In need of an additional vehicle to use to transport goods for my business as well as use being used as a car, i looked at all the options, having owned large expensive 4x4's in the past and loving them, for economy i decided that an Explorer was the way to go. After reading all the bad press, i decided to make my own mind up, all i can say is its a really good car, lots of toys, everything electric, compass, outside temp, self levelling suspesion (no clock though, very strange) the cheepest 4x4 youll find in the UK, mines LPG converted 400 mile to £42 gas. Loads of space, plus what most 4x4's lack power, 0-60 10.5 seconds, bullet proof engine if maintained mine does 2000 rpm at 70mph so its not working hard. its not trying to be anything but a ford. They are sold like mondeos in the states in large numbers so there as here risiduals are low. If your reading this review, you either have one, or are thinking of buying one. Mondeo or Explorer £ for £ pretty clear cut i'd say.
Good Points: Fast, Smooth, Good In The Wet, Good Off Road, Comfortable For Up To 5 Passengers Of Any Age, Large Boot, Lots Of "Toys". Bad Points: Thirsty, Susceptible to Cross Winds, No Clock
If you buy one get it converted to LPG, mine averages 36mpg (at the equivalent cost of unleaded petrol) & thats a whole lot of car for that mpg!
Explorer 4.0 V6 Its a bit thirsty and doesn't handle around corners well at all. But for cruising in comfort its great. Off road, its a good as anything in this price range, the deserts of the Middle East prove no problem at all. I have no problems keeping up with Prado, Discovery, Galloper (don't ask), Land Cruiser etc, even when the going gets very tough. Would I buy one again, at this price....yes
