Owned a zx from new '93. 217K miles and engine as sweet as a nut. Rust in bulkhead meant retirement to the breakers. Brilliant drive from start to finish.

Citroen ZX TD VOLCANE M-Reg
This is an update on my review of December 2003. I sold the car this month (March 2005) with a heavy heart. The only reason I let it go was that I needed air conditioning for the summer. The cost of retro-fitting aircon was prohibitive. It continued to give sterling performance and mpg on my motorway commute. Stock speakers x4 are decent enough and the previous owner had upgraded the hifi with a Kenwood head unit.
I fitted 16 inch alloys early last year and they made it look incredible. Roadholding improved but with slightly harsher ride. Did you know the car has passive rear steering. For a budget hatch I got more than my money's worth out of it. For a replacement I considered the Xsara but it just doesn't have the same magic. If you are still hesitant about getting a Volcane TD, stop stalling and just do it!
I now have an Audi A4 tdi Avant 110. Lots of go and good economy. Reviews to come. Watch this space.

I am on my third ZX since they started, so I suppose I like them. Here is why. They are practical and, I find, spaceious for a relatively small car. I have found them very reliable and certainly economical to run. I do not think they are all that ugly, but many of the cars petrol heads drool over look vile to me. ZX is a good drive, though I would welcome a better seat. I like the way it corners and I especially like the welly you get from the turbodiesel (forgot to mention I only have time for diesels). I think it is a pity they were dropped rather than being improved. Modern car designers could learn a lot from studying it, especially about visibility for the driver which is dire on most fashionable offerings these days. If your car is what gets you efficiently from A to B, ZX is a great deal, if it is an extension of your ego, look elsewhere.

Bought a 1.9D Elation estate in November 2001 and have just sold it on for a Xsara estate. Averaged 47.6mpg over 36000 miles with no faults, breakdowns or reliability problems at any time other than routine servicing. Getting dated in some respects but the value for money (economy, reliability, insurance....) can't be faulted and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a decent one to anybody.

I like the reliability, design and practicality. I have never seen a Citroen ZX until I owned one. Actually impressive, I bought a used 92 ZX Avantage, 1.4 gasoline, 5 speed with 153K km's for $1,800.00. We do not have Citroens in US. Based on my ownership experience, I like the features of covered stereo face, ease of maintenance, sliding rear seats, rear sunshield and overall ergonomics design. The problems I encountered since I owned them is the power door locks that works on their own. For the price that I paid for with cold a/c, power windows, new battery, carb, tires is a great bargain for a "Rota beater" I currently logged 14,000 km's.

I have a 1.9 diesel (non turbo) and well I'm in love with an ugly car (lets face it you don't buy one for its looks do you). I get between 50-60 mpg and considering its a diesel and non turbo at that i still suprise a couple of boy racers. Its covered 120,000 miles (40,000 miles of my own doing) and apart from new cam belt and home servicing costs (filters, bake pads, etc) I have not spent anything on it since last year when i brought it. However i do have a few nigles, which have occured mainly cause I'm a cheapskate and brought a basic reflex model (i needed a car fast and this was the only one i found that wasn't high mileage or clocked) so the soft seats kill your back on long journeys, no electric windows or sunroof means a hot start to summer journeys unless you go round the car and winding down all the windows manually, and no central locking (I have a 5 door) means climbing all over the car and removing key from ignition to open boot. Well looking on the positive side at least i havent got any electrics to go wrong! I have looked at then xsara but seems to have far too many problems so when this car finally dies i will replace it with a newer zx but this time i will get a volcane model (loads of extras).

These things are almost completely unheard of. Which is great if you want one. A handfull of loose change can get you a fine example with 50k on it's clock, and parts availability is superb, thanks to Euro Car Parts and GSF. Comfy seats if you can blag a special edition such as the elation (Which has sports seats, a lá Volcane), spirited go from even the small engines. (1.4i is economical and sprightly enough to keep you amused).
And you can pick them up in good nick for about £500! Coola!

Citroen ZX TD VOLCANE M-Reg
I have had my volcane for about 5 months and have done about 8,500 miles.
I fitted a K&N air filter soon after purchase and a stainless steel back box 2000 miles ago (it works).I had previously owned another ZX TD Aura and a 309 TD so I am impressed with its performance. Its mid range pull is impressive and it is composed at speed. I bought it mainly for economy on a budget as I also own other performance cars.
I get 425 miles from a full tank with demanding motorway driving though I'd like to get a bit more out of it. It has been reliable so far though the throttle cable snapped 6000 miles ago. The service history indicated that this has happened twice before!!
I intend to run it for as long as I have to do my daily motorway commute. I have changed the brakes all round and had an oil change & MOT 3500 miles ago.
By February 2004 it will have done 92000 miles when it will be due for another oil change and 2nd cambelt change.(1st one at 49000 miles).
I intend to try the new BP Ultimate diesel to see if there are any performance advantages as super unleaded works better on my MR2 Turbo.
I like its unassuming nature, suspension and roadholding, economy and willingness to perform. It is truly amazing at motorway speeds - feels like a hot hatch...and I drive it like one!!!

Have just purchased a citroen zx 1.9D estate Elation. Very happy with it. Brought it as a run around car for two weeks after previous one blew up and I love it! Im only 17, but the estate carrys all three of my bikes with no effort. Acceleration on the mway isnt the best, but I get 53mpg from it, so im not complaining. Only thing I have found not to like yet, standard cassette stereo and rear leg room, as im 6ft 2, the poor people in the back dont get much room!

I say well worth the money, im even getting alloys for it and have transfered my plate onto it, stuff buying a fiesta!!!!

My ZX Volcane turbo diesel is easily the best car I've owned (of ten in total), and one of the best I've driven (of about forty). Good performance, with great wads of torque giving excellent overtaking ability and making the task of joining motorways a doddle with its rapid pickup. It's so easy to pick your gap in the traffic and just go for it, and regaining cruising speed after being slowed by other traffic is quick and effortless.
The comfortable ride is very commendable in view of the excellent roadholding and handling - its suspension modifications relative to the rest of the ZX models really do work, and this car is very responsive to steering wheel inputs, cornering accurately and relatively flat. The all-disc brakes (ventilated on the front) are really powerful, with a good, progressive feel. Reassuring is the word here.
Accommodation is good, with comfortable seating; the driver's seat has five separate adjustments (reach, rake, height, lumbar, and side bolster), and the steering wheel height is adjustable. You CAN find your perfect driving position.......
It's been a very practical workhorse and has carried some very large loads - this has often been helped by the ability to easily slide the whole rear seat forwards by about nine inches, if needed, so that rear passengers can still be carried.(naturally, it also has the usual split/folding property).
Reliability has been good, and fuel consumption is usually in the 40-45 mpg bracket.
Niggles ? - slightly flimsy build in parts, and I'd prefer two wiper blades rather than the large single one fitted.
But they are just niggles - after 60,000 rapid and comfortable miles, driving this car still puts a smile on my face ! Incidentally, during my ownership, I borrowed a top-of the-range Xsara turbo diesel, the ZX's natural successor, whilst mine was being serviced. Driving it was a disappointing, uninvolving experience, and showed me even more what a good car the ZX Volcane is. I was glad to have it back.

Petrol engine overheating and or misfiring? Check the MAP sensor. (£45 in Italy £60 in Germany £90 in England).
Citroen deny it's a design fault but it's not what the man I spoke to said.
And a freind had the same problem with the Xsara.

Have had two ZX's now. The first was a 1.4i Pzazz which was quite a spitited little car, but quite flimsy feeling. Just a month ago I bought a '97 ZX 16V which is in a different league altogether! Very fast, body feels very strong and holds the road like glue!
I love this car. Too soon to evaluate reliability, but the Pzazz wasn't too bad so I'm expecting a reasonable level.
Ive tried the Xzara coupe but it doesn't have the 'Rally car' feel that the ZX 16V has.
I would recommend it, for all the above, plus a degree of exclusivity also!

Got a ZX after my first car (Austin Metro) died. Managed to get hold of a 1.6i Aura, which as well as being rapid is stuffed with electrics. Only problem was the gear linkage went, the RAC fixed that at roadside in around 15 minutes. Besides that it's nice to have a car few others i know own, and the fact i can burn off those gits with the vauxhall nova's makes it even better. I like this car!

I've owned my Citroen ZX TD Volcane since new. This was in August '93, since then I have covered 160,000 miles. It's had a very hard life with the way I drive, but I cannot fault this car. I've only had a couple a minor problems but by knowing the right people I've managed to keep the costs down. Performance is excellent, bearing in mind at the end of the day it's an economical diesel. The handling is very good (even though I eventually changed the wheel size & lowered the vehicle). As I have done so much mileage and the resale value is very poor I know I will keep it until the car gives up and dies. Hopefully this will be in many year to come.

My dad owned a ZX 1.9 TD Estate from his company scobies. I think that people underestimate this unloved car.
So what if it's noisy?! It's an old diesel car I really like them apart from the tim it conked out after a holiday (prabably knackered after about 24 hrs driving!) If you object please E- mail me at [Log in to view email]

Lovely car, a pleasure to drive. Parts
not exactly cheap but no problems
getting hold of them. TD engine is
great, loads of torque for overtaking
but needs proper servicing every 6000
miles to keep running smooth. Cam belt
should be changed at 50k and not 72k as
shown in the service book. Excellent
mpg - as good as 1.1 Fiesta I owned
previously.
Interior not inspiring but you will
forgive it when you drive the car.
Standard fit stereo excellent, slight
problem with slow electric window.
Bodywork picks up dents very easily so
beware.
1.9 TD SX commands high insurance
premium but I'm not sure why. In
general more expensive to run than a
mainstream motor but definitely worth
it for the engine, ride, handling and
exclusivity!

Citroen ZX Dimension Diesel Estate

Having previously supplied me with a ZX Turbo Diesel and read what I thought of it, some wit decided that the thing may grow on me given more time, and hence palmed me off with the plain old diesel version.

I'm not going to go over old ground and repeat what I said in the previous test - those who are interested can read the ZX Turbo Diesel Estate test

Instead, I will concentrate on the differences - ie the engine.

I use the term engine only loosely here, as this was one of the slowest cars I have driven for a long long time. It's probably the only modern car I've driven where cruising down the motorway requires a constant foot against the floor. Okay so down hill it will run on to 85 and probably more given a big enough hill. But inclines without a run up can cut speed down to 60 tops and should you somehow find slightly slower moving traffic, say 65 in the outside lane when your doing 70, then by the time you've taken your foot off the throttle then re-engaged it to modulate your speed, your invariably down to 55-60 and the now 100yard and widening gap is being filled by all the traffic from your left.

This really is a frustrating engine to power a car with. I have a certain amount of inbuilt mechanical sympathy and dislike constantly driving with my foot wedged hard to the floor. But this car is so slow they may as well remove the accelerator and replace it with an on/off switch.

The upside is of course massive fuel economy - around 49 to the gallon in mixed driving. If you're never in a hurry then you probably couldn't do much better.

So to whosoever I upset so much that they took their revenge by sentencing me to purgatory in this snail, I apologise unreservedly, I've learnt my lesson. Please, please, please - parole me now before I go totally insane.
