Bought our rover 416 last nov 07..day after it wudnt start..kept goin like this startin and not startin so replaced starter motor...then battery...then in jan suspected head gasket had gone took it to local garage and they cocked it up a treat...had them do it again for a second time and they still cocked it up..head still leakin oil everywhere..knocked alternator out cos that got covered in oil too...cost us £3-400 for mot in march...2 new tyres..125.00 for new alternator ..now started blowin water out!! We spent more on this car in 6 months we had it then wot its insured for!!... so 2weeks ago we got shot!! best thing we did..got a little honda civic 'L' reg only got 43.000 miles on clock..genuine mileage too as we have all service history with this little car..only thing i dont like about this car is the boot...its soooo tiny!! i luvd the rover boot...i buy a lot of shoppin!! but wud never have another rover i'm afraid..probably if the garage hadnt done a bodged job on the head gasket repair..might have been different..who knows??...

Big Boot..nice interior..half leather seats.
not reliable at startin at whatever time of day.

This is my first car (Rover 416 SLi Tourer) and i LOVE it, it's taken my family everywhere, Cornwall, Devon, Scotland, Wales, Portsmouth, everywhere! It's done 61,724 miles and is currently being given a bit of t.l.c. When he (he is affectionately known as Ronnie) was in a car park next to the Honda Concerto, it looked better than the Honda, smarter, with the chrome grille etc. This car is a great car, because it has a soul, the only problems i've had with it are that the heater doesn't work on setting 1 and a flat battery. People laugh when i say i have a Rover, but they are suprised when they find out i have a car (am 14 years old). When they're inside him, they can see how much better than their cars he is, he has an armrest in the back AND the front. What can i say? He is the best car we've had, and we've had all sorts!!!!!!!

My 416 Sli is rapid it burns off most idiots at the lights cuz they think im driving my grandads car until all they can see is my dust. ive had my problums with it, new head gasket, cambelt, fuel pump, injectors, gearbox, but other than it costing me as much as buying a new BMW, Its BRITISH and i love and support BRITISH made anything. it looks good drives good and is packed with everything i cant complain, if you look at other car forums you will see just as much complaints about other cars. where are the people on here telling there good stories about their rovers???
i would recomend anyone to buy a 400/200 series just for the difference, my 416 p reg has done 125,000 miles, inside it looks brand new! its laid out nice inside it looks the part, ok ok ok the walnut plastic dash is #@!* but other than that it looks great.
i drove my mates 53 plate vectra the other day, what a bag of #@!* the inside looked, like a dull day in skegness and it had no go in it at all (1.8i)
GO ON BUY BRITISH!!!

I have had this car for over 2 years now. Im 19 years old and i thrash the living day lights out of this baby. It is zippy with some grunt, gets me 450km/s per tank which is about $35AUD or $16 UK pound. Needed some work on brakes and windows because the previous owner was a moron but it has done 175,000kms and is over 17 years old.

One trusty mobile that has the retro 80s look to it

DON’T BUY A ROVER!! NEW OR SECOND-HAND

Rovers are rubbish,
or as the french say "Name of a dog!! - Rover"
Wife bought a second hand 'Rover Approved' car, 416Sli, with 9000 miles on it, now has 62k. Loads of stuff has gone wrong and you have to force the dealership to fix the parts under the warranty. Every trick in the book used to duck their responsibilities .
So far: (excluding clutches,brakes,exhausts)
a)Power steering pump
b)Hydralic clutch master and slave
c)Rear wheel bushes (3 sets so far)
d)Clock display LED failed.
e)Inside/outside air selector not working on delivery
f)heater fan only works on two settings.
g)Electric window came off its' runners
h)cooling systemn failed
i)Heating system failed completely after being 'repaired'
i)Head Gasket failed (expensive!!)
Other problems:
Servicing costs very high and Rover dealers sly, rude and incompetent.
The parts that fail are left in the boot for you. I've seen better quality on the airfix kits I used to buy when I was a kid.
The New Rover (new labour?) directors have pocketed the interest free £500million loan from BMW (yes £500 million!!) and have lent in on to THEIR OWN COMPANY (Rover that is) at interest, thereby making a nice turn from doing nothing). Nice work if you can get it.
By contrast, I was wise enough to buy a second hand Honda Accord with 19k miles, now has 65k.
What has gone wrong with the Honda then?
Nothing!
What nothing?
Yes nothing!
Nothing at all?
Nothing at all!

Honda doesn't ask for Govt. money anywhere in the world. They say if govts' gave them money they'd give it back. Why, because when govts. give car manufacturers money they expect to tell how/where to build the cars!! Honda doesn't want that.
And if governements are generally poor builders of cars, then British Labour Govts must be the worst of the worst! Don't we remember what they did to Brit Industry in the 70s??
Maggie was too soft and dithering. She should have made shutting down British Leyland her top priority, she should have put it her manifesto!!
If you don't believe me. Look around the web. It's full of complaints about Rover cars.

What can we do? you ask.
So sucessful have they been at conning their customers that they will be soon be trying to conning the government(ie the taxpayer) asking for more taxpayers pay to 'keep essentail high-skilled jobs in the midlands! or some such spiel.
Rover sales are collapsing and when they come cap-in-hand to the taxpayer trying to con you out of your hard-earned, insist that your MP strives might and main to keep their sticky fingers out of your back pocket!
Meantimes, buy a Honda (many are built in UK)- don't buy crappy Rovers, ethier built in India, Poland or the UK!!

The1998 416i I drive was originally my company car when new the sunroof needed replacement as did two gear boxes initially for jumping out of second and then for a whine that increasingly got louder. At about 20,000 the inlet manifold gasket was replaced as it leked water. I decided to buy it after 4 years apart from the initial problems it had been quite reliable. in sept 2003 it required the back suspension arm bushes replacing which is a labour intensive job therefore expensive and now at 72000 the head gasket has gone . So if you are thinking of buying a Rover with about 60000 on the clock don't this seems to be when they start giving problems.

1996 Rover 416i is now in a garage for it's third head gasket, which I hope is going to be free as it was only done 390 miles ago. It has cost £850 in the last 9 months in garage bills. I like the car but hate that engine.

Well what can I say... except this.. My Rover 416 gti is my second Rover 400 series but this one runs on rocket fuel! 0-60 in 8.2 seconds, quarter mile in 13.1 seconds (measured at Crail). Top speed around 140mph and enuff torque to put the driver in the back seat! LOL

I have a 1991 416 sli with Honda engine. I bought it second hand 21/2 years ago. It's done over 150,000 miles and it's the best car I've had...with one exception!. Now and again the emergency fuel cut-off switch goes into the off position after the engine is switch off and when the switch is pressed down the car cannot be started for about 20 mins. Can anyone help me diagnose this problem??

Very Very poor!! We had a 1998 416 SLI Tourer (The rare estate jobby) We got it cheap from Rover cause of where my dad worked. It was poor on performance, poor on space even tho it was the estate. Not very luxuriouse and noisy which we were told was normal... BY ROVER!! We have also had Friends that have bad experiences with Rover engines! Not impressed wouldn't buy one again. My dad finaly traded the rover in for a 1991 Volvo 940GLE estate and £2500 (enough £££ to buy a nice caravan as we doubted the rovers ability to pull a caravan) cause we missed the 1986 740GL estate we had before the rover!!
