After a new engine and clutch was fitted in my Freelander 99 5dr 1.8i 50th Anniversary 6 weeks ago 500 miles and yes blown again, need to have yet another new engine. This is probably the worsted car to ever roll off a production line I hate it, if you are thinking of buying one don’t you will regret it trust me, Buy a TD4 if you must.

Its looks to me that the same person wrote 90% of the emails below. Good effort though if you have a grudge! My 1.8 is 3 years old with 24k on clock. No problems for me.

I bought a 2004 Freelander SE in December 2003. I have had ongoing problems with this car including, the CD player not working (and it took the garage two months to repair!), paint marks on the roof when delivered, the front seats rattle all the time and the alarm goes off whenever it rains (living in Scotland this is a problem!).

The only off road driving this car has done is in the garage! The reliability and standards of customer service is shocking. Do not buy one!

I own a Landrover 2.5 V6 - i really enjoy it- got it really cheap - and it had only done 2300 miles when i bought it. It has now done 19,000 and is currently in the Land Rover dealers because it is leaking coolant. On the 3 occaisions i have vistited the garage they refused to believe that this is due to the head gasket, beacause "We are aware of the problem with other models but it does not affect the V6".
So they just kept changing the coolant cap.

My cars engine is now in bits and they think its the head gasket - add to that they have found a problem with the braking system and the engine was making a repetitive tapping noise.

Good news is though - its all under warranty and wont cost me a penny

Hi, another T reg 1.8 petrol freelander owner here!!...48K FSH ( though not landrover)....doing 60 and thunk..steam and crap come pouring out under the bonnet. Thing is I borrowed money from my old man to buy it stating " I commute so many miles isn't it worth buying a car that won't blow up within a year?!!?...he agreed!!"

Will never by Landrover/Rover again....think I'll go back to the Japanese market...cheap and reliable...

Have left numerous messages with LR head office..but surprise surprise no reply.....will keep trying if only to spend 30 Minutes screaming at them down the phone!!!!

Am also consdiering trying to get top gear or similar to look into whether it's a design fault..has anyone tried that route?

On the subject of a small claims case, you are right about it being a design fault.BUT at present it is an opinion. I know as well as you do that it is design fault, but LR will not admit it. Even when you confront them with the fact that more than 500 of us are in the que to sue, they won't admit it.
WE NEED ABSOLUTE PROOF THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FAULT.Otherwise we could fail. I doubt that a small claims will succeed as LR will claim it is your word against theirs.

Anyone got actual proof which will stand up in court?

Mr Smith

My Head gasket has apparently just gone aswell. I have only owned the 98R 1.8xsi for two months. I did buy the car from a Garage and this did come with a warranty with them. It has a FLRSH uptill the time I bought it so in theory should they help with the fees. As I think my warranty with the Car is only valid upto £300 pound. Any help or phone numbers would be appreciated.

Thanks

Phill

I am one of the many who owns a T reg 1.8 petrol Freelander and at 63,000 miles and a FSH experienced the steaming bonnet and head gasket problem.

I have phoned land rover who are to look at the problem and make a contribution - watch thsi space...

However, not wanting to get all legal or anything BUT - the head gasket has failed before a "reasonable" amount of time/mileage....if the car has been serviced regularly, then it hasn`t been misused or neglected, therefore if you can prove to the dealer that it is a design flaw, then they should provide a free of charge repair (sic). For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) consumers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement). At present, the onus is on consumers to prove the good did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).

Q10. What can I do to claim damages or if the retailer will not honour my rights?

The Small Claims Court procedure provides the means to bring a claim, for up to £5000, at modest cost and without the need for a solicitor. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau can advise on how to make a claim.

I own a T Reg freelander 1.8 and surprise surprise the head gasket has gone have been given a quote by main dealers beadles in sidcup for £3600
which is a lot of money to a single parent. Even with a new engine that is only has 1 year warranty it is not guaranteed the problem will not arise again.Never again would i buy a freelander and have advised my brother who was about to go in for a brand new one to think again.

re cylinder head gasket.
i have had the engine repaired at a cost of 1400 euros and am still trying to claim from the original dealer these costs. however there is no guarantee that the problem wont arise again, and as i am totally fed up with the situation tried to trade the car in for something else, but now find that the residual price of the car seems to have fallen considerably since this problem has been highlighted.
we seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place. can we claim for this diference from landrover as well.
this whole situation is a joke and the so called customer care centre are as helpful as their cars are reliable!!never again.

I have an R reg Freelander 1.8 petrol (2nd owner). I had a new wheel bearing at 40K, and am now awaiting it coming out of the garage with a new cam-belt (which snapped at 67K whilst stationary), new cylinderhead, and a new water pump, for which I will be £1200 lighter (if I had taken it to a main dealer Lord knows what it would have cost). Discussing it with the mechanic (who also owns a Freelander)the petrol engine is a serious reliability concern. A great shame, as otherwise it has been fantastic.

My 2000 XEi 1.8 just blew a head gasket with 95,000 klm on the clock. I guess I have been waiting for it to happen. Around $2,000 Aus dollars to get it fixed. Good news, Land Rover are paying 50%. Be nice if they paid all of it but, that would be a perfect world. Been a good car to date with only a few problems, one caused by by the dealer when they forgot to tighten a hose to the power steering.

Another head gasket problem!!! 50K on the clock, service 2 months ago, needs a new engine!!! gotta be kidding. Have not chased or followed up anything as just happened. This is unacceptable and LR must be held accountable for what keeps being referred to as an'inherent' problem!!! Will join any class action and will be pursuing every route possible to come up with the £3k work.

I bought a 2003 td4 last March. It has covered 20k trouble free miles and is a delight to drive. The ride is excellent, speed adequate (100mph), and fuel economy pretty good (37/38 mpg). The offroad performance is considerably better than I expected. I took it on its first greenlane jaunt with less than 200 miles on the clock. The moderate ground clearance means that picking the right line is more important than in a Defender. The electronic traction control is fantastic and means the car happily outperforms a non ETC Defender on snow and slick surfaces. I thoroughly recommend this machine from my experience of it. Is the moral - only buy the td4?
