We love our TD4 Sport Premuim

Know lots of people unhappy with Rocar as prev post. We travel a long way to Guy Salmon at wakefield and they are fantastic and 110% customer focused.

Anyone running a TD4 must disconnect the EGR valve to see sensible and stall free running and massive power and MPG increases.

It is over used to 'lie' about the cars emission performance, giving appauling MPG, low power, no torque and hesitant at junctions.

Right, before i go on may i make a point. If you now anything about motors you obviously wouldnt buy a 1.8i Petrol Freelander for racing, long distance journeys or towing caravans....Would you????

This model was designed and built for the WAGs amongst us not the serious Off Roaders.

It looks great but should be driven like a Vauxhall Tigra - By a gentle (probably female) driver!!

You have read all the reveiws but they look great and if you want one then my advice is buy one! We have had our second Petrol 1.8 for 10 months now after owning the first for 3 years. We took Warranty (5 star ) at 15.00 a month, put 2 products called " K-Seal" and " waterwetter" in the water system, and my wife drove it for about 40 miles a week over the 4 years.

Not even a spare tyre needed. - If you want a serious off roader buy something else, if you buy the Petrol Freelander and drive it hard expect the thing to blow up.
There is a fault with the River K Series engine, but if you dont aknowledge that then whos to blame??

finally got rid of my td4 freelander at a considerable sum back to dealer. my advice to anyone is NEVER EVER BUY A LAND ROVER. THE DEALERS ARE IGNORANT AND UNHELPFULL AND ARE NOT CAPABLE OF REPAIRING VEHICLES TO A RESONABLE STANDARD. THE VEHICLES ARE UNRELIABLE AND NOT WORTH THE HASSLE!!!!

i bought my 1.8 serengetti from rocar moores huddersfield new in 03. From driving away the interior lights did'nt work back door/window leaked after 8 months it needed new leather drivers seat (leather in the loosest sense) it started to come apart. Over the next couple of years various other bits fell off or just stopped working, then 4 days before my warranty ran out the usual HEAD GASKET at 28000 miles and was told by a mechanic at the dealers "i'd not done bad to get that sort of mileage out of one of these" thanks.
i was told i'd have to pay because they'd started the warranty the week before i got the car but relented after kicking up a fuss, then it went again 9 months later, they said nothing wrong but an aa inspection proved otherwise.
I sold the thing back to rocar moores at a considerable loss but by god am i glad to be rid of that heap of s#'% is it any wonder rovers where it is now if thats what we are turning out in the midlands.

I own 2005 Td4, overall the car is great, it handles well is easy and fun to drive and I feel comfortable and safe behind the wheel, my one niggle is that after 18,500 miles I have had to have the brake pads and the discs replaced at a cost of £260 - this was after haggling over the price and getting over £70 off the cost of the bill, the pads I accept but the thought of replacing discs this often at this price makes me wonder, I realise they will be harder on discs due to the weight but feel this is excessive, my partners fully loaded hi ace with 38,000 miles still has original discs.

freelander 1.8s 2001
My nick name for this car is Freelander from hell. It looked so cute when we got it in its shiny black shell but dont be fooled keep clear from these horrible cars

We have owned this car for the last 15 months below you will see what is apparantly common with this sort of car but below is a true account of what our model has gone through

problem 1) fuel very thirsty
problem 2) mounting gone on back suspension common apparantley cost of repair £400.00
problem 3) clutch gone twice over the last 15 months
problem 4) water leaks through back window and door
problem 5) alternatator had to be changed
problem 6) big end shells gone
problem 7) oil pump gone
problem 8) 2 electric windows gone
problem 9) gearbox painfull
problem 10) even though its a petrol model it takes diesel brake pads wich causes horrible squeaks as brake dust builds up and gets trapped

if you are rearlly seriuous about buying one of these painfull boxes of broken nuts and bolts please get it checked out by a pro.

now it sits in the drive waiting for me to get it repaired :(

Well after slating it in an earlier review ,my head gasket went AGAIN before I could get rid of it.

Please please ,anyone considering buying one take note-

DO NOT BE SEDUCED BY THIS CARS LOOKS ,IT IS THE WORST CAR EVER BUILT.

It will cost you tons of cash ,and I guarantee you within weeks of buying one you will regret it big time. I am now deciding whether to just scrap mine ,defo buying German from now on. At least they know how to build cars properly!

Luckily I had heard the horror stories about the petrol Freelander and in late 2002 bought a Y (2001) 3 door hardtop TD4 GS officailly chipped ex-demo from its second owner with 30k miles for £13,000. The Powerlink chip is worth having as it increases the BHP and at the same time seems to improve the fuel economy. I would recommend anybody who's warranty is about to expire to get the car in for a service at their local main agent about a month before as I did just that and got a new power stearing pump, new steering rack and new IRD paid for by Land Rover. Since then the only problem I have had was a sudden loss of power and lots of smoke, which I thought was the turbo but which it turned out was caused by a faulty Air Mass Modulator at a cost of about £180 for the diagnostics and about £30 for the part! The car also seems to eat tyres but I think that is down to my aggresive driving round corners as I have had the tracking checked several times and that seems fine. The car has now done £70k and I have noticed a clonking from the rear when I pull forwards which I thought was the brakes or transmission but I have just read the latest Freelander Club magazine and someone has described a similar propblem and found it to be a defective rubber mounting on the differential. I am hoping that mine will be the same as that doesn't sound too expensive!? I am looking to replace the car this year and went to the new Freelander launch recently but I thought the car was expensive for what it is and I would rather go for a used Disco 3 if the budget will stretch to it. I am also toying with a Volvo XC90 as these are starting to come down in price, are very well equipped and have not been put together by a hairy a*sed brummie and so dont seem to have any major known faults. I have enjoyed my Freelander overall and would summarise as follows; + off road capabilites, reliable BMW diesel engine, drive with rear window down in the summer, fuel economy, average running costs if you steer clear of the main dealer after the warranty expires - road noise and trim rattles, poor boot space, heater is useless, tendency to steam up in the winter, niggling faults that you should not get from a reputable vehicle maker that invented the off roader.

Maybe I am a lucky one. Our 1.8se went for an mot in 2005, and needed a new exhust bracket, fine not expensive. Two weeks later exhaust blew dealer replaced foc. This year head gasket went, car was 4years old with fsh under 60000.Local dealer was brilliant, new engine fitted and all costs met by landrover. We then part/ex for a golf which is very good. However missed the freelander so much that we have part/ex our other car for a 2.0 tdr, which i pick up on friday.

I have owned my 2003 TD4 Freelander for 7 months, I purchased it in March this year with 7 months manufacture warranty left on the vehicle. Never had a major problem until NOW, the warranty expired at the end of October and on sunday I visited my local Landrover Dealer to view the new Freelander and on the way there my gearbox started to make a strange noise? I was advised that the gearbox would need replacing. After only 32,000 miles (full service history) cost of £2,700. after a number of calls to the customer service department they finaly offered me 50% after thier 1st offer of 33%towards the replacement gearbox, this still leaves me with a bill of £1,350. I feel very bitter and the car has been removed from the dealer to a gearbox specialst and I am waiting to hear the final outcome. I have been a Landrover owner for over 15 years and I feel that they have failed to support me in this matter. The big question is will I be placing my order for the New model for the March registration the answer has to be NO, their loss not mine at £20,000 for the entry vehicle. The 4x4 market is becoming more and more competitive and I feel Landrover has forgot who the customer is.

I bought a 2000 'W' reg 1.8XEi a year ago with 48,000 miles and FSH.

Head gasket ,starter motor ,various electrical gremlins.

Most worrying was three of the studs on the back wheel sheared off last week inexplicably ,considering the wheel has never been off the thing in a year.

Missed shifts ,car hire and taxi's have left me a fortune out of pocket.

I paid 6000 for it ,if I get 2000 i'll be delighted.

Luckily my employer is being bought over and i'm getting money for my shares so I can afford to get rid of this heap of junk ,I pity those not so fortunate.

If you're thinking of buying one please DON'T. You'd get a more reliable car spending 500 quid at the auctions.

after buying a 3 door freelander td4 in september 2005 i had it replaced in july this year after a host of problems.
unfortunately the new vehicle has had another gutfull of problems which have all been fixed bar one. there is a delay when throttleing up which is an intermittent problem and the dealer has told me they cant find anything wrong despite having the car in twice.
has anyone else had this problem and have they been able to have it rectified?

Looks like i'm the latest victim to this head gasket farce!!

Just had the RAC tow my Freelander into Beadles of Sidcup. Looks like the head gasket.......losing water, not much power, and water obviously in the oil when i checked the dip stick.

It's a T/1999 1.8i that i bought from this LandRover Dealership 4 years ago with a 3 year warranty. It was serviced by them regularly except for the last service that i had done in July of this year.
Does anyone know where i stand legally? Surely if Landrover knew of this problem shouldn't they have recalled all these vehicles with this particular engine? Surely i could take them to court for gross negligence in not informing all the owners of this particular model?

I haven't been told what the actual damage is on mine yet but having read some of the horror stories on this website i'm preparing for the worst.

Will keep you all informed.

Hi,
I bought a second hand 2001 about 2 years ago at 40,000 km. and soon after I bought it I faced gearbox problems in a month and took it to service and was told by the service that 2001 models frequently had this sort of problem and that the gearbox had to be replaced. I was charged to pay 25 percent of the cost since it was not under warranty. This year in August my two rear windows motors went off one after the other in a month. I discovered that the sunroof motor was replaced by the previous owner, and I dare touch it, the sunroof is not working properly and causing other problems. I never had so many problems in any other car over the last 30 years.

Well, i've had my 2002 1.8 ES Freelander 4-door for just over 12 months now. Loved it when I saw it, loved it when I got in and drove it but problems........

1, My hill descent and traction control lights came on as I was driving and went off again after about 5 or 10 minutes. Phoned local landrover who said it was one of those things and that it should rectify itself!!! even though the handbook says it needs looking at by a dealer!!!.

2, First time it snowed I was driving, the lights came on and the engine revs shot up to over 5000. Scared the hell out of me and had to pull over in the snow on a blind bend on a dual carriageway. Got myself going after half an hour of letting it sit there with fingers crossed that I wouldnt get creamed by a passing lorry.

3, The air con in the passenger side has a duct from the heater to the evaporator which comes off !!!! I don't know whether it was this or a blockage in the outlet but the carpet was drowned and stank when I pulled the carpet back. Had a go at it this weekend to put it back on and found that the heater end was just a short pipe with a bit of foam on it, so dead easy for someone to knock off. I put some cable ties on it and tightened them up as much as I could. Impossible to get your hands around to check it was on properly.

4, There was a technical bulletin which I had with the RAVE download (which I recommend by the way) Bulletin No 0007 CDS ref L8429bu Issue 2 date 27 01 99. Which explained the fix for this problem and followed as closely as I could even though the pictures were wrong. The evaporator unit is about 1 inch away from the bulkhead so no carpet cutting apart from underneath it could be done.

5, The passenger footwell carpet is held in place by a button - this screws off - I've had to order one at 35p as I pulled it straight off. This doesn't matter as the carpet is stuck or jammed in place and wont come out for me to dry it.

I've now resorted to pulling the carpet up as much as possible and jamming paper towels in to soak up the moisture from the sound deadening and I even bought one of those moisture traps and stuck it under the carpet to soak up some as well. Something I havent had to do since my old Ford Escort 1.3 1985.

PS don't leave your heater on full for a long period. I ws doing this to dry it out and, just as I was pulling onto a dual carriageway on the way home, it decided to pack up and the car immediately fogged up. I thought the car had set on fire from how much it fogged!

Nice car to drive but I think I will buy something foreign next time fed up of fords and rovers.
