They're great cars, I've owned many XJ40's over the years including the amazingly smooth and fast V12 6.0L, a real gentlemans express. I have never suffered mechanical breakdown,you'd be very unlucky if you did, electrical problems yes, on early cars it is a problem-but the VCM is often to blame, bad solder joints throw up faults that dont exist so check first (post 89 cars are usually fine). The only faults my current car (1994 XJR ) has is a broken outer door handle,very common and easy fix, and the AC packed up recently,no surprise there..it still drives beautifully with 157000mls under its tyres and is practically rust free. all for under £1500 ! it was the thick end of £50k new!

excellent value,under £1500 can get you a really nice one,economical,looks good on the drive.
some bodged up shunters out there,beware.
