i think my 02 model looks and handles the dogs bollox but even with the powervalve opened up i still can't get more than 65mph out of the thing.it's as flat as a witches tit over 7000rpm.have been told the newer models are restricted to death by the standard exhaust system so have ordered a full dep pipe and silencer to try and sort it.
nice bike when race tuned very fast as standard model. full DEP race pipe wanted email to [Log in to view email] £100 awaiting

Hi,
I own a 1999 DT125R and i'm very pleased with it. However, the CDI Unit on my bike does not control the YPVS Servo correctly. On initial throttle application the Exhaust valve turns the wrong way before going on to open fully. By substituting a known good CDI Unit from another bike of unknown year the YPVS system operates correctly. Does anyone know if it is possible to modify the wiring on the original CDI to achieve the same result?

Right then, the good news is that anyone with a pre-1999 Yamaha DT125R can easily release another 10bhp+. All that is required is an adjustment to the powervalve on the left-hand side of the cylinder. By taking off the exhaust and looking up the port with your missus' vanity mirror it is easy to "tune" the engine. Obviously, a bigger exhaust port means more top end and a smaller exhaust port means more bottom end - if you have a servomotor fitted you get the best of both worlds when set up right (get a mate to turn the ignition on and off while you check and adjust the valve). A straight through tailpipe such as a Dep is ideal, but really I see no benefit in replacing the whole system on these models (other than for pose value). No kidding, 95mph verified (because the speedo only goes up to 80mph) on my 1989 model (getting your riding position right - to avoid serious speed wobble - takes practice) with servomotor imported unofficially.
From 1999 to 2003 (which will probably the last year of the DT125R) those nice people at Yamaha have altered the exhaust port and powervalve to make de-restriction somewhat more difficult. Furthermore, I have found that the factory powervalve settings seem to vary - a friends 2002 model was set up perfect (checked by looking up the port, as before) but my 2002 model needed attention to keep pace. This can have a dramatic effect on the performance, and accounts for the, mine does being quoted in the range of 60-75mph get it right and 75mph with the wind in your favour is possible (just, but realistically 70mph). The expansion chamber has also been given some attention internally and, short of taking a grinder to it, cannot easily be sorted. However, a full Dep system now comes into its own, releasing another couple of bhp (that's still a 15%+ increase in power!) enough to ensure 75mph, with just over 80mph possible on a good day. As far as I can ascertain, stories of CDi restriction are just that stories.
As for reliability no problems, i.e. 15,000 miles of seriously hard riding and never required a rebuild. Be sensible service the thing and it will service you.
