I bought my 1987 5-dr Hatchback Sierra Ghia for only about Eighty Great Brittain Pound! It was a two-owner, white manual model with electric everything. Runs great except for blown aircon and a due clutch change.
I reckon the car now at either 24k km or 124k km (yes the odometre has only 5 digits) still has 160,000 km to go before it gives up the ghost.
Bodily, it has no rust. Parts availability is good, with silly prices, like an aftermarket clutch spring plate for one hundred pounds, break pads for a lunch's cost, breakers' support etc

Sierra Cosworth. 2lit DOHC 16v Turbo
Incredible performance, the best 'bang per buck' bar none, no arguments. Reliability depends on the how the car has been treated. If you buy a bad example, it will be costly. Better to spend a little extra a good one. The rush that my car gives is simply awesome, and I'd owned a 911 and a Fireblade previously.

sapphire 2.0 DOHC, 4X4 GHIA. Top handling, specs great. little bit flat bottom end, up there will keep pulling. Warning. Dont take the fuel gauge to heart, not quite the cars best point. Looks are good, comfort etc. I Love it.

Choose an Xr4x4 and you'll get more than a car, you'll have a machine. All in all it will provide you with performance, handling and still maintain the usefullness of a hatchback. Be carefull not to buy a "dog" as there are more of these around than good ones. points to be aware of are leaky or rattley gearboxes and blowing oil vapour from the oil filler cap. Leave well alone! Body wise, Henry ford paid more attention to these cars and they don't generally rust as per the run of the mill Sierras.

You definately get good value for these cars. And what has more of an image problem, a tidy understated Sierra, or a 10 year old boy racered BMW? Service support can be important on older cars. Try buying a new fuel tank for a BMW. You would probably have to get it from a BMW main dealer, and it would almost certainly cost more than the car is worth. Not so for Ford bits, as even at the dealers, they tend to be reasonable most times. Also pretty plentiful down the breakers :-)
Mine went on for ages. It was an estate, and was great for the family and the dog.
Watch out for rust around the wheel arches and the bottom of the doors. Should be pretty obvious unless someone's covered it up with a bunch of filler.

Best cheap transport available! Design still modern-looking, reliable mechanics, 2,0 has plenty low-end grunt compared to more modern cars. Practical and lots of space, all kinds of tuning and styling parts available. Only drawback would be the image...
PS: As for Manufacturers Service Support, who cares with cars older than a few years?
