I had my diesel Peugeot from 2nd hand for 7 years and she n'er gave any trouble. Good little runner, excellent fuel consumption and parts seemed to get hold of. She didn't like pure biodiesel, which softened the rubber parts in the engine system, but that is a minor point. She finally failed on the back axle just as her predecessor, a 205 did. I could have obtained another axel from the scrap yard, but decided to go for a slightly bigger model so that I could fit my bicycle inside

Excellent fuel consumpton, no major problems, just the usual ageing of parts.
Failed on the back axle; biodiesel softened plastic engine components

dont bloody buy one!
Unless ofcourse.
you like the brakes to blow on you and fly into walls,
you like the steering mis lodging and almost killing you.
or you like to get to 0 - 60 in 10 seconds, without being able to stop.
or if you like it rolling down a hill coz the handbrake was muffed.

other than all the things that go wrong with the 106, i think the best thing about it is the wiper blade motors... they still work.

seriously tho, i have a highly modded, 106
and all they do is brake
ive spent too much on it.
its pants.

if your lucky it will start.

I have a 106 escapade 1.5 diesel the car has covered 140000 miles and it has been no trouble what so ever it is the most reliable car I have owned, just passed its mot no work required I do an oil and filter change every 5k miles and she runs as smooth as can be for a diesel . I can recommend the car especially if you travel high miles to work and dont want high fuel bills.

Peugeot in my opinion seems to be the common name for a cheaply built, expensive to run, unreliable, difficult to work on, dangerous death trap. I've worked on a couple of these heaps of junk now, and I think they are only built to look good in a showroom as they are certainly not meant for the road. Most of the accidents reported in my local media seem to involve a peugeot. It seems to me that these lethal road rockets are too fast and too light for safety. Their power to weight ratio seems to be all wrong. No problem getting one up to 100mph, but try stopping one.

The French have a knack for making a small car, so that while they may not have the build quality of the Germans or the reliability of the Japanese, they are usually alot more fun to drive and this is true of the 106 as it was of the iconic 205. The 106 can be chucked into a tight corner and not be at all phased by this, no -one can teach peugeot anything about how to make a small car handle. Ive taken them around my favourite twisty roads and theyve shown much flashier cars how its done. They soon catch up on the straights though because although the petrol engines are responsive and have resonable power, the diesels (all normally aspirated)are hopelessly underpowered on mainroads. They are OK round town and are very economical on fuel. I did find the rather small clutch and brake pedals a bit of a problem, but herself, who usually drove the beast found them OK. Ours had no problems apart from wearing out 2 clutches in 3 years. The real problem with these cars is that they are very often bought on a budget or are first cars so they get neglected and abused, but if you spot one which has been looked after, they can make a good runabout.

cheap and cheerful.Easy to park
no powersteering on the diesel. Diesel is very slow

My girlfriend of 4 years has a 106 XND and it has given her nothing but trouble, to the point where she has replaced almost everything on the car in the 4 years I have known her.

Only buy a Peugeot 106 if you love hanging around garages and have a healthy bank balance, as you are gonna need it.

About 12 months ago i bought a 1998 R plate 106 1.1 Zest 2 after righting off a 306, i have not had a problem with it what so ever the car had covered 88,000 miles when bought and has now got over 100,000 on it and i have had no problem with it apart from general war and tear, i have done a lot of modification to the car however wether this plays any part but the modification is only to the engine but the rest of teh car has caused me no problem what so ever. the car is running in exess of 130bhp is very responsive, pulls well and is always ready to go from the first time you turn teh key,

The car is runningthe standard block (for insurance i had to keep teh bore down) a 16v gas flowed wired head from a 205 gti, high lift springs and valves a custom built cam, Running 4 throtlebodys with dark green injectors

i have lowered the compression ratio to allow for the eton screw supercharger and run nos with a progressive controller and with the ability to add an instant hit of nos for a bit off extra power (about 200 bhp) not bad from an 1100, a pipercross induction kit and a custom biult exhaust and 4-2-1 exhaust manifold with an interchangable cat replacement (to pass the mot) running a custom megasquirt engine management.

I MUST STICK UP FOR THE LITTLE PEUGEOT'S

I have owned a Peugeot 106 1993 L reg car for 2 years from 77,000 miles to 93,000 miles. I have had hardly any problems with it. It has taken me on long journeys without complaint. In one go, I travelled 300 miles in the middle of winter with no problems at all. Im wondering if all the complaints about the Peugeot 106 are coming from a newer model or people just aren't checking the cars over properly when bought. The service history on it shows hardly any problems, just general wear and tear. If you have problems, then you're either not looking after it, not checking it well when buying (with a mechanics opinion), buying a newer model or just unlucky!

Exhaust: Front pipe and catalyser are one long assembly. Pipe rusts but catalyser is ok. Result £200 bill due to a bad bit of design.
Someone should consider making an modified aftermarket cat to rear silencer pipe.

I've got a 106 - nothing but trouble. Radiator rusted after 2 years and then the alternator died on me after 3 years. Paint had bubbled inside the car within the first year, a seat wouldn't move and had to be replaced! Their reliability is totally unacceptable!

Its ank ok car but the parts are so expensive I might as well buy a Ferrari. To date i've had to have the central locking motor replaced, Gear box replaced, ECU replaced. Today I've had the Exhaust and Cat replaced £328.25. I've looked after her, regular services etc but by the time you have all this work done it leaves one thinking if it was really worth it (to date I've paid £1756,42 for replacement parts) Now I need a new ECU again, the last one only managed 9 weeks before it went.

i own a 1992 1.4xt. i have had it a
year now and i absolutely love it.
the only things it has had done to it is
a new radiator and a new exhaust.
its done over 130,000 miles on the
clock and its still going strong.
performance wise, its fantastic, and it
really can shift if i want it to.
im glad i opted for a petrol engine, as
it seems the diesels dont go down to
well in peoples reviews.

I have a 106 and after reading the reviews I believe I might have colins old car.colin was it green by any chance, mine is and when I bought it my mechanic said green was unlucky I didn't believe him, How wrong I was, month after buying it, the car would take off on its own revving like mad turned key off CAR ENGINE, car still running, hard to believe, frightening me to death., the only way to stop the car was to stall the thing. VERY DANGEROUS my mecanic wouldn't take much notice of me saying I was female and take your foot off the acelerator. when it happened to him he told me NOT to drive it, as it was leathal. He now believes that the engine was that knackered (only 74,000) that it was running off the oil from the sump and the faster it revved the more oil it sucked up so just running on its own,so 1 new engine, 4 new tyres, all brakes + drums, two exhausts, radio that caught fire and now more noises.I do now believe green is unlucky.only had the car just over a year, now looking for a new car. But people should be aware quite how dangerous a diesel car can be, and the person that sold this to me must have known it had this problem, as it would take quite a while for the engine to get to state it was in. I had to put a new engine in as I just could not sell it knowing how leathal it was. Could have caused an accident or worse. please tell me 306 estate will be better.

I have the 106 1.5 diesel escapade model
and I have only had wear
and tear problems (teething problems).
It is a 1996 on the N plate. I paid £1700 over 2 years ago for it,and I would call that value for cash.It came with a years m.o.t and 6 months tax. The car
has great mileage to the gallon, its very reliable, and can be called for in emergencies.I have had no problems with it,and will give it the thumbs up.

I too have a 106 diesel and am very surprised to read of other people's reliability problems. Mine is a 95 1.5 diesel, I have heard that the old 1.4 diesel was much poorer in lots of ways than the 1.5. My family has owned it since new and its never broken down. The breaks, exhaust and radiator have all been replaced, but the car is 8 years old. The only unexpected problem I can remember is the diesel pre-heating element thing breaking. Front tyres last over 30k miles while the backs are still going strong.

I think the car is pretty good, especially considering its price.

In summary:

Good points:
Good fuel consumption (up to 500 miles on one tank without careful driving-about 60mpg)
Fun handling
Comfy ride
Really stable-eg on motorways
Ability to keep up good speed on motorways
Good size boot
No rust at all (compare this to a Rover 100 or Seat Ibiza of the same age)
Reasonable space
Looks a lot nicer than most other small cars
Tyres last ages
You can lock the boot while its open (which makes carrying shopping easier-you dont have to put it down to lock the boot)

Bad Points
Not that quick
Really naff sound quality on radio (reccomend replacing it)
Quite basic-no temp gauge/cigarette lighter
Door pockets too small
Heavy steering on diesel
Camp graphics

I bought my Peugeot 106 Look 2 R reg - 1998 model in Nov 2000. I have had no problems since purchasing the vehicle and it is now at 51,000 miles, and no parts have needed to be replaced. It costs next to nothing on petrol and the Tax is also cheap. I would say that this is an ideal vehicle for a lady driver, who is not a speed demon!
I have been so pleased with my 106, so I have now gone and purchased a 206 GLX.

I was led to believe the 106 was a worthy successor to the 205, however my Key West Diesel was the most unreliable car I ever owned; wiring loom melted, broke down several times, finally overheated (no temp gauge - how much would that have cost?) which meant a write-off because the head might have gone porous at 70k miles, or the 'wet liners' might fail on re-build !
I shall go back to good reliable Fords.

i owned a 106 XND for two years and it was by far the worst car i have ever owned.

the car did handle and ride quite well and performance, bearing in mind its a small diesel engine, was acceptable

however the reliability was awful. the car does not have a temp gauge, only a red light, so if your engine starts to overheat the light will come on and seconds (and i do mean seconds!) later the engine has seized.

okay so lets say that could happen to any car and forget it.

practically every other part on the car seemed to need replacing, and as peugeot dealers are awful and expensive, i decided to try and do some of the work myself.

not a problem, i've worked on other cars and didn't think a small peugoet would present many problems. again the peugeot disappointed. anyone who has worked on cars will know the Haynes manuals. Haynes have a difficulty rating for each job, they use a numher of 'spanners' one spanner is a job anyone can do, 5 is a dealer only task.

the Haynes 106 manual is littered is 5 spanner jobs, before you buy this car go take a look at the manual in halfords and compare it to a ford manual, then remind yourself peugoet dealers ain't cheap, the cars ain't reliable, and you can't do the work yourself - still seems like a good buy?
