I had a safari for 6 months. Having run most different kinds of citroen (including an SM, 4 CX's 2 D's 1 BX and a ZX)she was easily the most fun of them all. I resurrected mine from he scrapper until a blocked radiator caused the engine to overheat and eventually blow. I cant wait until i can get another D safari. It can do everything and anything. It IS the best car in the world.
Truly enormous vehicle, with seven or eight seats, loads of luggage space, and enough room to land an aircraft on the roof. Quirky hydraulic suspension makes it a bit of a maintenance liability though, best left to the specialists.

This vehicle is grossly underrated not only as a classic car but also as a fantastic workhorse. I use my Safari on a daily basis and I can tell you that she keeps up with the usual mundane herd and manages to turn more heads than any fancy modern garbage. The practicalities of this car remain unsurpassed today after 40 odd years. I journey to France often with a full load on board - no problem for this suspension, I arrive as relaxed as I left. OK there isn't the power available to travel at 90 mph all the way and the wind noise get a bit obtrusive, but hey, this is France and a lovely countryside is on view, so I take it easy and relax. I paid just under £3000 for her six years ago and she's been almost 100% reliable. If you know the right people, and I'm lucky that I do, nothing about her is an enigma. She does 30-35mpg around town and runs on un-leaded fine (no adjustments). I also run a CX 25 GTi which has been so unreliable to sometimes make me want to crush it. But the old girl D just goes on and on.... She is the least fancy of them all, a five speed manual with 2.0 carburettor engine - less to go wrong. Rarer than the saloons, the Safari is the DS to go for, I just can't imagine life without her!
