I got my VTR in 2004 ( 2 years old ) I have to be honest and say that i NEVER had any problems with her AT ALL !! She was replaced this year and in the 4 years i had her all i ever had to replace/fix were the tyres and brakes. She never broke down EVER and fuel seemed to last FOREVER . My **** of a husband decided "i" needed an upgrade at the begining of this year and ive jumped from a VTR to a Nissan Navara !!! I HATE IT ! " I miss my wee saxo ( if your out there please come home) "
like the tardis, fitted me, 2 kids and 2 staffs comfortably .
causes whiplash sometimes taking off from traffic lights to speedy ( whoops ). Young lads want to race you thinking your a young thing !!
Apart from the leaking roof and trim issues it was mainly electrical problems with my Saxo VTS. Unfortunately for me I purchased a 3 year extended warranty from my dealer, but after 6 months the dealership collapsed along with my warranty. It was also underwritten by the parent company and as that also collapsed I lost everything with no compensation.
In the two years I owned the car I had the following problems
Water leaking though the roof light. Fuel gauge not working for nine months Airbag faulty and replaced Airbags wiring loom replaced Alternator replaced twice Dashboard replaced Lights intermittently failing Alarm problems Wiper failure Electric window problems - sticking, not responding. Interior carpets came unstuck in the front. Plastics on the steering column came lose and the glovebox broke. Various rattles but I thought these were just normal so never did anything about them. Car broke down 5 times
oh and as the spare wheel was located outside the car, that was stolen three times.
I have had a saxo VTR on 99T for two and half years, it is by far for the money one of the best hot hatches around. The car is four years old and the only thing that has ever neeeded replacing is two fronts tyres. I thrash mine everyday and it just seems to want more, i have a K+N and a janspeed stainless B/box and it easily does 0-60 in under 9secs i very rarely get beaten from the lights even against a VTS. I would recommend one to anybody if your after cheap fun, the only thing that is expensive is servicing costs. You would be better off doing the essentials yourself but i personally prefer the stamp in my book for selling value. I am considering changing it for a Clio Cup, but is it really worth it for a couple more seconds???? any comments?
Mine has had a full respray due to the bonnett and door not being matched to the rest of the car even though it hadnt been in an accident.
The clutch knocks when depressed and released when in gear.
The fan belt has come loose 3 times
citroen said the knocking was the gear box and they stripped it down and when they gave it me back they hadn't tight the gearbox mount up and if i hadnt gone back when i did i would have left it behind in the middle of the road.
The dash board rattles.
The front end is too light when cornering.
The brakes are POO and they dont last long.
the only decent thing is the fuel consumption. (48mpg on average)
But hey never mind its not citroens fault they are poo. why does everyone think they are so bloody cheap!
I've Had my VTR now for one year now since new and after owning a corsa SRI and a fiesta XR2 I can honestly say it beat the Pants of any other Hot hatch out there!!!
On a day to day basis its very reliable, cheap to own and very quiet even on the motorway!!
But its fun factor of the car which separates this for any other hot hatch out there. Its Nippy, Very Nippy and handles like a true sports car. Its also a car which appeals to everyone of all ages. At the age of 30 driving around in a XR2 you just look, well silly. With the saxo its just different.
Its a fantasic looking car and unlike most other new small cars out there its got real personality. There a huge fan base for this car as well with a great scene.
If your looking for somthing special under the £9000.00 you simple cant get a better looking, running, and most importantly driving experence out there!!!!!
I have no connection with Citroen other than having bought (including wife and daughter) several AXs and Saxos over the years. We have found them to be ever so reliable and excellent value for money. I use a basic 1 litre Saxo Mischief to drive 110 miles 5 days a week. It has 60,000 on the clock and drives comfortably at motorway speedlimits (and is rarely overtaken!) We have 3 Saxos on our drive - 2 bought from new. I changed from an S type Jag to my little Saxo while looking to buy another exec. car and will really miss it when it goes. Over 10 years and 5 cars I have found AX and Saxo to be excellent value and very reliable. I have found Citroen dealerships efficient and corteous - always getting a free courtesy car for services and minor repairs - with particular praise for Bollingmore's (again - no connection other than being a satisfied customer).
Saxo 1.1i is not a 'pocket rocket' but its done everything we've wanted and more. For the money it is great value

I have owned a Saxo 1.5 SX diesel for a year now and in that time have had an oil leak, brakes completely failing, dodgy electrical problems and self distructing trim. The fuel consumption is outstanding, performance is like a 1 litre car. It always starts first time but mechanically it fails too regularly. Annoying niggles are no remote boot release and don't go round a corner after it's rained with the window open or you will get a wet lap. Other cars deflect the rain away but not the saxo. Overall an ok car to be bought for economy only.

I got my saxo vtr on 3rd sept 01 from burton and deakin in orpington. the car was fine until 10.000 miles thats when the clutch burned out, citroen wanted £450.00 cash, they would'nt do it on waranty because they said it was my driving, i said to them that i wanted it to be investigated, it took them 3 days to tell my that the clutch had a loose spring which caused the clutch to burn out. i'm know at 15.000miles the car sometimes idles funny, and while driving at around 45-50 mph the engine management light lite up, so i slowed down and when i stopped the car stalled. it took about 30mins to start when it started the light was flashing, by this time i was a bit peeeed off with the car. so i gave it some through the gears then the light went out, ever since then the car flys.
Have a '97 1.1 Saxo for over a year now with 105,000 KM on the clock. Left hand drive so cheap to buy. Have replaced tyres, fan belt and exhaust will go soon but what a crackin' car. 200 miles per week and have carried nearly 0.5 of a ton of bathroom tiles in the back! - no problem - good value for money.

bought a second hand (prev owner dealer employee) vts 1.6i. it's run reasonably well for two years (apart from getting broken into because the alarm doesn't work).
the past 2 months everything has ghone wrong. exhaust has fallen off, manifold/cat gasket worn (causing high petrol consumption), alternator belt has failed and the clutch now needs replacing.
not recommended. performance is crap till 4,000 RPM, it squeaks, creaks, and i'm never buying another citroen.

Bought new in 2000, Forte 1.1. Has lived up to my expectations, very economical, lively and nippy around town. Engine is quiet, steering good. Minor niggles: three times back brake lights have fused. Seats could be better, noticeable after a long journey.
Owned for 4 years.
