I have owned a SM23 sailer since December 07. I sailed the boat back from Burnham to Queenborough accross the Thames Estuary in a force 8. At no time did it wory me. Since then I have done a lot of sailing from St Katherines dock to Woodbridge and down to Ramsgate. Though I have found the boat to be very seaworthy it is not by any stretch of the imagination fast. Nor does it tack at all well against the tide. Since replacing the main for a fully battened I have reduced the weather helm, but once the boat heals to 30 degrees the ability to steer is lost. I do believe though that how it sails has everything to do with the keel. Fin and drop keels will behave better than my bilge keel, however I bought the bilge so I could explore creeks and cut across mud banks, and to that end it is a great little boat.
(Bilge) Can go where fin keels fear to tread, very safe boat.
Sails like a bucket when tacking, and very slow.

After a long time of refitting in- and out we've made several trips. Easy to handle ( also solo). Up to 7 bft 45 degree's angle ( no problem). Enough space to live for overnight trips etc. Owners since 5 years.
Quality construction and first class hardware & fittings! Mine is 33 years old and looks new. Other reviews are right about the weatherhelm; I'm working on balancing the boat, but haven't found anything that really works - yet.
Own a SM23 for about 15 years now, did several North sea crossings from DenHelder to the UK very reliable heavy for her size sturdy like a lifeboat, suffers a lot of weatherhelm therefore it's not easy to let the boat steer herself.
I've been sailing my Seamaster 23 for two years around Cornwall and she handles the Sea well. She's been over 40 degree's in a Force 6 but does suffer a bit of Weather helm. A lovely little boat.
my parents bought 1 year ago a seamaster sailor, probably a 23, but we're not shure. With a small wind it's easy to sail. But we want to know how much wind can he have and how many degrees on one side can he surely have? We made 20 already.
We owned a Seamaster 23 BK for 15 years. Very Sea-Kindly but surprisingly fast at sea. Passages at 5 to 6kts were not uncommon. Head-room is slightly restricted and portly people might have problems with the dinette. Otherwise a good choice for a pocket cruiser.
Easy to handle. Also solo. Enough space on board for daytrips overnight trips. Vallue quality / quantity OQ. Safety: only when you put some extra features in it. ( fire - smoke - etc - equipment).
Owned for 3 years.
