Again (after a major top engine rebuild-new cam chain) the bike is rattling due to cam chain tensioner failure (the last damn thing lasted for 1500 kms approx) ... Now I read 38000 (plus) kms on the clock .. Be careful !! The engine seems to deteriorate after running these kms (not that many to my opinion) and I keep servicing it very thoroughly ..

Very much interested about Steve's solution to the problem... Is it possible to hand me some more details about that XJ 550 tensioner? Is it still doing well and from how many kms until fitting it on the engine? Is the retrofit trouble free doing it? do I have to drill holes to the cylinder body for example? Exchange e mails?

Need some more info before starting spending money again. The Yamaha dealer in Greece (excellent compared to the husky one) offers me a complete CCT XJ one for about 50 euros !!

Thanks A LOT friend for the info... Need to keep this bike running

If you love big singles as i do you will love the te610e its smooth and mellow down low and wind the throttle it will awaken and rev with six speeds, awesome! But there are some issues, mine is a 98 with electric start only, it turns over too slowly, you have to give three squirts with the accelerator pump no throttle when cold in summer, and in winter full choke no accelerator pump no throttle it will always start, then strait onto half choke.Trouble is it cranks for too long, my bike has only travelled 13000ks but the start drive train has done 100,000ks of work and has wear, still grips though. The next gripe is the CAMCHAIN NOISE! you will never fix the loose cam chain because the factory tenstioner is rubbsih! It has a clock spring to force the plunger onto the camchain blade with a threaded shaft to stop it retreating but it only offers 700 grams force! and thats the spring wound tight, pathetic! Husqvarna. I retro fitted a yamaha xj 550 tenstioner, its a plunger with two coil springs up the middle and rachet so it cant retreat with 2kilos force! It works a treat, a good ride to heat the blade into shape and the noise is gone.

I OWN AN EX DARRYL KING 1998 TC 610. I HAVE REBUILT THE BIKE FROM GROUND UP AND HAVE SPENT $3500 ON THE ENGINE WITH A FULL RACE CAM, PORT AND POLISH, STAINLESS VALVES ECT. IT KNOW MAKES MASSIVE TORQUE AND HORSEPOWER OVER STOCK. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY DRAMMA'S WITH THIS BIKE APART FROM TRYING TO HANG ON TO THE BLOODY THING. 250 TWO STROKES AND 450'S HAVE NO CHANCE, THEY JUST CAN'T KEEP UP. I JUMP AND RIDE WITH THE MOTOCROSS BOYS EASILY CLEARING 80 FOOT TABLE TOPS AND DECENT DOUBLES. PERSONAL PREFFERENCE HUSKY, NOTHING COMES CLOSE, BEST DIRT BIKES IN THE WORLD.

BIG BORE, BIG GRUNT, LIGHT WIEGHT, VERY SEXY LOOKING MACHINE.

About my Husqvarna TE 610 LT '99

At 24000 km still have some reliability problems with the cam chain tensioner mainly... Mechanic says he fixed it twice under warranty. This will be the third time now and I am most concerned about the lack of a technical solution to this problem, if any....

Anyone knows about a technical solution to this problem, issued by the factory or any mechanic?

Otherwise, I still love to ride my Husky a LOT... not bored of it after two years of living together (this happened with all my previous single cylinder bikes) .. Impressed by overall performance, sad about reliability and lack of technical support...

I just bought this bike after two years on a yamaha 535 virago, and its turned me into a bloody holigan. Its so much fun ,overtaking used to be a cautious affair. Now i can safely overtake while putting the fear of god into them dam micra drivers, that exhaust note sounds like an f1 car,and those are standard pipes too.
still getting used to starting it ,i'm sure its just me being a knob, but once warm no problems. Its a 2000 model and the previous owner did have some smalloil leaks, other than a crap side stand its a ****ing cool bike.

610 TE: have had starting difficulties, but seem to be getting there after tinkering with carb. Have ridden CCM 640 and R30. Husky is faster, sharper all round. Excellent bike for anything but long runs.

It’s a sunny Saturday morning and you roll out onto the track for a day of tyre-shredding action in the company of Supersports machines of all shapes and sizes on the twisty Kent track of Lydden. You become very unpopular, stuffing CBR6’s, FZRs, VFR400s and Gullarms, on the brakes and on sheer corner speed. You return home that evening, right footpeg grazed and tyres fluffy, you are most pleased.

Sunday dawns and you spend twenty minutes in the garage, swapping 17" sticky-shod Supermotard wheels for the standard equipment 21" and 18" knobblies. The rest of the day is spent exploring local green lanes and trails in the sunshine – knowing you have plenty of grunt to tackle the steepest of climbs. Back home that evening you slot the 17" wheels back in and retire the knobblies to the shed.

The usual Monday morning dread is replaced with excitement and anticipation. The 15-mile slog to work on the M40 has been transformed into a 20 minute Grand Prix of Buckinghamshire via every tight and twisty B-road you can find. You arrive at work with a grin that meets round the back of your head, no amount of stress that the 9 – 5 throws at you will shift that.

Can these three days of pleasure be for real? All without breaking the 100mph barrier? Oh yes.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present the Husqvarna TE610E.

I bought the Husky about a month ago, and what a frantic month that has been! A mixed bag really, half of it spent in the garage fixing the thing, the other half spent out trying to break it! I have found myself using the Husky whenever possible (including a 140 mile trip round the M25!!), two trackdays, one at Lydden (probably the slowest UK circuit) and one at Thruxton (definitely the fastest UK circuit) no prizes for guessing which one was more suitable for the Husky with it's 100mph top speed....

Anyone who lacks track day confidence ought to get one of these. I always had a fear of overtaking on the track but now it's simple - wait for your 'prey' to brake, count to three, brake and squirt - braaaaaaaarp!!! and (like Haga) you're gone...

This bike started life as an enduro spec 610, I even got the standard wheels and tyres in the deal complete with another set of discs for a quick swap over. The guy who owned it before has fitted Talon hubs laced to Excel alloy rims, but as it was an enduro model it still has the small front disc and a 2-pot caliper instead of the big 4-pot. This is one of the next things to modify on my list of Husk-jobs; I must talk nicely to the man from Brembo to acquire the 320mm floating disc and 4-pot stopper. Husqvarna do produce a production Supermotard version of the TE610E ("E" meaning Electric start!), but these have only been around for a couple of years and seem to be holding very good money. A new one will set you back £5,400 OTR, which is still cheaper than paying £5,200 for a new enduro version and doing the wheels and tyres yourself (around £800) like the previous owner of this one did.

So far I have experienced two oil leaks (the bike has only done 2,000km!) one was from the cam cover and the other (which we've yet to solve) is from the neutral light switch....it's only a little drip, but annoying all the same, leaving a 50p sized puddle every morning on the garage floor. I have also had various little bits rattle loose and fall off - but that's to be expected from something that is a) Italian and b) inclined to vibrate more than a.... (Use your imagination)

Things that I've had to remove for aesthetic and weight saving reasons include: The "large but functional" rack/grab rail, pillion pegs, most of the front and rear mudguards (but the pics don't show this) and anything else I could find that didn't need to be there. The removal of half of the front mudguard has got rid of the worrying high speed weave I had noticed on the track at anything over 90mph, and the bike feels a lot more planted in high speed corners (and there are a few of these at Thruxton).

On the road with the 610 Supermoto you are nice and high up, it’s much better for seeing and being seen as you are a good 12-14 inches higher than if crouched over the tank of a race-rep. Also you can experience the summer breeze under your armpits (without having to ride a chopper).

Despite the minor niggles, the Husqvarna 610 is one hell of a bike. Because of its light weight and narrow profile, you can change direction as quick as any Supersports 400, my previous track bike was a NC30 but there’s no way I would go back. The 610 has plenty of grunt, having had mine on the dyno I can tell you it’s making 43bhp at the back wheel (at 7,250rpm) and 35 ft/lb of torque (at 5,750rpm). Small figures maybe, but this bike is fully road legal, with twin catalytic converters, I’m sure binning those and throwing some motocross parts at the engine may get slightly nearer to the magical 70bhp that the proper Supermotard racers (the likes of Chambon) are supposed to have achieved.

Some time ago in a magazine (Bike I think it was) a Husqvarna 610 was quoted to have been as fast as a Blade up to 80mph - there’s something to bark about.

My TE610 has been highly tuned and reliability is still good. These bikes just seems to want to pull both your arm's off and beat you across the head with them.Seems like there's no end to the power when the throttle is rolled on.loads of fun to ride on & off road.
Love it!!!

my 2000 TE610 is totally standard, and whilst i could now do with more power it has (touch wood) been v.reliable. However, after 12000km it has developed a cam chain tensioner problem and so knocks. Easily rectifiable so i'm told and which i'm having fixed in a couple of weeks. A great bike. I've got Avon Azaro on the back and Avon Pro-extreme on the front ... and they have changed the bike! fantastic. Julian Alders

Own a TE610 LT (1999 model bought it new less than two years ago).... Great bike on the road seems to be poor on reliability... Just today (17500 km) on a traffic light, the engine started rattling really bad ... The mechanic says it must be the cam chain tensioner .... bliah ... Left her there and took the bus.... Other than that, except of some minor (and a major) oil leak seems reliable ...(haha, one can say. Anyone out there with the same problems?

Anyway ... I miss my husky a lot (10 hours after I left it to the mechanic)so it seems that I LOVE this bike ...

Thinking of trading her back for a new husky TE 2003 model.

I have a 1998 te 610. I got it new and it has served me well. It goes like a rocket and it's very reliable, and starts every time despite being worked hard for 5 years now. The secret is frequent oil changes using good quality oil and keeping the air filter nice and clean.
I will be getting another Husky te 570 (the "new" name) for sure or wait and see what the new awaited te 450 is like. Husqvarna make great reliable bikes.
