I have just purchased a 1993 2.0 GLSi Sapphire with 97k on the clock. The bodywork is fabulous, needs slight attention to rear arches. Drives brilliantly, bit sluggish below 3000 rpm but keep the revs up and it goes like stink! An all round great car, go out and buy one NOW!
Sierra Saff 2.0 Ghia DOHC 1990/G I've owned my sierra for nearly 5yrs, it had 70K miles on the clock when i got it and cost me £2000, it now has 156K on the clock. There is no rust on it and has been very reliable.
About to fit new suspension as its got a bit tired, exhaust is still the original one which looks ok but must be a bit chocked up inside, so may replace soon. Engine has not been touched apart from i'm on my 3rd rocker cover (made of plastic, split and leak oil). The only problem ive had was the auto box died at 80K miles, recons where £600 but got a good second hand box for £100. It will take some beating on running cost!!!!!
As for toys....Electric windows, PAS, ABS(Discs all round), heated screen etc
Just referring to an earlier comment... -You'd be better off with a 10 year old BMW, I've got one. -Thet're more sylish than Sierras, better built and actually quite cheap to own. Now, throw in PAS, electric windows, rear wheel drive and 50/50 weight distribution: still want a Sierra???
We had a 1987 2.0 GLSI from 1992 until 1997. It cost next to nothing to maintain other than oil changes, we replaced the front roll bar bushes a couple of times and the clutch cable bracket developed metal fatigue and the thermostat cover corroded, all of which was cheap to fix, other than that it was very reliable although slightly heavy on petrol. We loved it.
I bought a Sierra 2.3DL (Diesel) in 1987 overall its was a very reliable car, buying parts were easy and fairly cheap, any garage could fix any problem quickly. My biggest regret is I didn't have 'Power Steering' I think this is a MUST for ANY diesel car.
I have owned quite a few of these cheap motors. Unfortunately all of them have been an absolute let down. They live up to there name as "Fixed Or Repaired Daily". They have all rusted terribly (including my J reg) and have been as reliable as a chocolate fireguard. I found the cars to be quite noisy too, alot more noisy than other cars I have owned. I didnt like the ride either, it was "boat like" and the seats gave me terrible backache on long journeys.
The look of the car is now very dated and for the same money there is better looking cars out there. The only good point about owning Sierras is that parts are plentiful & cheap and it helped me gain alot of knowledge in DIY car mechanics!
Then there is the dreaded M.O.T.! Every time M.O.T. time came around I had to have welding done, not even the J reg escaped, it needed a patch on the chassis. They must be the worst car I have ever owned, it was also the thurstiest car too, even with the emmissions set correctly. I am definately all for my trusy Vauxhall Cavalier now. Sorry Ford Lovers!
2.0 i (twin cam)solid car, cams tend to tick in winter due too thick oil. so its time change it, good oil counts this in mind the engine is good for 150000+. Clutch cables do not last as long as they should, but its an easy job to do and will cost £12 all in all a good but under rated car.
i have a 1.8 gl you cant go wrong with this car for cheap reliable motoring it hasnt got much image (if you worry about those things) but it will go on for ever depending on model chosen it will perform most tasks with ease .
Out of all sierras` you can`t beat the lovely but rare RS 500 Cosworth, with it`s amazing power &road-holding capabilities. They may be hard to find but you won`t be disapointed with this true thoroughbred.
These cars are good value and if there is no rust, go on for ever, the original 2.0l injection is the best compromise of fuel economy, performance and reliability Ive had 2 which were both excellent ,also easy to fix and service yourself

If you had any sense you would not buy a Ford for a start, hopelessly unreliable rot ridden cars. Just because a Sierra can do 163mph does not make it a good car. It may well be a fast car, but i think we are getting carried away to call it a good car. Mind you any Japanese high performance saloon will of course run rings around your 3.2 Sierra. You certainly would'nt keep up around the corners. Still their cars alot more than £200 to buy, so one would expect them to outperform your Ford.

Having owned two 2000e's I found the Sierra a reliable and fun car to be in. My XR has a power engineering 3.2 litre conversion poly bushed all round 16inch escort cossy wheels does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and max speed of 163 mph - not many Cavalier's would do that!!
Get some sense - get the blue oval

I own a Sapphire 1.6 l(South Africa). The engine is an x-flow unit with a 4-speed gearbox. No performance but excellent fuel consumption and reliability. Great car to own, will never sell it, might do something about the performance/power.

to be quite honest I don't like the car at all. It handles terrible and to be truthful it is not as fast as people make out. There is no way it would come close to a car such as say.... the vw corrado VR6

Ford Sierra 2.3 GHIA. This car has been in my family since 1983.I have since resprayed the car (after using 3-reels of mig wire,4ft*4ft of sheet steel and new rear arches!!)making it look as good as it was back in 83.I am truly happy using this car now knowing i can drive to work and not see another like it,and am not picking up monthly payments for a new car.The 8-month restoration was well worth the effort as i am now the owner of a "new" sierra. I found parts are easily aquired, although Ghia bits (eg interior trim), are quite difficult to find for a MK1 in good condition.Friends and family think i am mad to spend so much time and money on a 20 year old Sierra, but i think it looks great, its very reliable, and it's paid for!!
