I love my maxi. It's the second one I've had and you can't beat it. If you want to take anything to the tip you can get it in the back and my son can take all his band's gear to gigs no trouble. I've never had any trouble getting parts for it and it certainly turns heads among a certain generation! I would never swop it for a modern car and if it finally gives up the ghost I'll definitely get another. I would love to hear from any other maxi owners around Ilkley, Leeds, Bradford.

The worst thing about an Austin Maxi, is the body. Lets face it, it is ugly, even by 1970's standards. But aside that fact the mechanicals are simple and very effective. And the engine, it is an un-sung hero, the 1750 cast iron "o" series engine is a delight. This engine has more torque than you can shake a stick at, hence why so many people say it was a great towing car. If only BL had developed it more. As a natter of interest(or not) the 1750 "O"series engine used in the Austin Maxi was derived from the 1500, but with a modified stroke. When BMC re-stroked the 1500 engine to give 1750 they found power outputs to be in excess of 100 bhp, so they de-tuned them. What a waste. If only they didn't? But if only BL didn't do a lot of things!
For 3 years I owned a Peugeot 106 diesel Great on fuel economy but not much else! Its first MOT it wanted a new set of steering bushes, but their fixed in to the lower trailing arms, Guess how much £280!!for two pits of Rubber!! Then the head gasget went!
IT HAD TO GO!!
I saw this old Maxi in the paper 1972 1750 just out of MOT Well i thought my dad had one of them and it always brought back memories Then i realised it was Tax exempt!! So I went and had a look at it Well it was only being sold because the owner had passed away, and her family didn't no what to do with it! It had only done 29000 miles from new! but without an MOT the family weren't intersted in her so what happened? They gave it to me Yes GAVE IT to me ! It was either me or pay the scrap man. All it wanted was a tiny hole plugg welding in the drivers sill:-£20 Passed its MOT and £70 to insure full comp!!ITS BEEN DOWN TO THE MIDLANDS & THE SOUTH EAST AND RACKED UP NOW 34500 miles. All she occasionally has is a stickin solenoid on the starter easily remedied with a tap from my jack lever! Quite an ingineous imobilizer!! Maxi Owners Club is well worth the £12, but most of the consumables:- Filters excetra: you can still get from motor factors, changin the oils a doddle! with a screw on filter! And that lovely fifth gear! You can just leave her on the motorway to cruise along:- in all the best £90 Ive ever spent!!

mocked by my friends, but im proud to be an owner,it's my pride and joy(when she starts). She has been known to be very tempermental(like most women i hasten to add!)
1750 HL has a wonderfully thrashy engine, and it is probably the only car ever produced to incorporate a double bed, shame that they're such a rarity today.
I managed to get my maxi ( 1750 HL - original singal carb type ) from a friend of my fathers, for about 50 pounds! This was in 1990-91. It just ran and ran, with as much maintanence as a sundial, for about 3 years. The double bed feature was ideal for a young person - drive to a party, park on private land, and you had your own personal hotel AND a lift home in the morning. Really comfortable, but she had a bad case on understeer. Also, the hydrostatic suspention seamed to suffer on the M25, with gradually increasing waves.
Top speed was around 90 m.p.h, but the ehninge was more tourque than revs, and with the 5th gear seaming a little low, I'm sure there could have been more.
The OHC arrangement makes head gasket changes tricky.
A BRILLIANT TOWING CAR. VERY RELIABLE FOR A CAR DESIGNED IN THE LATE 60`S. SMOOTH TO DRIVE AND EXTREAMLY COMFORTABLE, THE FRONT SEATS FOLD DOWN TO MAKE A DOUBLE BED. PARTS ARE A LITLE DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN FROM ROVER DEALERS THESE DAYS BUT THE AUSTIN MAXI CLUB HAVE PLENTY OF SPARES. MY MAXI IS 1750CC TWIN CARB 1981 X REG WITH 89000 MILES ON THE CLOCK. WELL WORTH CONSIDERING IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PRACTICAL CLASSIC ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE OWNED ONE IN THE PAST - REMEMBER HOW COMFY THOSE SEATS WERE.
I once bought a crash damaged Maxi for 35 pounds. One of the front wings was dented in an accident, which I managed to fix for another 25 pounds using a glassfibre panel. So for the grand total of 60 pounds I had myself my own Rolls Royce. The 1850 Twin Carb engine could pull away from B Reg XR3is/ The interior space was cavernous, as was the boot. The suspension was the old Hydrolastic thing I believe, which was soggy, but pretty comfortable. The two front seats folded right back to make a respectable double bed! Mine was a rod change gearbox - I'm told that the cable change boxes were pretty nasty. Also it was a heavy car, and pretty thirsty as a result. I think this car is now of the age where parts are becoming a little scarce. Find a good one, look after it, and provided you aren't too worried about your street credibility, you could have yourself a great car.

What an underrated car this is, extremely practical especially for a classic car. One of the most comfortable cars i have ever been in, only the Triumph Dolomite comes close. Overall a very good workhorse capable of traveling long distances with the minium of fuss.

I have owned BTO606K for the last 3 years, and love it more than any of the many cars I have driven.
It has a cabin larger than a Ford Granada ... super if you are on the large size !
I find most parts easy to get: Rover dealers seem to stock many obscure parts you would not expect to get hold of after 28 years.
A very useful overview of the Maxi's Technical shortcomings )(and even I have to admit there are some !) is to be found at:
The Maxi Owners' Club is very friendly, and most of the cars are in daily use... so one is not outshone by everyone else's showroom condition!
The Club can also provide many parts.
I am fortunate, in that my car is classed as a "Historic Vehicle" and I pay no Road Fund tax ./.. YES! a free disc every year.
My comprehensive, agreed value, insurance costs me £9.50 per month !
You may gather that I believe there is nothing like a MAXI !

PS On a run, fully-loaded, I get 39 mpg !
