Update Just received call from LR Customer Services who have said because I cannot provide evidence of service history post 2 years old, they have looked into my case and cannot be of any help. I have told them they will be hearing from the legal eagles. As my previous review of today states: any disatisfied Freelander owners, please contact Irwin Mitchel on 0870 1500 100. I've also let our personal friends know in the USA about this unfortunate situation and advised them not to buy Landrover.
I have contacted Irwin Mitchell (from the Watchdog programme) who all of you can contact (if you haven't done so already)on 0870 1500 100. They are colating complaints (300 registered already). I have an S reg Freelander 1.8 which has had abundant problems of the same kind as most of the comments on this website. I have paid over £3000 to replace the engine and the LR Customer Services team have been unhelpful. I have informed Irwin Mitchell about this website and hopefully they will take a look with interest at the large amount of disatisfied Freelander owners. They are taking initial steps towards formulating a group claim.

Norway here ! 1999 petrol 1,8 after 30000km new gasket(top) New tyres every 15000km. after 70000km new front propeller shaft, costs 700 pund uk. Dont by this car! Hilsen Rune
We have had so many problems with our 2001 V6 that we are nuts to keep it
Problems to date:
HDC light problem - Complete braking system changed, 3 x ECU's changed, complete wiring loom, throttle body replaced (fixed problem and only took Roverland in New Zealand 10 months to fix) The original problem was dirty ABS wheel sensors and the throttle body problem was introduced by Roverland while trying to fix the original problem.
Oil leak rear main bearing (engine) - seal replaced
Oil leak IRD unit - seal replaced
Auto transmission harsh changes - new transimssion
Sunroof would not close - fixed
Timing belts replaced at 50,000km instead of 120,000km - stretched plus idler gears very noisy - also replaced - expensive
Radio not working - changed
Clock display not working - changed
Rear parking sensor not working - fixed
Wheel bearing noisy - replaced
Broken exhaust mounts on rear - replaced
Overheating at times - still not resolved - Roverland New Zealand gave up on the problem
Sticky hydraulic lifter - caused by 20,000km service intervals - still under action
Most of this was under warrenty but we are now out of warrenty and it is costing us, not to mention the high fuel consumption. The gearbox, sunroof, oil leaks, HDC light problem are very common problems - don't get a sunroof and if you do, don't use it, it WILL break
WE WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER LANDROVER PRODUCT AND WISH THAT WE NEVER BOUGHT THIS ONE BUT CANNOT AFFORD TO GET RID OF IT - IT HAS DEPRECIATED SOOOO MUCH.
I own a 1999 Freelander 1.8xei and last Friday the Head Gasket went - have been quoted £2250.00 for a new engine. I missed the Watchdog programme but will be straight on the phone to LR Customer Services tomorrow morning!! Other problems encountered since purchasd in 2001 are: Fault with back door window (going up and down of its own accord!), Power Steering leak, New anti-roll bars had to be fitted, problems with Air Conditioning unit, clock display half disappeared... the list goes on - one thing for sure is that I won't be buying another LR!
LR have now changed their minds and have reduced the offer to 50% part, 0% labour, which I am not accepting. The problem lies with the fact that my car is more than 5 years old (by 2 months!) and the Customer Service bod I spoke to originally is on holiday in Lanzarote and made an "error of judgement" - pleeeeez! has anyone else had an "old" Freelander engine replaced by LR?
Just found this website, having had my 1.8 Freelander towed back home after the head gasket has blown after 50,000 miles. Fortunately it is under 2 years old so hopefully covered under warranty. I'll just have to wait & see tomorrow but I will certainly be mentioning Watchdog !
Head gastket blew at 50k - replaced at a cost of £2000 only to break down again 13 months later. as it was 3 weeks over warranty, Land Rover refused to reimburse the cost (another £700).
I own a Freelander 1.8Xi Freelander and the problems I have had are Head gasket failure, leaking power steering pump, clock display going. Rang LR customer services 5/11/03 and they have offered 100% refund on parts and 50% on labour refund for the head gasket replacement. I want 100% refund and due a call back later today for 2nd review. I will let you know how it went. My advice is push for 100% plus your expenses.
I bought a 1.8 freelander for my wife 6 months ago and the head gasket blew 4 weeks ago. I could'nt afford the £3500 for a new engine quoted by my local dealer. I found a very helpful independent Land Rover specialist who quoted £2,000 for a remanufactured engine (Turner engineering (via VEGE)excellent company!!!) (which i've heard is all you get from Land Rover anyway!!) with a full 12 month parts and labour warrenty. The new engine incorporates the latest Post MY01 design changes i.e modified head gasket, remote mounted thermostat. I've been told the design fault is with the cooling system rather than the engine itself. Does anybody know whether this problem is still apparent with post MY01 models?
I'll think the moral of the story is keep it cool!! keep an eye on the gauge and watch you water levels, and check the fan works every now and again, and last but not least buy Japenese!!!.
I brought my car 2 years ago from brand new cost me all my svings and have had nothing but trouble from it. I have had a head gasket go . I told them my brakes and clutch weren't right and that my reverse gear was crunching. I was told all ok and that the crunching was a characteristic of the car. Now 2 years down the line after new clutch plate .New brakes and discs( which they blamed on me) and loads of other stuff . I got the AA in and he has given me a lsit of things wrong including a transmission oil leak which really should have been picked up when it was in yet again 2 weeks ago. Also he said that the reverse and 2st gears( might be the master cylinder. What do I do?Help
WELL LADS I TO HAVE A FREELANDER,WITH THE K ENGINE IN.ITS A 1999 AND HAD TO HAVE A NEW ENGINE IN JAN 2003 WITH 40,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK.IT COST ME £3000 FOR THIS ENGINE,AFTER THE HEAD GASKET WHEN AT 40,000. IT STILL KEEPS BREAKING DOWN, WITH ONE THING OR ANOTHER.IE NEW PETROL PUMP,NEW EXHAUST WHEN THE BACK BOX BROKE OFF AT THE REAR BRACKET.WATER LEAKING INTO THE TOOL BOX AT THE REAR.CLOCK DISPLAY STOP WORKING.WE NOW HAVE GOT BACK BRAKES BINGING,AND THERE IS A VIBRATION IN THE CAR.ALSO GEARBOX HARD TO GET REVERSE.
Having left my LandRover at Harwoods for the last week - LandRover have agreed to pay 100% parts and labour. Well done LandRover Customer Services Department!
6 Month old TD4 problems with emissions light comming on when going up hill then loss of power as computer puts engine in safe mode, after 5 visites to the local main dealer and lots of parts replaced the problem still persists Landrover Technical Dept are now getting involved.
This is truly worst car that I have ever owned, or indeed that I have heard of anyone owning.
First Engine replaced at 48000miles due to head gasket blowing, now a second gasket has blown at 78000miles meaning another engine.
My extended warranty has refused to cover the damage citing it as a design fault, and therefore not covered.
Trying to get any resolution out of Landrover is nightmare, I seriously hope this vehicle puts them out of business.
Now I have to consider scrapping a vehicle that I purchased a little over 2 years ago for £14000, as quite honestly it is not worth the £4000 - £5000 expense of a new engine. (Which I cant afford anyway!)
I loved my 1999 50th anniversary softback freelander which looks like the puppys parts, had it new from Conwy landrover who are superb. Suited my lifestyle perfectly,2 large dogs touring europe holidays etc.Apart from the standard of workmanship and SERVICE from EVANS HALSHAW HANLEY STAFFORDSHIRE LANDROVER! My local dealer unfortunately, the many small probs I have had have been sorted out whilst under warranty eventually when took to Conwy LR.Which include the usual windowregulators, handbrake, front suspension clunks, sticking on accelerator and various other small rattles.Despite all these I still liked it till the left hand side of rear diff failed which turns out to be one of the many faults which LR KNOW ABOUT and I didnt till I looked on here and other internet sites. The car has just run out of the extended warranty at 4 years which is not worth the paper its written on as they will try and wriggle out of anything and do not cover the same as the LR own so did not take it out again so obvoiusly thats when something expensive goes!!2 months after.Hanley LR wanted over £1200 for the repair Conwy just over £600 guess where I went!.LR Customer services are not interested in helping with the repair, apparently thats how long you should expect a rear diff to last on a freelander..So just waiting for the Head gasket to go. Its a shame LR dont look after there customers better, I was going to get a td4, not any more. Wish I could Say differently.
