with reference to the person who experienced an intermittent 4 beeps when switching off the ignition. I have the same issue on an omega and Vauxhall technical support tell me it's likely to be the Power Sounder (part of the alarm system) and i will need to take to vauxhall dealership. i will let you know when i have followed up.
These car are excellent cars to drive and own, BUT beware that the cam-belt wears a little more than most. So don't leave it to long between replacements, here speaks the voice of experiance!!!! If the cam belt goes it will no matter how quick you turn off the engine cause more damage than most, however on a lighter note tell the garage including Main Dealers to fit a new belt and compression test before striping the head as it will save you money and time because the all say strip the head first which sometimes isn't nessasary.
I have a 1999 2.5 Elite which i have owned for the grand total of 4 weeks at the time of writing.
I brought it with 83,000 miles on the clock, but it drives like new. It has so many extras like full leather, climate, memory seats, I am sure that to by a vehicle of another marque with the same spec level would have cost me at least double the price of the car i have.
Comfort is first class, I have the upgraded 6 CD changer which is superb, the engine is smooth and responsive and compared with many similar vehicles the power steering affords a lot of feedback.
My only niggle at the moment is that after about two weeks of ownership the central locking packed up, which I think may be down to the key going out of synch, the heated rear seats have stopped working but now the switch turns on the interior lights. I have a feeling it may be a relay that has gone pear shaped, but it goes in on Monday to hopefully be sorted out.
I have already done a few long journeus in the car, and I have been very impressed in that I can manage 2 - 3 hours behind the wheel without the need to stop for a break, and with the cruise control it makes for very relaxed driving on the Motorway.
So initial thoughts are impressive, it may be interesting to post up my thoughts in 12 months time.
I have been very pleased with my 1998 2.5 litre Automatic Elite. Servicing costs are very good, parts relatively cheap and I average approx 30mpg. I have had no breakdowns in my year of ownership and have not had to replace anything other than consumable items and 1 door speaker. The car looks good, has every conceivable luxury extra and is fantastic value when purchased second hand. My only advice is to be wary of pre 1997 vehicles as I have heard, from several sources, that they suffered from serious electrical problems. Although not as fast this is far more comfortable on long journey than my previous car, a 1996 BMW 530 Touring.

I have owned a 2.5 TD for the past 3 years, it has covered 110,000 miles. previous to my owning the vehicle it was owned from new by the county fire brigade, it was the chiefs car. I bought it in an aution for half the retail value. With it being a fire service vehicle it was maintained the same as the fire engines, in my time of ownership it has never had a problem in any way, and I have been the length of the county several times. This says a lot for the vehicles service history, perhaps it also says something about garage servicing as opposed to authorities servicing. if you get the chance of one of these low milage ex-fire vehicles, go for it, they are serviced regardless of cost, you also get a bargan with top price tyres fitted. This is the second Elite I have owned, both purchased new, both the 3 litre engines. The first one which I kept three years had done 110,000 miles when I sold it, some of the miles driven were towing a touring caravan,
The only problems I had was the drivers heated seat failed three times, and at around 90,000 miles it devoloped an oil leak from the automatic gear box.
Other than the problems mentioned the car was excellent, never broke down, always found it comfortable even driving none stop 2-3 hours at a time.
I liked it so much I bought another which is not quite 2 years old now, it has done 53,000 miles now, comfort etc is the same, but this one has had engine management problems for the last 10,000 miles, never actually broke down but not performing properly.
The garage has had to fit a new cat and electronic ignition control, but it is still not right, but they can not find anything wrong.
Also sometimes after a journey, when I switched the ignition of I get 4 loud beeps from under the bonnet, the garage doesn't no what this is either.
It is obviously a warning about something which concerns me that no one knows what.

I have owned the elite for almost 3 years from new and its has been and is still an excellent car, it drives well both solo and towing my caravan. The car has now done 73000 miles and still ging strong, doesn't burn oil, petrol consumption good for a 3000 litre engine. Only fault since new was the drivers heated seat which stopped working and was replaced under the extended warranty, will definately purchase a new one next year.
Owned for 3 years.
