Yep...I've got one...and I reckon it's a-ok! 1983 vintage. Looks cool with it's alloy billet-style wheels and neat styling. Feels really good to ride and sounds even better! Accurate handling, easy controls (pretty standard stuff these days, though,) fuss-free starting (every day) and brilliant accelleration make VT250's a joy to own. This one has done some serious mileage - I bought it from my cousin who had just ridden it for well over 1500 interstate kms in two days (yeah...INTERSTATE on a 250!) I have no complaints - bar some tiny, weeny little nigglies (anyone who complains about little niggles in a bike this age is clearly not being reasonable) I'ts got a new chain and sprockets - to ride it you'd think it was near new - and that's all I've done thus far. BUY ONE!
I have a '89 VTF 250. Great little bike. I've had some front end work done and work on the rear shocks. But, what can you expect for such an old bike. Parts are hard to come by. I had to order a new mirror from this dude in New Zealand. I'm having some high performance pipes put on it and planning to get a custom paint job after the first of the year. Love the bike. Lot's of fun around the city.
I got given one for a project with low milage and was sitting at a side of a house for 2 yrs.I got the beast going and down the road at breakneck speed (awsome )now it does not spark at all I checked the coils and cleaned them up, still no spark- does anybody have ideas to this problem?
Dear oh dear, this must be the VT fan page because my experience was rather different, "never again" was my opinion. When they're good they're really good fun, when they go wrong forget it. Mine was remarkably quick off the line for such a little bike but was out of steam realistically by 90mph. Top speed around 95mph. Horrible to work on (I mean REALLY horrible to work on), very few people make parts as they never did sell in big numbers. Try getting parts from a breakers even 5 years ago and you were generally wasting your time. My advice is get the lowest mileage best condition and buy replacement shock from a specialist in the back of MCN - it'll still be WAY cheaper than the Honda part.
Problems: vicious parts situation. monstrous to work on.
Good points: light and nippy. handsome little bike.
Advice: If you've got one rev it - it's fun. Buy an LC instead. If it goes wrong don't waste your time on it.
I have 2 of them and they have a lot of differences. The first i got had a fine motor (maybe it was a "blue" one) with great perfomance.I even saw 200km/h top speed with this bike and i could keep up with fzr 400 or wr250.Of course handling sucks .I did over 68.000km with this vtf before i destroy a couple of valves when tried to overcame a fzr 400 at 14000rpm and a second passage behind me..... the seecond one its the oppossite.Notso much power better torgue top speed about 160km/h but i have made over 100.000km (the counter reset last month)and i have made a service at 48.000km, i had changed only 2 time front brake and 1 time rear break.
The only bad thing that i can think of are 2 things: 1, the cameshafts make a lot of noise until they warm up because they are loose 2, the rear suspension is too weak and it has to be changed at least every 40.000km. Great value for (few) money!!
I've got 2 FD models. I wore out the big ends on one, but that was doing 107mph on a 37000 mile engine! I recently had it rebuilt with CBR600 pistons (292cc)and bigger valves by SEP.It cost a fortune so it better work! As long as you look after them they go for ages.
the vt250 is good value for money today i had one in 1990 great fun.40+mpg.anybody want to buy a vf400f in very good condition good running order new tyres brake pads fork seales 4into1 fullservis give me a ring 01685388582 ok.
I've bought three of them and love them. I have taken one from the UK, through France and across the Pyrenees into and around Spain, another I used as a commuter in central London rush hour traffic and gave another to my girlfriend as a first bike. They were great for all these uses - particularly because they are so cheap to buy (around £400), run, tax and insure relative to other bigger bikes. You get a lot for little money and they are tough and reasonably reliable as well as looking good. However, beware if they go wrong as they are complex and parts are hard to find and expensive - there is no Haynes manual either. I reckon they are the best kept secret of budget biking.
I've had this bike for a while, dream to ride and if like me will look forward to going for a thrash. It's not a sports performance bit it will keep up with fewer disadvatages of expesive parts and hard seats.

What a great little bike. Mine was an 84 model which I owned about 10 years ago.
After a year on a 125 superdream and five days on an X200 which was so horrible I took it back to the shop, the VT250 was fantastic. It was quick, excellent handling, and even now I think of it fondly.
In the end it's complexity was it's downfall, but the GPZ500 that I replaced it with wasn't anything like as good (faster but not such a good ride).

Very nice when it worked, smooth powerful engine, nippy handling, mostly good quality. But engine design makes servicing or repairs a lengthy nightmare, parts are extremely expensive. 16" front wheel with enclosed disc brake a bit hmmmm. Good if you got a new one I suppose but in the end it was no where near as fun as the slower CB250RS which handled well and was a piece of piss to look after. Lots of plastic and horribly complex for a 250.
