Look. It's an Alfa. And the S3 is 25 or more years old. It is still fantastic to drive. Sound great, handles great, looks great. And since you can pick up a very good example for under £5K, drive it regularly for 2 years or more and then sell it for £5K itis a no brainer. The best place for Alfa parts is http://www.classicalfa.com The best garage for servicing is Boxer Motors in Maidenhead. I have had my S3 for 3 years. Cost £3500 and I have spent another £4K on it. Starts first time, really annoys boy racers in hot hatches, looks great and turns heads. I have lost count of the number of people who have come up to me to comment favourably on the car. Drives well - I have used a very good trimmer for hood, carpets, etc (if you need details, contact me). Overall - the most fun car that I have ever had. I use it almost every day.
Looks great. Sounds great, drives great. Annoys boy racers, handles well. Very cheep to buy and can be brought up to great mechanical and body standards very inexpensively.
Gearbox always stutters in 1st. That's a normal Alfa problem.
S3. Converted to RHDby Bell and Cowell
Owned for 4 years.
I have a 1600 Duetto and compared to the MGs andTriumphs I have owned it is a wonderful drivers car.
True, the engine needs some TLC, but nothing more than 3 -4 minutes warming up from cold and regular oil changes. Just dont tharash it when it is cold.
Twin cam engine with 5 speed synchro box and discs all round. compare that to a similar GB offering in 1967.
The bodywork needs careful maintenance - Pinninfarina who built the body, seemd to have an aversion to using rustproofing, and the fllor mounted pedals ensure wet ankles in the floods.
but, that aside, it looks stunningg with the pram like hood down and is still good for 115mph and 60 in less than 11 seconds
Bought new 3litre spider Sept 2001. Very good performance but can slide away if you are not careful on corners. Stunningly attractive . 3L model needs regular brakes and tyres.
Originally 1750cc, later increased to 2000cc and a rare 1300 model. As with most Alfas, great fun to drive, but do tend to have rust problems. Can also have problems with the alloy engine.
