Having owned 2 Rover 820 Si models sequentially for 6 years until June last year and in 100k+ thrashed around europe from Sicily to Amsterdam, Portugal to The Brenner pass without any on-the-road breakdowns my partner and I were somewhat dubious as to whether we should buy a '75. However, we looked at the comparison between the econony/performance, and decided that a diesel would save us 100s of pounds a year so we took a 2002 2.0 Turbo diesel Club for a test-drive. After the rocket-like acceleration of the 820Si the car seemed a mite sluggish, but second and third gear allowed the well-set up turbo to do it's thing. After the test drive we STILL weren't sure, but took the plunge and got a 2yo gold metallic r75 with 44k on the clock for 6750squids + a 12 month/12k pan-european guarantee! The week after, we left the UK and drove to holland, south into Belgium and Lux, through France to Andorra, and into Spain all the way to Granada. On the way, we got to really LIKE this car. I also got to learn a completely new way of driving. The vehicle gives the impression that it's not doing anything, the extremely quiet diesel purring away, but these things pull like TRAINS. I expected the handling to be a lot heavier than our old 820 but in reality this car handles bends and tight corners the same way it does everything else-as if it hadn't noticed them! The clutch, being cable and not hydraulic like the 800s, was heavy to begin with, but with the excellent traction control on top, even hurried or emergency changes of gear are accomplished smoothly. The ABS brake system is even better than the 800s, and the tyre's are cheaper too! The only problem we've had, back in august, was that the battery came to the end of it's life and was replaced. Tip: if you own ANY rover and travel to Spain, get work done there. A Rover dealer there will charge 30 euros/hour labour and the parts are MUCH cheaper! And they valet the car before giving it back! Someone else mentioned the admiration this car gets. It's true. Rovers in general get a lot of attention from Europeans, especially the French, Spanish and Italians. People, police included, have patted our Rovers all over Europe, but the effect of this vehicle was positively embarrasing at first. The first day in Holland, we came out of a shop to find a crowd of people lening on and talking about the car. As we arrived one of them said "What a beautiful car". All the way south, we heard comments like c'est un super-voiture- it's a super car. Every where we went people wanted to talk about the car. There are plenty of 800s in europe, but very few 75s from what we've seen, so this could be part of it. It just shows what the other countries in Europe think of English cars- I've met a few Spanish and Italian Rover owners, and they are like proud parents!
Whilst in Holland last month, we got a cracked windscreen, and had to take a taxi from the carglass co. to the hotel. The taxi was a large 2-3 yo merc, but the ride surprised the shit out of me. It was chuggy, the bland black dash would've driven me mad after 100 miles with lack of visual stimulation, the suspension was TERRIBLE on the same roads and the large bleak interior made the body noises and clunking very loud.
At present the car has done 60k, the last 16 in the hands of someone not very gentle, and is FINE. People have commented by how nice the car looks, but EVERYONE comments about the leisurely ride. As with the other rovers we've had, as long as they're serviced you start them, thrash them for up to 800 miles in a day, get out, get back in the next day and do the same. Even at over 100mph this vehicle will do 500 miles+ on a full tank! Motoring made easy. Thank you rover, a CLASSIC.

Water drainage from the bulk head seem to be a common problem on the 75, i started having problems when trying to start the car even when i had just switched off. after breaking down the AA said it was a fuel pump problem i took the car to a garage where they fitted a new one within 24 hours the same problem occured again i then took the car to an auto electrician for a diagnostic check where it was found that water had got into the ecu from the bulk head. I have had a lot of trouble getting a replacement the part is now obsolete i have had to send it to autotech to see if they can fit a new circuit board. I have now been waiting a week and not a happy bunny.

Drove 2.0ltr Club in Whitegold for 20k from when it had 55k on the clock.

Colour made the car look quite modern but compacted the car's size visually.

340 miles per tank 75% motorway 25% city driving by mileage.

All passengers commented on comfort of interior seats.

Equipment lacking in the Club - esp needed a CD player.

Footwell trims came off; clutch was set too high making gear change intermittently jumpy; a/c blew out poor quality air; but no further problems encountered as at 75k miles.

Car thrashed by previous owner and not looked after so this was not a great example.

Nevertheless, a good drive esp on motorways where 3rd to 5th gave adequate power when needed.

0-60 not brill, but then it's not set up to be - it's a gent's car not a racer's.

I am now lucky to own an SE Connoissuer 2.0ltr, with 55k on the clock.

Colour Midnight Blue. Makes the car seem larger than the Whitegold and looks more refined to the eye - chrome stands out more, defining the lines further.

Equipment is good, solidly built and smells of quality everywhere.

Best of all, you can get one 2.5 yrs old at 40% of list price when it was new. It is a bargain because of Rover's poor past. The 75 rips up the history.

I have had comments like: "poor man's jag" and "old man's car" from people who have not been in it.

Those who ride in the SE chew on their words afterwards - no joke. A friend who drives an XKR has ordered a fully loaded 75 after driving mine - no joke; there is no comparison intended between these two cars - however the fact he liked the styling and the drive/ride etc speak volumes when he drives a supercar!

I now get 310 miles on a full tank (60 ltrs) made up of 60% motorway 40% city driving by mileage.

Some aircon problems - noisy motor (replaced) and smelly air (bacteria-cleaned), plus some small niggles re buttons/swithes not working to the touch.

In the grand scheme, look at what you get for the money you are paying - it is a steal!

The long suffering Longbridge workers are not at fault for some of the dodgy parts sourced for them by BMW which sometimes don't work well.

Nor are they to blame for the dog-eared parts supply problem legacy of the BMW days. They have proudly put the name of Rover and themselves back on the map with an absolute cracker in the 75.

This car is not for everyone. If you want 0-60, go for a BMW. If you want status, go for a Merc. If you want Board Level, go for the Jag.

If you want understated, refined, luxurious, quiet, unassuming and inexpensive, where no one can really point fingers to place you by your car alone, then a 75 SE Connoissuer should be your 1st choice. It Rocks - oh so very gently!!!

I am lucky enough to have driven two!

Firstly, a 2.0ltr V6 W reg ex co car with 55k on the clock to which I added 20k to. It was a Club, Whitegold, manual.

Verdict:
Comfort: Cloth seats very comfortable - all passengers commented favourably.

Economy: I would get 340 miles on a full tank (60 ltrs), 75% motorway, 25% city in terms of mileage covered.

Power: Low gear set off not the fastest, but the car is heavy and the set up is for economy here. If you want quick 0-60, buy a 'Beamer' - this is not what Rover 75 is about, and should not be judged so. Mid to high gearing is excellent! Power when you really need it on the motorway, and 'gentlemanly' town performance.

Comforts: A/c powerful, but the car's internal design retains heat and therefore needs it! Only had radio/cassette which was annoying. Internal trim attractive and was of a good quality.

Issues:
A/c began blowing poor quality air, requiring anti-bacterial treatment at 75k.

Some small internal trims at foot level came away, with the clips breaking off.

Brake sensor system poor. There is only one each at the back and front. Consequently, if you have uneven pad wear, the sensor will wear if the most wear is on the sensor side - this means you will invariably replace all pads plus the possible cost of both sensors!

Clutch set very high (factory error, never corrected by previous owner on warranty!) and consequently the car would judder on gear changing both up and down intermittently.

Lights failure warning sensor kept coming on and off, even after replacing bulbs 3 times in 6 months. This became v.annoying particularly as it was intermittent.

Unexplained problem - the ignition did nothing when the key was turned. This was bemusing and happened 3 times in one year. No answer from Rover!

Rover kept the car off road for 7 weeks in my total ownership although that was probably much to do with the dealer in SW London rather than Rover; various parts back order problems and the high gear/electrical problems bemusing them all.

Overall a good touring family car, which was mechanically reliable throughout my 1.5 yr ownership, but was poorly treated by a previous owner and hence my experience above.

Second car:

W reg 2.0ltr Connoisseur SE with 55k.

An excellent car! Well treated by last owner. None of the above problems. Certainly all the qualities of the above car plus all the extra equipment makes this one a bargain at 60% off list for a 2.5 year old.

All people who have been in it have commented favourably, particularly on the comfortable ride, seat comfort and understated luxuriousness of the interior.

I get about 310 miles per full tank of petrol, but my driving pattern is now 60% motorway, 40% city in terms of mileage covered.

One person commented as to why I spent £9k on a 2.5 year old Rover, when I could have got a really good BMW or Merc for that money.

I'll tell you why:
-The Rover is understated, elegant and quietly stylish. There are very few BMW's that could honestly categorize thus. Status is (sadly)implicit with the Merc badge.
-The same money would get a 5 year old BMW/Merc and the related repairs costs begin to escalate with German cars this age.
-The 75 is a car with remarkable character.

I have heard "poor man's Jag", "old man's car", "junior management's Roller".

I'll say this only once - my passengers have all swallowed their pride and my XKR driving brother has a (high spec)75 on order today!

Issues: Gear change a little crunchy compared with the last car. Gear cable change has not made a difference, so I am still investigating this one, but as reported in warranty period, no problems expected cost wise.

Cigar lighter door casing doesn't always open when pushed. Warrantied replacement due.

Ditto cruise control button, which does not always work at a feather's touch.

Leather seat side tucks had torn away on both sides of both seats in the posterior areas - warrantied change.

This car is outstanding value for money, so long as you are aware of the odd nagging faults that you will invariably get - more to do with the parts sourced for the car by BMW rather than the proud and rather excellent(and overly criticised) workers at Longbridge who turn out this marvellous motor car.

Hi, I have very recently purchased a 2001 Rover 75 1.8 Club, it has 90K on the clock and is an ex fleet car that has been maintained well and has been service at the correct times.
After not driving the car for a day (when it rained all day), I tried to start the car the next morning and it wouldn't start. I called out the AA, the technician checked battery, leads, fuel cut off switch, spark plugs etc.. all good. He said that the only thing he could think off was maybe the fuel pump had gone. So towed me to the Rover garage (which was closed due to Sat hald day).who are going to look at it on Monday. The tech did mentioned something about a common problem with relay switch on the 75's that if off the car won't start. Has anyone else had starting problems with their 75's?? and has anyone had a fuel pump changed?? and what was the cost?? Many Thanks Arif

I have owned my Rover 1.8 club SE for over 18 months. Car is a pleasure to own and drive. However it has not been fault free. Problems include Pulling to the left whilst braking. Drivers Electric window mechanism failed. Head lamp warning light repeatedly coming on. Rear brake disc corroded to excess. Beware... front brake lining wear limit sensor will probably need replacing if you let your pads wear down to it. This will cost you £69.00 to replace as well as the cost of your pads!!

Would I have another one...You bet!! Diesel Tourer though!!

Thank goodness Rover still have a bad name from days past, at least it means that used 75's are a real bargain. If the public realised that this a nod back to the good old days of Rover, when it was as British and as well put together as a Roller (well, OK, not quite but you know what I mean) then you'd have to pay a lot more than the 10K I have recently spent on a 99 Connoisseur SE Auto (2.0 V6).

This 1 (private) owner car had covered 40k when I bought it, and I've added 2k to it since - yet it still looks 'as new' both inside and out. Perhaps I am lucky, perhaps the previous owner had stuff fixed under warranty, but I've seen nothing of the poorly put together interior trim that some critics complain of.

I have owned and driven more 'executive' cars than I care to remember and whilst the 75 isn't the best (cue Jaguar XJ8 and BMW 5 series) but it is most certainly right up there just a few points behind on performance and residuals, but equally certainly pushing a close second for comfort/trim behind the Jag and way ahead of the lot when it comes to value.

Am I glad I bought it? YES.

Would I buy another? YES

Am I happy to recommend it to others? YES - but only because I have already got mine at a killer price :-)

This car has kindled my interest for the first time in Rover, always having been a Citroen CX fanatic most of my life. It is beautiful car, (especially the rear aspect), and there is something about the design of the doors which brings to mind the solid dignity of the old 3litre and 3.5 litre Rovers of yesteryear. Strange that the marketing people underplay this and say its not a retro design. The interior certainly is. All that remains now is to buy one. Any thoughts on when/where the optimum bargains are on new Rovers? - John.

My Rover 75 2.0 V6 had no serious problems since bought new.
Only the rear doors tend to be a little hard to open, and the passenger door mechanism was faulty, then replaced under warranty. And the sound system is not as good as much cheaper cars.

Other than that, it runs beautiful, if not slow on low revs, handles beautiful, holds like a charm, looks ver classy! Yes, I would buy another! Maybe a 2.5 V6 this time!
