I have owed 2 1991 BMW 318is's, one which was totaled, and I parted it out and now have parts for the 2nd one, which I am restoring. I love these 318is's, I have sold off a 1996 Mustang GT convertible and am selling off a 1975 Corvette Stingray that has had a frame-off restoration in favor of the 318is, performance and good mileage. The M42 engine is known for it's willing performance,I also own a 1984 318i that is a daily driver
fast and handles well
to light for bad weather, spin out

owned my 1994 calypso red 318is for 3 months,paided 1200 pounds,does 148 mph at 7650 rpm. a liecence lossing bargain.........but ive had a 320i with the same propshaft problem i have now......bugger.
HAVING OWNED MY 1998 M-TEC COUPE FOR 4 1/2 YEARS NOW,I HAVE TO SAY THAT IT IS AN ALL ROUND TOP MOTOR....PERIOD. NEVER ONCE LET ME DOWN,(EVER)...AND A DREAM TO DRIVE;IF A BIT HARD,BUT THAT'LL BE THE LOWERED SUSPENSION AND 18"RIMS ON ULTRA LOW PROFILES. OWNED A SUZUKI SWIFT GTI,WHICH IN A STRAIGHT LINE ATE GOLF AND TWIN CAM'S FOR FUN ,BUT BUILD QUALITY WAS POOR.WHAT THE BMW LACKS IN POWER IS MADE UP IN TRUE GERMAN BUILD QUALITY.DECENT ON PETROL UNTIL YOU 'BOOT IT' BUT IT'S A CAR TO DRIVE SLOWLY,SO YOU CAN APPRECIATE THE STARES.UNTIL YOU CAN AFFORD AN E36 TYPE M3 OR INSURE IT,THEN THIS MOTOR IS HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE REST./FOCUS/CIVIC/GOLF?.....HA-HA-HA,YOU'RE 'AVIN A LAARF!
LOOKS,BUILD QUALITY,RELIABILITY.
WAXING IT 52 TIMES A YEAR .

HELLFIRE RED M-TEC COUPE....DELICIOUS

I have the 318is saloon, its a fantastic car, fast, nibble, great handling(especialy with the m sport pac)and fantastic looks.i have had no probs what so ever, buy one!!!!!!
I have just bought a 1999 BMW 318is coupe with a 1.9 engine and an M body pack. I have to say that this is the most gorgeous car that I have both owned and seen for a long time. Falling short of cars like Ferraries and porches, the BMW 3 series in my opinion are by far the best cars with regards to looks, feel/quality and road handling. They just ooze quality.
I can't understand why coupe lovers would buy anything else other than a BMW.
I BOUGHT MY BMW 318IS , MY FIRST CAR, I AM SO PROUD OF IT I POLISH IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE SPEED, LOOKS, RELIABILITY,AND ECONOMY FANTASTIC. IT TURNS HEADS WHERE EVER I TAKE IT. NO ONE HAS A BETTER CAR THAN ME. I HAVE THE CAR TO PROVE IT RAYMOND SCOTLAND [Log in to view email]
I'm getting repeated fuel system problems.. first the engine would stutter momentarily as though there was no petrol getting through. Then I had a bit of a fuel leak. This, apparently, was due to something in the on board computer not working properly. Next the fuel relay went and there is still a strong smell of petrol around the car and i noticed a small patch of fuel on the ground under the car. This isn't always there but it is a bit of a worry. Anyone have any ideas?
I,ve just brought my first BM, 318is Schnitzer and love it more than my missus! One question i have is whether they are fitted with an immobiliser as standard? Its an L reg but still a beaut
I have a 1996 318is Coupe M-tec. Great car and very good handling, with fabulous rear wheel drive (which is the best!) Looks fantastic, and the next best thing to an M3, without the big bills!! Be careful in the wet, as these cars don't handle well at the rear, and if not careful, you will spin - believe me, it happened to me and others who have the same car!! Apart from that, very rewarding to drive/own, with a nice flexible engine!
Fantastic on hilly roads and corners. Huge amounts of torque uphill for such a small engine. Rubbish in 1st gear but once you get to 50mph it pulls like a mofo.
Other than a minor fuel leak on my 1995, (fixed free, right away, by the dealer), there's been no problem in the two and a half years I've owned it. Truly a fun car, not the fastest, but handles just beautifully, especially on the hilly, winding secondary roads here in B.C. Mileage is actually very good, especially on the highway. An excellent reference point for other manufacturers to aim for. I'm a fan!
I bought my 93 318iS 2 years ago after many years of company vauxhalls/fords and it has been a delight to own. Toured Ireland last year with 4 adults at avererage 46 mpg. The car still looks lovely' Only gripes: paint chips too easily, engine noise intrusive inside (v quiet outside...), harsh ride in back seats, clutch plays up in heavy traffic. Cost of ownership is OK if avoiding main dealers
I've had a Golf GTI, Corolla GTI and now I have a 1991 H reg BMW 318is. The car is pathetic in the first gear but much more powerfull in the 3rd and 4th gears. At standstill I have to change from first to second gear twice as quickly compared to my previous cars to reach the same speed. I must admit in the BMW I feel a lot safer and more in control. I've had constant electrical problems with the car since i've bought it, the electric mirors work now and then, i've had that checkout out (by a very trusted electrician) and now the central locking is not working! I have to get that checked out now. I have spoken to other BMW owners who say that they've had problems with the electrics in there cars...Hmm!
My 1996 318is is the best car i have ever owned with great build quality and refinement, great looks and image and a superb chassis, but is let down in my view by a lack of punch in fifth for overtaking, sometimes i have to remind myself it has 140bhp under the bonnet because it doesnt always feel like it, and if you use the revs the fuel economy suffers. My car has also suffered from the odd minor electrical niggle. But apart from that a 1st class motor. A good affordable 1st step into BMW motoring which for a coupe is very practical.
I have mine a year now and it's the best car i've owned. It looks great and with the M kit , it handles like a real sports car...next car can only be an M3 !
I have owned my 318is for one year now. In that time the car has been lowered, 40mm at the front and 35mm at the rear and a set of 7.5x17 M3 alloys added. A BBR chip, Green Induction kit and Remus exhaust system have also been fitted. Power is up to approx. 165BHP. It actually goes very well. Average fuel consumption is around 36MPG. No major problems have been encountered with the exception of the catalytic converter giving up the ghost. A replacement cost £385. Does your 318is have a bad flat spot at around 4000RPM. If so, then have the cat checked out.
Having recently purchased a 1993 K reg BMW 318is coupe for £7,125, I have to say I am absolutely delighted with the car! Its quick, predictable and most importantly looks fantastic! However, it does seem to drink petrol horrrrrribly quickly! The pressures of the modern sports car eh?!
