I bought a superb 1988 BMW 530i two
years ago for less than £4000. I do
about 17,000 miles a year and there's
164,000 miles on the clock. It's
serviced regularly and the magnificent
3 litre engine is silky smooth. Apart
from tyres the only major expense has
been a replacement electronics board.
Petrol consumption is quite high of
course - 20+ mpg but it can take LRP
which was a boon during the petrol
crisis last year. Best car I've ever
had!

now on my second. no1 was a 1990 12 valve 525i se auto which i had for 2 years. all it needed in all that time was tyres. no2 is a 1993 24 valve 525i se auto. a fantastic saloon in every way. punchier than the 12v but just as smooth and comfortable. this one has air con and leather as well as the standard se spec (esr ew cl etc.). all this one has needed in 2 years has been tyres, an air con condenser and a radiator. both have had approx 80k on the clock. buy one now but buy the best you can afford and make sure it has its service history. bmw dealers very good also.

I recently bought a 1990 535iS with virtually mint bodywork and interior and 100k on the clock, and I'm in love!

It's built like a bank vault and superbly comfortable, but ferociously fast with it. By far the best car I've ever driven let alone owned, a peerless all-rounder with intergalactic cruising ability and the kind of performance and handling that makes you laugh out loud and draws involuntary obscenities from the passenger seat. And the best bit?

It only cost me £900!! Almost feels like cheating...
