Owned for 10 years or so and build from ground up after I purchased it as a dead Italian import spares bike. That task was easy following the manuals and i'm certainly no mechanic. Collossal improvement in all ways over my previous bikes, handling, speed, comfort etc (and I'm well over 6'). Excellent two-up. Mainly used for 30mile commute originally, at which it excelled through heavy traffic, now has become more of a leisure toy, but I wouldn't be without it. Home maintenance is easy and the Owners Club (GPZ900R.co.uk) is excellent in all aspects, including technical advice, spares and socialising. Tours and scratches equally well and you're unlikely to miss the top end in comparison with modern bikes, unless on a racetrack. 150mph on A roads should be more than enough for most folk :o) As long as you deal with routine servicing requiremets (EASY) it won't let you down.
Buy one, restore it, ride it - and still have change from £2,000. Excellent!
BIG RED COMFY FAST
DIFFICULT TO KEEP CLEAN AS I'M ALWAYS USING IT
Reviewing a 1984 model.
nearly standard
Owned for more than 5 years.
Had an original A1 1984 for over 5 years. Off the road now due to a cooling problem, but better on M ways than the ZX9R that replaced it. Owners club the most useful I have ever been a member of, parts/advice in his catalogue is good.
Excellent spares availability from the Owners Club, cheap insurance. Comfortable for rider & pillion.
Early ones with 16" front ends with anti dive can handle a bit strangely. worth FA s/h!

What a bike, twenty years old and can still cut the mustard with a good rider aboard. Currently own 2 1984 a1s and the longer i have them the more impressed i am. No wonder they are a classic, in the true sense of the word. The only thing to watch is that to put 115bhp through that small section back tyre, you must know what you are doing. Buy one and melt the horizon!.
I bought my GPZ last year and it is fantastic, unfortunately it needs quite a bit of work done to it and I cant afford to do it so I'm going to get rid of it and get something smaller but I would recomend anyone wanting a quick cheap bike to buy one.
Gave up my BSA A10 for marriage and kids, 20 years ago. Recently I bought a home build GPz900r Lowrider. It's another marriage. This baby looks good and sounds even better. I rode it home for over 200 miles and loved every minute of it. Can anyone give me the GPz owners club link. I am certain that with a bit more work you'll see it on Backstreet Hero's.
Looking to get back into bikes, born again scenario I suppose, bought 1984 A1 cheap & never looked back! Heavy, far to heavy, junked just about everything possible; centre stand, original exhaust, air box, sidestand switch, inner fairing, indicators, radiator fan (never worked properly anyway) etc etc. fitted Skidmarx twin headlamp fairing, wiseco pistons, kent cams, dyno jets, hagon fork springs, K & N individual filters, Micron stainless exhaust with Titanium can, ZZR1100 rear shock, ZZR600 rear end, Brembo discs, flip screen..... shaved 50lbs off weight & now even quicker!! Aquitted itself very well on track days (before mods) & has been mostly reliable. Weakness is fuel tap & gathering water in #1 spark plug recess, water runs in here when parked on sidestand when raining! GET one, so much fun for so little dosh!
oh god what a babe! ive tried alsorts but this thing just keeps on going and keeping me happy. got a gsxr 400 in the shed for loon moments but it tends to stay there cos old a7 does the stuff. get one, keep one and she will last longer than ya wife wif shit loads of happiness!!!
I now own an original A1 in Red/Graphite GPZ900R, the bike I lusted over as a spotty youth. I've owned two others, sold them, got modern stuff (Blades Etc) and got bored. Ok the design is close on 20 yeas old and in the power and handling departments this sometimes shows, but in real world conditions these failings are hardly noticable. If it's attention you seek then a decently turned out 9 will get it. I regularly go to bike meets with a few friends on the latest GSXRs and R1s and the 9 always gets the comments.
Insurance is dirt cheap, the earlier models qualifying for classic prices, which are very good :o) They are a compitent tourer, I've done several trips to Europe, with only the usual pre trip maintenance you'd expect on something more modern. If you are into the Owners club scene there's a very good 9 club, plus a very active mailing list on YahooGroups.
Should you buy one? Of course. If you were a spotty teenager on a battered Superdream who looked in the local Kawasaki showroom and dreamed, go for it own one, you know your life won't be complete till you do. If you're in your early twenties and insurance and running costs of a modern sports bike make it impossible, try a 9, you can get then at very reasonable prices now. And the high disposable income crowd, get one as an investment, not ownly are you buying a piece of biking history, you're getting a bike that can be a nice change from you're usual mount, plus keep it in good condition and it'll only gain in value.
Outstanding machine... Considering it's been in production for so many years, I think it's obvious that the 900R is a real winner. Plus there's the spares support from the owners club... What a bike!

Bought an original A1 for £1700 about 3 years back, as my Laverda Mirage aint the ideal day to day bike. Its 'kin' brilliant, & gives the riders of more modern bikes a shock every now and then. xlent owners club, join it & you'll save the membership cost the 1st time you buy spares or take advice.

I owned an older one for several years. When I bought it the clock showed a bit more than 10.000kms, and when I sold it this was 60.000kms. I loved this bike because it was very fast, reliable and long-tourer. Very good price/value ratio.
i live in northern australia, which is all year bike weather.travel to and from work clocks up big miles and trips with the wife add more to te total.we bought a gpz 900 in 1997 with 78000 klms on the clock, and parked it in the year 2000,with 113000 klms.some dirt bikes and a trx 850 followed, but we could no longer travel much more than160 klms away without severe arsepain, even both sharing the controls.we sold our trx and just got the gpz on the road again, what a tank. that was my first impression, but i know how trustworthy the old girl is,and it is surprising how well she handles, with so much weight.the motor seems to rev so slowly, but it builds speed very quickly, and stable.i went for a ride with my friend on his st2 ducati, and in the mountains i was surprised how easily the gpz left him behind, weird.it feals slow, but cant be. the wife is happy too.
