Hi all,
Rick; You should be able to get a new main jet from just about any bike shop/garage but I think it’s only any good if you’ve sorted your power valve out (I know you’ve done this) & either got a DEP exhaust or some other after market exhaust or “fixed” the original one, this is what I would recommend because you get a very good performance boost & it only takes about 30 mins to do & the exhaust looks original so no one knows you’ve derestricted the bike (until you scream past them at 70mph!) it’s also cheaper & I like cheap :). Make sure the main jet you get is for an MIKUNI carb. The main jet just looks like a small brass bolt, about 10mm long by 5mm with a hole down the middle. If you change the air filter to one of the performance ones on the market you would probably have to fiddle with the carb jetting again to balance out the larger air flow but to be honest I don’t really know, I’ve stuck with the original air filter and the bike is running nice and smooth, overtaking has become fun and very easy now instead of slow and terrifying when you realise you don’t have the power to complete the manoeuvre!
BTW if anyone wants to correct me on any of the things I’ve said feel free :)

In response to Tink's posting,
Can I get a larger main jet from just any good motorcyle shop, if not could you supply me with details of where you got yours?
Also is changing the filter from standard to something like a K&N worth while?
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers mate.

Just a quick addition to the previous post from Rick, I would also change the main jet in the carb (nice and cheap, only cost £3!) My DT is an 02 import and came with a #240 main jet and I changed it to a #260 this makes full throttle action MUCH better because the engine is not being starved of petrol its also safer because the engine runs cooler, I think the UK spec DT's have a #210 main jet so I would at least go up to a #240 & try a #260 if you have a DEP exhaust or have removed the restrictor & set the power valve up correctly because your engine may over heat wothout the extra fuel now that it can "breath out" better . If you struggle around mid throttle raise the jet needle a notch or two but mine didnt need that.
On my machine I ground out the exhaust restrictor, turned the power valve % replaced the main jet with a #260 & it now accelerates like stink and the revs are very easy to redline, bfore it stopped at about 8500. Ive had it up to 80mph it may have gone faster but I dont think the DT was built for that kind of speed. Not a bad improvment for £3. If anyone wants any help mail me, I'll TRY & help out.

Hi,

I have an 02 DTR 125 and have just added a full DEP exhaust to try and release some more power. While the bike now sounds great, it does not seem to be any quicker and tops out at 60 mph. Someone please tell me what I need to do to get more from this bike.

Thanks

thats what happens when you buy a second hand, low cc, 2 stroke bike. It could have been crashed, or the rings went & detroyed the engine. Both my dt's I had from new. And never a problem with the engine.

I have owned a dt125r 2002 4 about 3 months now and i must say that it is the best bike i have ridden in ages. Mine does about 95 mph i have had it fully race tuned with carbon fibre reeds full dep system and so on, the power you get from this is amazing. The bike will wheelie when it hits the power for the first couple of geaors it really is great.

Hey people.
I have had a DT125R for 2 years to date. Have done about 17,000 miles on 2 different DT's(badly crashed the 2001 one wiht 11k miles on it).
If you want the DT to perform you need to first break it in properly, then cut open the exhaust and remove the disk in the expansion chamber & re-weld it back together.
I went through 3 exhausts(all on warrenty) cause the disk kept breaking off & ratteling, before the shop decided to remove the disk altogether. On the post accident DT (2002 one) I asked the shop to do the same job, only cost 25 euro(dublin biker here). It loses power if only used for short journeys, you should stretch its legs every few weeks.
I get 80mph on a good day, but it always gives me 75 minimun. I dont know how those lads are getting 95mph cause the standard gears max at 80 which is 10,250 revs(reds at 10,500). And speed wobble can be a problem if your not used to it. I wouldnt like to do 95(if it is possible) the bike just cant handle more than 80, iv went into the red on motorways(i presume its about 85) but the bike is too jittery at that speed. Aerodynamics come into play, and the bike doesnt have any.
As for pillions, iv done about 4,000 miles with a pillion & Iv never had any problems (except a numb arse, and a sore lower back seems to be worse with a pillion). It will still do 80 with a pillion. But not at first, if you go on a journey, after about 10/15 miles of open road its performance improves (same when without a pillion).
Another advantage of the DT is for some reason Speed Cameras cant detect it!!! I intentionally tried to get caught on one and the guy in a car beside me got flashed, but not me. Havent a clue why. And a Garda(irish police) tried to get me with a radar gun, i was doin 80 in a 50 zone, he couldnt detect me, and i could see he was really trying!!!
Hope this helps some people, e-mail me if you have any comments, questions or just want to chat to a fellow DTer @ [Log in to view email]
One last thing, im havin real problems getin the thing to wheelie, but i think thats me more than the bike.

The only suggestion is LOCK IT UP mine got stolen in 1 minute from it being put outside work and i found the thing but by the time the police got there one and a half hours LATER (GOOD WORK OFFICERS) the bike was gone again never to be seen. Keep your eyes on the thing it only take a white J reg transit van to come and take it to Canterbury Estate in Bradford where the thiefing little BA****DS thrash it to hell and hide it never to be seen again. So if there is anyone with any info that can help my E-MAIL is [Log in to view email] come on you DT lovers its time we all got stuck together and stoped these little scum of the earth getting away with it.

I've had my dt (good choise) for just over two months. The only thing that concerns me is that the lights are dim on tick over, is this normal? P.S. I'd forgotten what it was like to ride(18 years ago). Laods of fun! The only thing is I'm hooked and want a bigger bike, can anyone tell me a good way of telling my wife.

I got my DT at 17 and quickly did my test so i could de restrict it. its a good litle trail bike but all you peps who say it rocks need to ride a real bike. got a wr426f now, it really shows you how poor the dt engine is. my dad now rides my dt, and finds that the dep pipes do give you more power but the standard pipe brings the powerband down a bit and makes it nicer to ride. if the power dies at around 6-7Krpm then you will have to check the powervalve. take the expansion chamber off and look up the port, turn the ignition on and the valve should close then open, when open it should fit flush with the top of the port. in the original epansion chamber there might be a cone right at the end, you can easily grind the welds off and remove this. dont know what exact hp they produce but my WR was dynoed at 38bhp and does 0-60 in 3.5sec and i have out draged cbr600s at the lights. i could give better de-restricting info if anyone is stuck. good luck and go do your tests!
