Xantia - a French master piece except for the electrics.
Great ride, smooth turbo diesel, good economy, loads of space,
and excellent value on the second hand market if cared for !
The spheres can be serviced at £15 ea if you know a man that can .....the rest of the service is simple. They do not suffer from rust and a well serviced diesel will go on for 250,000 miles! I traded from a merc ....Ok the build quality is not the same but MUCH cheaper to run and insure.

One if not the best cars i have owned & the ride is superb approx 55 - 60mpg so cheap on diesel, i am fortunate to live close to a citroen dealer, so the few parts i have needed & servicing are fine, i have also towed a 20ft caravan up & down the u.k for a couple of years & would reccomend this car for towing especially the suspension as you drive at a normal ride hieght!!! The brakes are a bit too sharp at first but after a couple of days this turns into a benefit. My clutch pedal has always been high, giving the immpression that the clutch is on the way out but 60000 miles latter it is still the same

I've owned various Citroen cars, invariably with hydropneumatic suspension. My beloved BX GTi was outstanding to drive and own. I believe that the driver always makes the difference; therefore I always took up a challenge or two invariably showing up the VW GTi or Subaru drivers. I always of course took my hat off to the ones that won the duels, never forgetting the VW R32 driver that took a corner at 110mph. However, it was outstanding as a family car, never broke down once and it did on a regular basis pan european tours. I drove it for almost 24hrs non stop once across France, Belgium and Germany!

Things carried on in the same vain with the Xantia VSX. It had been around the houses, but some tender loving care soon had it ticking over nicely. Being more sedate and refined it definately clamed my enthusiasm. That wasn't to last long though as I changed to a Xantia Activa. IT's my current car. It's never broken down once and I've driven it like a really bad racing driver for most of its life. I've done some absurb manoeuvres in that car. The level ride into and out of corners took some getting used to, but once masters I floored it into the corners leaving, for example, the middle aged BMW M5 driver, completely baffled as I left him behind on the A422.

The Activa has done 130,000 miles after 4 years! However, not everything is rosy. I've had 6 near side wheel bearings replaced. The central locking failed, opening spontaneouly randomly evening after locking. The main dealer failed to fix it for a total period of two years. In the end I disconnected it. The dash lights failed and I replaced them myself. The seat fastenings fell out. The near side trim fell off. But, these are age old reliability problems carried over from generation of Citroen models. Quinticentially, the car is great, the engine is superb and well tested. The cast iron engine block and aluminium cylinder head is fail safe. Stick some Halford fully synth in - buy one get one free. Duckhams oil suits the BX engines. It's easy to change the spheres and do a lot of servicing yourself. The llife of spheres is longer than conventional spring mounts, but the ride is heavenly. You can get specially tuned ones too.

I don't think I'll be buying another Citroen purely because I do not believe they have a competent dealer network, although to be fair, the new models are looking classy. I'm moving to Honda.

Having read a few of the other comments, I thought I would like to put in a damage limitation report on behalf of all xantias. I have owned a xantia 1.9td sx estate for nearly 5 years and it has proved to be the most reliable, comfortable and cheap car I have ever owned. She has never let me down, has done over 90k miles, always starts at the first turn of the key despite being terribly neglected, lives outside in all weathers and will still bomb down the motorway at a 110mph [but prefers to sit on 95].

Being a diesel, she is horribly slow in the low gears but once in 3rd gear, will pick her feet up very nicely. She 'rallies' round the country roads and never, ever wobbles on corners no matter how fast yoou take them. When moving house recently, I managed to get as much in the back of her as my hubbie did in his 4x4 mitsubishi.

In short, I adore my old girl. We are talking about trading her in this year for something newer but there is nothing on the market that can compete.

This is my first Xantia and will be my last.
It is a 1.9TD, cost me £9000 3 years ago.
It has only done 51000 miles but in the last year it has had 1 set of new glow plugs, new rear brake discs and now needs new front and rear spheres. It also has a gear box problem.
I am about to trade the car for something smaller. The Xantia is now worth £2500.
Although this car is a wonderful ride and very economical I am disappointed with the number of mechanical problems that I have had.
My next car will definately not be a citroen

90k mile 1.9 TD lx model bought as cheap winter runabout to keep the miles off my other vehicles

After 5000 miles it hasnt let me down but there have been one or two electrical problems so keep a few fuses in the glovebox.

The car is a comfortable main road cruiser but get on the back roads and it can get a bit out of shape if you try to press on. This should be expected though.

If all you want is a cheap reliable run about then I think Xantias are worth a look but I will be selling soon to get something a bit sharper.

Lovely this car is. The driving is ever so smooth, always looking for pitholes in the road for the brilliant suspension. The hydropneumatic thingies are reliable and give this car it's major driving characteristics in my humble opinion. Once you stick to a Citroen of this kind you're hooked...

I had a V6 Xantia Exclusive. The V6 24v engine in the later Xantias is the same as fitted to the Peugeot 406 Coupe, and is a work of genius: 190BHP in the small, light Xantia body is rapid enough - when coupled to the standard 'intelligent' auto transmission, which reads the steering wheel angle, throttle movement and car speed to work out what range of shifting programs to put you in, the overall package becomes just outstanding. You can hear the engine and transmission talking to one another to feather the throttle on up-shifts: the brakes clamp you to the planet like a giant hand (nearly, but not quite, up to XM standards), and the tiny steering-wheel with integrated stereo controls is up there with a Caterham Seven when it comes to responsive turn-in.

Niggles:

- the V6 exhaust is fatter than the others and will 'clonk' on the bodywork if even mildly mis-aligned

- the ultra-smart Hydractive II suspension can make the wrong decision occasionally. When in sport mode it is rock hard (quite literally), and I've fooled it into that state by crossing a short sharp 'sleeping policeman' not quite straight-on

I liked the thing so much that when my partner wanted a car we got her a 2.0 Xantia - in many way s the lesser models have better ride characteristics than the top spec version.

Having upgraded from a FIAT Panda to a
Xantia i expected great things. The
ride is amazing, magic carpet is not
the words to describe it. It floats
along with such relaxing ease, and
corners like a dream. I have the basic
1.9 diesel with 71 bhp but yet is
doesnt feel underpowered, the steering
and gearchange are crisp and direct,
controls well laid out, very practical
car for my hard useage and generally
good to look at as well in gloss black
with a rear spolier. The controls are
well placed, and the whole interior is
logical too. I have yet to hear any
passenger complaints.

HOWEVER, reliability is appauling. In
less than 3000 miles i have had a blown
headgasket, broken doorlocks, faulty
alarm, blown heater matrix, broken
clock and a suspension collapse. Wether
this is down to a pathetic dealer or
poor longevity of the car i am still
not too sure. It is only sitting at
102K miles, which for a diesel is
nothing and only just run in compared
to the other Peugeot diesel engined
cars out family have owned.

Citroen Xantia Super Test

Hatchback and Estate
1.8 petrol, 1.9 diesel and 1.9 Turbo Diesel .

SX, LX and VSX
Arguably, Citroen are and always have been the most technically innovative production car maker in Europe - and possibly the world.

To their supporters they are idiosyncratic, other less charitable views perhaps describe them as odd. Citroen now seem to have found a way of actually selling some cars rather than just making oddball motors for Greenpeace-supporting hippies. Citroens of the past have always been weird and wonderful. Some have been styled to a Flash Gordon futuristic perfection (witness the DS,GS,CX and XM) that most manufactures dare not even try to achieve. Citroen have defiantly steered their own course, building some of the most technologically advanced cars ever to actually get on to the roads. Unfortunately, Citroen's new found popularity is based on cars which are not really Citroens at all, just more Eurobox-clothed, middle of the road engineering. The Xantia, together with the XM, may be the last of the real Citroens, for even though the Xantia hides it bustle under a very conservative outer skin, it is most definitely a Citroen in the real meaning of the word.

The Suspension
Let's get it over with!

If, by sheer ignorance or biased preconception, you simply can't live with the idea of Citroen's pumped hydropneumatic suspension, then you might as well give up reading this now and go and read about some other car.

Those of you who appreciate its benefits can skip to the next section.

For the undecided or the curious, Xantias come with 3 flavours of Citroen's unique suspension.

Standard Suspension
Constantly Pumped Hydropneumatic suspension - dispensing with conventional springs and dampers. Features include adjustable ride height and self levelling. This kind of suspension has made Citroens a favourite with the towing fraternity for many years. You can drop the suspension right down to make hitching-up easier and once started up, the car automatically self-levels, irrelevant of the rear weight. It's not only the caravan club that benefits from this suspension, the ride of the big Citroens is unmatched by any car. The sensation of flying along on a magic carpet is something which really has to be sampled before you can perceive how good it really is. In terms of flattening out Britain's crumbling roads, no other car can match a Citroen. Large potholes merely send a mild thump through the steering, while "sleeping policeman" (which seem to sprout up overnight in our neighbourhood) are normally fairly merciless to lesser cars and require serious speed reduction if you're not to launch the car into orbit, are dealt with with contemptuous ease. The down side to the sofa like ride has traditionally been copious amounts of body roll and an unnerving floatiness at motorway speeds. Well, the standard Xantia still rolls but not in the kind of disconcerting, lurching fashion that threatens to scrape the skin off your ears if you leave the window open. Sometimes, the outside front corner seems to dip a little on low speed cornering but that's more of a quirk which you adapt to very quickly. The severe floatiness that afflicted some earlier Citroens seems to have been cured - it never feels far away but it still never seems to happen. At speed, the Xantia merely glides along in a very serene unruffled fashion - no chance of getting sea sick in one of these then. Handling is never a problem, the steering is light yet positive and the car turns in sharply. The chassis seems to have plenty of grip and is only going to let go under the severest of provocation. If you're making your Xantia do this regularly then you've probably bought the wrong car in the first place, it's not built as a GTI, it's designed as sensible family transport and this is a job it does extremely well.

Switchable Suspension
Developed from the system first fitted to the XM, two extra spheres give larger capacity and with the aid of a computer or an over-ride switch, allow the use of two settings - "NORMAL" or "SPORTS" - to firm up the suspension when required. This is fitted to the top of the range VSX models.

Activa
Extra sensors, computers and other assorted trickery make the Xantia corner with little perceptible body roll.

Engines

1.8 Petrol 1.9 Diesel 1.9 Diesel Turbo

These three engines are distinctly different! Firstly, let's look at the normally aspirated Diesel engine. This motor does what you would expect - very little. In a car this big it really is a complete slug. While it is economical and bearable in traffic, as the speed rises its lack of power becomes more apparent - full throttle motoring just to keep up with traffic, leaves very little margin for safety. Discounting the slug motor, the other two units are far more closely matched and both have enough performance not to be embarrassed into sitting in the inside lane of the motorway. The petrol engine pumps out 103bhp @ 6000 rpm and 113 ft/lb torque @ 3000 rpm, the turbo diesel manages only 92 bhp @ a lowly 4000 rpm and 143 ft/lb. @ 2250 rpm. Whilst the headline BHP figures give the petrol a few mph extra top end and drives it a few tenths of a second quicker to 60 mph, the cost comes back with fuel economy - 20% more or worse. The figures only tell you what you would expect to see, what they don't tell you though is what the engines are like to drive. In simple terms, compared back to back, the turbo diesel feels relaxed and grunty and wafts along without too much effort. The petrol though is a different matter and to keep up with the 'oil burner' you have to wring its neck mercilessly. In the real world the 'smog causer' is the much nicer drive and is definitely the choice motor from this bunch. That's not to say that it's perfect mind, there is the suspicion that more heavily loaded, it may just be a tad underpowered, especially in estate form.

For the more power crazy there are also 6 other engine units to choose from

1.8 16valve
2.0 16 valve
2.0 Turbo
a rather over the top 3 litre V6
and an interesting sounding 2.1 turbo diesel now replaced by the 2.0 direct injection unit
Interior and Equipment

LX SX VSX

The Xantia is certainly a spacious car. It feels very wide and roomy, giving loads of shoulder room. The whole dashboard is rather flat and the layout only average. Most controls are fairly obvious, although there are a few oddities which I needed to look in the handbook to decipher - the remote radio controls built into the wheel are a nice touch though. The seats, for me at least, are a bit flat and wide, just not shaped enough to keep me comfortable on a long run. They are at least multi-adjustable so getting the right driving position is no problem. The heaters are excellent on all these cars with a nice outlet pipe on the transmission tunnel that gives a good supply of hot air without burning your feet like the systems in many other cars.

The LX comes with an electric sunroof and electric front windows as standard fare. The SX has electric/heated door mirrors, front fog lights and electric rear windows, while the VSX also has alloys and a leather rimmed steering wheel.

Whilst the VSX is the most desirable, you really couldn't complain about the equipment level of the SX. The LX however, is a bit tight fisted with the niceties and even the LX's that have aircon don't really match up to the SX's that don't.

Body choices

The Xantia is quite distinctive looking for a modern family car - different from all the other clones without being outrageous in any way. Both the hatchback and surprisingly, the estate are very easy on the eye. The car feels fairly big in hatchback form and this is probably more than enough for most of us but, for those of you who feel the need for a truly enormous load swallowing estate, then you can't go far wrong with the Xantia. Citroen have long produced some of the most practical estates and this is another example which won't disappoint. The hatch is one of the few in this market sector and the fifth door gives it an added dose of practicality which many other family saloons can't match. Colour is a major issue though - black, dark green or plum look very well indeed but the white and gold versions look terrible.

Everything has a downside
Actually there's not that much to complain about in a Xantia.

Except the pedals that is. I have real problems with the tightly spaced accelerator and brake pedal. Now, I may not be twinkle toes but size nine and a half is hardly excessive. In the end I resorted to careful choice of footwear before driving but it's a bit of a pain, long term. The brake pedal (when you can find it) can be a little difficult to modulate, leading to jerky, kangaroo style stopping. It did seem to vary car to car though so it may just be a service issue.

The gearbox is sometimes criticised for being overly stiff, but if we are being fair, while it is a little stiff, it is also very accurate and precise, with a nice mechanical feel.

So much choice
All things considered, I would probably choose a 1.9 TD VSX hatchback - although I wouldn't feel too short changed by the SX either.

With a choice of the full range, I would be very tempted by a Black 2.1 TD Exclusive Estate thanks very much!

...Oh and some very slim driving slippers.

Hmm, methinks I have bougtht a 'Lemon'!

1998 R reg 1.8 16v LX

Purchased in April 2003 with genuine 26,600 miles. Had not been used for the last year(!)

Good points:
1. Much nicer todrive than my previuous car, a 12yr old Ford Orion.

2. The famous suspension - the smoothest I have encountered in any car.

3. Air conditioning - great in the summer!

Bad Points:
1. Keypad Immobiliser is annoying.
2. Central locking on rear doors sticks.
3. Alarm goes off for no reason (annoying at 3am!)
4. That suspension! - rear spheres were leaking after 30,000 miles.
5. Brakes - cannot stop the squaling (after 3 visits to Citroesn main delaer)
6. core-pluig in cylinder head/block burst at 38,000 miles. Caused overheating (due to loss of coolant); misfiring (coolant leaked over ignition unit); and problems with engine management (unburnt fuel leaking onto lambda sensor in exhaust)

7. Since the problem with the core plug/ignition/oxygen sensor, the fueleconomy has worsened - now get 28mpg at best.

~In short, I've had more trouble with this car than the last 2 Fords I owned put together!

Won't be buying another one!
