Bought Ford Sierra 1.8LX Estate Christmas 2002, at Auction for £150. It's clean, reliable and a family car with cheap running costs. Its a multifunctional, band wagon, skip, van, tow truck, dog transport, caravan puller, school bus. Quick vax once a week and it comes up like new. Only downside, kids embarassed alongside friends Mercs, BMW, Shoguns etc, but its paid for!! Buy a Haynes manual, and it'll cost you now't. Oil change quarterly and it'll run like a dream. Don't knock it till you've tried it!!
Hya i have just purchased a Ford Sierra Sapphire 1.8 LX and i am very pleased with it.It is so comfortable and quiet to drive and pulls very strongly on the roads especially motorways with ease.Theres not alot i dont like about it at the moment everything seems to be up to scratch the bodywork is outstanding with only a little inch of bubbling rust at the rear right wheel arch which i can sort out other than that its in mint condition I paid 695 for it and part exchanged my old 1.6 ghia c reg escort in for 150 the the dealer added Ford alloys and brand new tyres off another sierra he had at the time so i got it all for 605 so i was very happy. It's nicer to drive than the escort thought i would lose that nippyness of the escort but no , its more refined and still has the power there its just more deceptive as top end power is great which i missed in the escort it copes very well.It has a full service history and i am the third owner, the first owner actually knows my father believe it or not how amazing is that! and the second owner is in my home town so it was locally serviced.Above all this tho, unfortunately just recently someone took a dis-like to it and scatched the right rear door so i am having that re-sprayed but apart from that the car is superb to look at and drive.Good old ford reliable and never ending to satisfy !
I've got a 1992 1.8 GLXi hatchback (CVH CFi engine). Reliable, wicked to drive, cheap as chips to run and I can get a single bed in the back with the boot closed. What a load lugger...! Cost me £380.
My first car was a 1.6L Sierra Sapphire (Saloon). It had virtually no guts to it at all...big car, little engine but it went along nicely.
The brakes on it were insane, so responsive, you just had to tap them and you would stop and it was very cheap to run and maintain, fuel economy could have been better but it still did a good amount to the gallon, I had a catalyst fitted so that it would run unleaded without wearing down the valve seats.
It terms of non-service maintenance, in the 18 months I ownded it I had to change the back box on the exhaust after it went after some freezing snow escapade....that cost like £35!!
Very comfortable too!...especially in the back, was a nice car to drive, Sierras have a really nice driving position with a high raised centre console and slanted gear stick.
Sierras do tend to rust in two key places....the rear wheek arches and the top of the front doors, mine was no exception, also had a small amount of water leakage in the boot.
My uncle has owned about half a dozen sierras from 1.8's to V6's and has loved them all...he current has an estate 2.0i that he is very happy with.
Purchased 'd' reg 2.0GL auto in 98 at auction for just £250!(becase nobody in auction wanted an auto.) Turned out to be most reliable banger I've ever driven out of 11 sub £500 cars ever purchased. The only thing I did to it was to replace cap, rotor, plugs and leads for £30 as a matter of course at purchase and exhuast system for £70 after 10 months. It had 140k on clock at the auction and 190k when I sold it.Most driving was motorway and these cars are so reliable for this. Also, who said auto boxes are dodgy on cars of this age/mileage,maybe I was just lucky-it was totally fautless.I have owned other cheapies like cavaliers,Astras,Escorts,Renaults and a Volvo 340 and none came close to the sierra for motorway driving and mech reliability. Some of the negative comments on this site about the sierra I think are probably the result of the car's image as being a boring man's car or middle/old aged man's car and it is more 'hip' to drive an Astra or Cavalier, etc. The thing about the sierra is it's use of tryed and tested old technology whereas other manufacturers tended to try more new technology,I mean it's not even front wheel drive for starters and the pinto engine is ancient technology amongst others. The Pinto is big, heavy and strong, easy to maintain, easy for parts and easy to tune and I use it in short circuit motor racing along with countless others.
I have had to repair alot of Fords over the years, And the Sierra is the worst of them all. Its basically a Ford Cortina, reformed to look like a Wedge to fit in with trends of the mid 80's. The Pinto lumps are as old as the hills, gobble Petrol and have little to offer in terms of real preformace. The V6, again a very old design has good tourqe figures for the size of the car. Its Only really worth bothering with the 2.3, due to there shorter piston stoke they rev better, As the 2.8 and 2.9 are juicy and pretty underpowed considering a 2.0 Vauxhall kicks out the same power and pulls better beyond 4500rpm. Do yourself a favor and get another car. i cant think of anything good, besides the cool rumble from the tailpipe before i got bored of it and sold it to my mate, and believe me i felt well guilty id sold him my money pit.
Have owned 2 sierra's. 2.0i DOHC Ghia and the rarer 2000E. They may not be everybody's cup of tea but for me, a sierra is what I will go for everytime. For shear power, comfort, control a sierra beats most other cars.
I have a 2.0i DOHC XR4x4, it cost me £450 with a C.D player in it. It goes like "Stink" sticks to the road like "Snot" and with the ABS system stops on a "Dime" Name me another car for this kind of money that you get this kind of fun from. it is loaded with ABS,PAS,EW,ESR,EHM,RCL, what more could you want? Phil..
I've had my Sierra 2.0l 8v dohc carburettor model for just over two years. I love the space in the cabin (I'm 6'6" tall), the driver's seat, the fuel economy and the low down torque. I hate the door locks that wear badly, and the fact that it has had two cylinder head gaskets go (different engines) at less than 100k miles (I'm going to have to change the second one this weekend, having had all the coolant disappear into number three cylinder this morning!). Even though it's a Ford, it isn't a cheap job.
hi folks i own 2.0 dohc i need a downpipe 1st section for the car.I live in the manchester area its a H reg can anyone help email me [Log in to view email] ty.
Parents used to own a estate xr4x4 and it was rapid!! Just bought myself a banged up siera ready to be used in a kit car. I'm using the 2.0GLSi single overhead cam pinto. The car has done a fair mileage but still starts first time. Should create a rapid kit car. It'll skin most BMW alive when I'm finished.
I'm 17 and I inherited my mums G reg 2.0gl Sierra Estate(mercury Grey) as she needed a new car. The Vauxhall place offered £1 in part exchange for the vectra, So my mum gave it to me. I have a full cosworth bodykit,17inch momo sports and full leather out of a 2000e. The car when tuned goes very well it's enough to keep up with most 110bhp cars. The car has no rust whatsoever not even underneath. I need a 350 bhp 2wd cosworth engine in it and then my estate will be spanking all those new mercs, and bmw's no probs. Dave McNamara
I am finding it difficult to say anything about ownership as yet. I have just bought a D reg. Sierra XR 4X4 2.8 V6 car. it is 5 door. and I want your opinion on where to get parts etc. please help everyone. email me [Log in to view email] thanks guys.
i have a 1.6l sierra estate and apart from a clutch replacement a back boz and a couple of tyres it hasn`t given me an ounce of ag,,,,it may not be the fastest or most stylish car on the road but i would def have another one....i`m off to look at another at the weekend.....who needs bmw?
Had my 2L GL Est from new as my company car in 83 (on an A). Bought it off the Co for £25 5 years ago. Now on 90k and just had 4 tyres and replacement screen to get through the MOT. What else will take an 8x4 sheet of ply and cost nothing to run .. When this one dies (or the missus kills it as she keeps trying to) I'll get another!
Cam belt went at the lights the other day ... ('safe engine' all you 16V fans!) One our and £15 later it was back on the road! ;-)
It tows all sorts of stuff with ease and takes a 16' canoe on it's long roof.
by they way, both our sierra's had PAS, Elecy windows and all sierra's are rear wheel drive! Who gives a crap what the weight distribution is... they can pull caravans and large trailers better than volvo's... good enough for me and many caravan owners. Don't see many BM's hauling ass and putting in the effort!
To the dude going on about the BMW... as you said... they are cheep to run and own... thats why you have one. You are the sort of person who comes into our place at work and buys a BIG BMW because we're the only place that will aprove you on car finance for such a car exept you pay 15k for the car by the time u've finished paying it of it's 25k becuase of high interest on HIGH RISK candidates! BMW's - poor man's Jags/Mercs! I'd sooner have a sierra to be totally honest and be someone i am not trying to be somthing i'm not... all the BMW's Part Exchanges we have are very ropey owned by people such as your self who think a BMW is soming it's not... FAST and rag the nuts off them and think they're somthing they're not... thats why they are at our place to get finance on a car they can't really afford but they wish to carry on their trend or wanna-b-snobs! To be honest... Fords are faster and just as stylish!
My dad's second one (First review below) it's a K-reg 1.8lxi saffy! It came in as a Px at work (Car dealership) with MOT til April. New clutch, decent tyres and in general good condition. for it for £150 (Perks of motor trade) he sold his Volvo 940 for it and although ride is not as good he says it pulls out 14foot caravan BETTER than the 2.3 volvo did! What can i say? if i could insure it he'd have had to fight me for it! FORD RULE
I bought a white 1988 2.0 model last August for £150 and so far it has only cost me £125 for the MOT and two new tyres. A fab car...yes it's heavy on petrol but can still take on some of the newer little cars at traffic lights!
We had a 1987 2.0GL in the family for many years. Although a bit rusty and the big old 2.0 was loud due to the knocking cam and tapets she still had a load of power and never let us down. Probally one of the best cars we ever had!! But it must be said they are heavy on fuel and since i've started working at a car dealership we have a few in as part exchanges they are heavy on stearing but it's all good. Tend to find lots of gadgets for an old car. I wouldn't say no to one (although my insurance and petrol budget would)
