Another kiwi. I own A 96 Legnum VR4, had it now for bout 1 year, had no realtrouble with this barring the oil pressure switch giving up the other day. Other than that this car is great, on the long trips it just cruises and the power on hand is just great, only real grip is that it's a tipronic and the gears are bit slow.

I am a UK owner of a 96 VR4. Had seen them about before but didnt know what they are like, but I do now!!!. Leaves most cars standing without trying. Replaced general parts at normal mitsubishi prices, but insurance is high (but to have fun costs!!!). Could drive it all day but for the mpg. Last thought now, if you want a car that can carry the kids and their bikes with the shopping, but will leave all hot hatches behind then a VR4 is the car for you and at a good price too ENJOY.

I have a '97 1.8L Legnum ST GDI. Running on nice 17's and removed the catalytic converter and gps. Handles like a dream, performance on the flat is nice, but on the hills you notices it's a 1.8. Where can I find internet sites about things to be done to this car?

Have had my 1997 VR4 for 6 months. Nothing has gone wrong, rattled, squeeeked or leaked. Was an import to UK. Had never heard of this car until I saw it in the line of cars at an import dealers in Bradford. A fairly understated interior (very japanese) but put together better than any of my previous cars. Quite a firm ride, as standard, so don't take your granny on a 200 mile round trip, she'll lose her teeth. Superb performance, it leaves most performance saloons in its wake, plus the practicality of an estate. What more could you want, apart from 50 MPG?....there's the downside, all that performance comes at a price. The dealer reckoned on 28-30 MPG from his own example. He must be driving like a monk since the best I have ever got is 27!. No complaints though, you pays your money and takes your choice, my average consumption is about 24MPG, but remember this is a 276BHP car! (although mine will be a bit higher with induction kit and SS exhaust). Insurance was a little difficult to pin down a good premium but after much research came across Osbourne & Sons (020 8388 6000) give them a try, my premium was Half what all the established 'specialist' insurers quoted. 34 yr old full no claims no accidents, 3 points (SP30) on licence £660 fully comp. They like Legnum VR4's apparently, very low claim, history on them. Anyway, forget the insurance, forget the fuel consumption, just get one of these cars and take it down your favourite back road. It's a lot heavier than your normal hot hatch, but just to savour those twin turbos kicking in is worth the money. All this in a useable package that's just as at home down at the DIY store with the seats folded down and full of timber. A particular bargain performance tool in the UK, mine cost £10K and had all the performance goodies on it already from its very kind japanese previous owner and only 32K on the clock, as verified by the full service history I got with the car (albeit in Japanese, it was decipherable with common sense). When you'd love an Audi RS6, but can't find the 48K to buy one, get one of these...yes, you're playing second fiddle to the German offering, but you're having the last laugh when it comes to smiles per £. The only performance estate within reach of mere mortals on a normal wage.

hey i'm in NZ, jap imports have taken off big time, brought myself a Mitsi Legnum STR auto 97 model in late 2001, lucky i brought a two year warranty with it, or i would be a very poor man, don't get me wrong the car looks great and goes well, i found this car, went and got it tested to see if anything was wrong the car, it got the big OK to buy, sweet, just a couple of things i would like to bring to
attention, it pays to give the car a good test drive, to get it warmed up,as i found after picking the car up and driving it home, about 30 k's away, i found it had a shudder, like u had a real bad front, this was about driving around 50-60 k's, found out it was a warn torque converter in trans, now that was a year ago, just last week a planet gear gave way, very bad lost power from trans, another trip to gear box people, they said it didn't help that i had different type of wheels on the front and back, they say it puts a bit of stain on the trans.
oh well a new set of tyres for xmas for me. well i hope this has put some light on owning a Legnum, but like i said nice car still.

Buy any Legnum between 96 and 98 this car will rock from standard to performance, drop it, give it the rims from hell its car to admire with it's natural boxy shape, My partner and I had to have one. traded a Subaru wagon have had no regrets. Well wicked worth the Lord Rutherford's ($100 bill). Although in saying that the interior had to go!, with the wooden panels, got rid off it, our panels our now blue which turns heads of other Legnum owners not braggin or anything haha..
Anyway anybody know where we can get clear tail light parts??? if so let me know.

I have the VR-4, and its great. I find it very comfortable, even on long trips ( 6 hours ) and its great for going skiing in the winter. It tows my boat well, although not like a large 4x4 would, but thats not why I bought it. Brakes are great, trans ( tiptronic ) is great, and the power is awesome, it will out accelerate an EVO 3 from 100 - 200. It is a very reassuring car in the rain also. The only problem I have had with it is a cracked HT lead, although replacing that was a major, as the intake manifold required removal.

Great car but one MAJOR flaw: the
driving position and comfort. The seats
are NOT comfortable and my accelerator
leg goes numb quite quickly. Also the
pedals are not in the right place (I am
5 feet 8 inches tall)so its impossible
to get really comfortable. Comfort is
thus far below what I've got used to
from much cheaper European cars like
GMs or Ford. Problem cannot be
corrected.
