I recently bought a 2.8 injection.
it did not live up to the
expectations that I had of the v6,
maybe that's because I have had
little hot hatches like the gt
turbo, golf gti, xr2 and a mark 2
rs 2000. Everyone I spoke to said
that the 3 litre engine was better
for torque and tuning. So after
only 2 months of buying the capri
I was on a lookout for a 3 litre
ghia automatic. preferably a black
one,and I found it, right price
with re-conditioned engine to a
3.1. With this I know where my
money went, does not look as good
as the 2.8 but has essentially the
same , e.g.power steering, good
brakes and a much better growl
under the bonnet. Whilst driving
the car back home on the motorway
I could really feel the power, I
could not stop smiling. So what
if it guzzles petrol, it's the fun
fdactor that counts, and no more
bother with gear changing.
DEFINATELY RECOMMEND ONE. DON'T
GET ME WRONG THE 2.8 IS A BEAST OF
A CAR BUT THE 3 LITRE HAS TO BE
KING OF [Log in to view email]

How on earth has this car got such a bad image. I am now 22 and am on my second 2.8i the first one D707MVP I aquired when only 19! My dad has a 280 so is probably to blame for my obssesion! I have fitted stage 2 cylinder heads, a K&N air filter, lowered it by 1", and fitted a set of genuine 15" brooky alloys. I am also in the middle of rebuilding a set of princess 4-pot calipers to be fitted shortly! For performance and fun per pound you just cant beat a 2.8i. After a couple of arse out roundabouts youll never want a FWD hot hatch again

I own a Capri 280 Brooklands. After owning a succession of other Capri's, I now drive a Rover day to day, and the Brooky is waiting in the garage for summer. I firmly believe you cannot spend 5 grand and get a more desirable, classic & powerfull sports coupe.

Nowadays there are hardly any of them about, so when we go out in the Brooky, people tend to turn their heads to follow. As standard it has a full leather recaro interior, 15 inch alloys, 2.8 V6 engine, Bilstein suspension & vented discs, as well as power steering, sunroof etc etc. No more the boy racer, now a complete classic. There are less than 500 left in existence, so GO BUY ONE NOW!!

Capris are probably still seen as a boy racer car in some areas, but many of them are now owned by responsible people who prfer to distance themselves from this. They are relatively cheap to purchase and spares, particually second hand, are in adundance, cheap and quite easy to source. The only real down side is the fuel consumption. But what the hell, you only live once.

Considering it was essentially a Cortina with a Coupe body, the Capri did well to forge a name for itself as a perfomance car.
Later versions had some pretty wild engines, although still held in the air with leaf spring rear suspension, making the handling somewhat limited.
The Capri went from being a fashionable sports car, through to being the icon of Essex man during the eighties. Nice original examples are now shedding that image, and building a following of enthusiasts.
Parts plentiful and cheap.

Look all of you guys are trying to compare an car made in the mid 70's with mid 70's tec to a car made in the late 80's. Take if for what it is an old car. I mean the 2.8i used to put out 160ish bhp, the 3.0 would put out 170bhp. But look at the tuning possability! I have seen Capris running the 4x4 drive and engine from a Scorpio (3995cc V6 16v) doing the 0-60 in under 5.5 seconds. The Tickford Capri (2.8 Turbo 220bhp) will still rip the arse out of most modernday sports cars. So it an extra 800cc, but its also 200lbs lighter because it don't have electric windows, aircon and all the other bits. 0-6 in 6.5 seconds.

So please people just take it for what it is a classic that is great for a bit of arse out action!

I bought a brand new four cylinder 2.8i HLS Capri in 1975. The performance was sensational for the mid seventies. Although the engine was only 200 cc short of the top of the range 3-litre, it returned an impressive 52 mpg. Even when i booted the car it would return about 30 mpg. The six speed gearbox was a delight to use, a first for 1975. Brakes were not really up to the performance of the car being non servo assisted drums all round. By contrast the handling was like it was on rails, despite being rear wheel drive the rear never broke away. Unfortunately i could only afford the HLS model, just could'nt stretch to the Ghia version. The only fault i could find was that the single carburettor kept playing up, however to be fair i never had any problems with the injection unit. For a four cylinder car it packed quite a punch (0-60 in around 9 secs and a top speed of about 115 mph). My advice to people thinking of buying a Capri is to keep the front trunnions lubricated with gear oil every 3,000 miles to avoid future problems. I sold the Capri in the mid 80's, but sometimes i dream of owning that car again.

Judging by the road tests at the time (What Car), which used official timing equipment the 2.8i Capri will not leave the Astra GTE 16 VALVE. They give a top speed for the Capri at 128 mph, the Astra's top speed was 137 mph. The Capri's 0-60 time was 7.8 secsonds, The Astra's was quicker at 6.7 seconds. But prehaps the driver of the Capri was having an off day at the time. It is worth pointing out that these figures are for the 16 valve car not the 8 valve Astra. Don't feel too bad, at least the Capri will comfortably out accelerate the 8 valve Astra (despite needing an 800cc advantage to do so).

Tough as old boots these cars, I've been driving them for 10 years now. The 2.8i will leave a GTE Astra standing when it's driven properly, and to the people reporting 101mph and 95mph - sounds like you need to fix it... I've had 3 2.8s and the slowest of them topped out at 128, the fastest hit 135. Of course not much use on roads today, but if you're going for the 2.8 try to find the older 4 speed model - it's much quicker lower down... Wish I hadn't sold mine.

A front wheel drive Astra 2.0GTE 16v will leave your rear wheel drive 2.8i Capri in the weeds. If you think your Capri has a chance, try out accelerating one. The GTE driver will see merely a fading blip in his mirror!

I once had a Capri 2.8i and it was the finest sports coupe i ever owned. Handling was a little wayward at times but it drove lovely. I am suprised that one gentlemans Capri 2.8i could do 101 mph, mine could never top 95 mph, but prehaps it was because his was tuned. Although to be fair the rather low top speed never bothered me personly, i would certainly have another, maybe some lucky day.

Happy racer needs to learn how to spell let alone drive a car. By the way my old 2.8i Capri was rolling road tuned. I can't help feeling if happy racer wants a fast car, buy an Allegro 1750SS, as they will top 130mph NO SWEAT.
