing. The mileage? 245000 miles and still drives beautifully! My only negative comment would be the suspension which is very bouncy when the car is fully loaded. Ordinarily I wouldn't have bought the car but the guy who owned it before showed me all the stamps in the two service books and lots of receipts too. Anytime anything ever went wrong he always sent it to Mercedes - even for tyres!!

Had my '95' E200T for just 2 weeks now. She has 100,000 miles under her belt and just run in. The twin cam 16 valve 2.0L engine is smooth and economical. Probably best car Iv'e owned. 7 seats S/R, E/W etc, full Walnut trim and Metalic blue(Nautic). Ive found a good specialist who is into T's. Last of the over engineered Mercs. Buy one John Formby in UK.

I've run a 230TE for the last three years. Bought it to replace a diesel Range Rover - great drive but bits always falling off. The Merc has been terrific. 4/500 miles a day - often towing - and no back pain. 30 mpg running solo. Oodles of space. Had to replace half shaft, rear suspension spheres and rad, but it is just shy of 200K. Used the local agent once, now use the man who services the region's taxis. Much better service all round without the coffee machines and glass tables! A cracking family sized motor car.

1994 E280. Purchased 1 year ago with 70,000Km on the clock. Without doubt - best car I've ever owned. Its good looking, extremely well built, a winner on the open road and very comfortable. I've got a young family and this car makes me feel they're being moved around in the best safety I can provide.

I have a '91 300TE-24v Sportline. It was the top of the range back then. I bought it just under 18 months ago and its been fantastic. 153,000 on the clock now and still looks great, starts first time and runs like a steam train. Bit juicy at the pumps but with a 240bhp 3 litre engine what do you expect. Feels like it will last for ever.

I have a 230E 124 (88) - its my 6th merc and may second 124 (my first was a 86 with 168K)
I agree with all the former comments - the 124 is a great car - space/grace and economy. The build quality is superb and will last forever. I use a local specialist (Merc- Care) in Leeds West Yorks which cuts costs considerably on main dealer - and they only use Mobil oil. I think my next car will be a 200 or 230TE !

E280 Auto (4 door)1994 model. Bought as a 40th birthday present to myself a year ago. Best car I've ever owned. Comfortable, quiet, quick, sublime motorway cruiser. I feel that my family and I are supremely safe when we are in the vehicle. I've covered 16,000 miles at an average of 25.4 mpg. Could do without having to wait for parts from Germany when things go wrong and could do without the high prices charged by both specialist and franchise dealers. I must add though that Monarch Mercedes in Tamworth have looked after me very well. In short, I love my E280.

The W124 is one of the last quality-built Mercedes-Benz; before the company went into mass-market production. As such, it will last you ... as long as you want it to!
I recently bought a 1989 300E - our fourt E-Class - and I challenge anyone to find a more comfortable, reliable, powerful and elegant 13 year-old car.

W124 230TE Owned for a year and have added 10,000 miles to the 89,000 it had when I bought it. Described as 'bulletproof' by my local German car specialist. I overpaid by quite a bit but it was worth it. Previous owner neglect has presented a few electrical problems and some bodywork to be touched up, but part are cheap because Daimler made millions of this model. The estates are very popular where I live and no wonder. Treat yourself.

I was lucky enough to buy a 1986 300E last year. It was an ex dealer demonstrator and was fitted with every option. It had 180,000 miles on when I bought it but a pile of history and bills as thick as your arm! This was easily the best car I've ever owned, built like a tank and in mint condition despite the milage. To anyone considering a W124, don't be put off by miles even over £150K, as long as there's a FSH. Conservative styling means W124s age very gracefully too. 100% reliable and cheap to service beacuse nothing ever goes wrong! And I felt safe as houses in it too. So if this car is so fabulous, how come I'm speaking about it in the past tense? Well soon after buying it things changed and I couldn't afford to run a bicycle, nevermind a 300E! But now I'm back and can't wait to get my hands on my next W124!
