As a boy my father owned 3 rover p6's, All of them 2000sc. Since then i loved them. I managed to buy myself one 2 years ago. I love it so much, although to look at her you wouldn't believe it. I have recently been buying no end of parts for her and soon will have the old girl back firing on all fours, so to speak.
Power. Comfort. Style. Grace.
The only problem i have with my P6 is i need more time for her.
I have 7 Rover P6 cars, 2 estates amongst them. I love the P6 and use one as an everyday car as well as having a show condition example. I would recommend joining the Rover P6 Drivers Club which is run by enthusiasts for the real P6 Enthusiast. They are always happy to help with technical information and sourcing parts at the most economical price. look up the rp6dc at http://www.p6club.com
The P6 Rover is the best kept secret in the Classic Car World! Cheap enough to buy and very easy to work on with the exception of the rear brakes (easier to take the calipers off and do it in comfort). Anyone thinking about buying one should be a member of the P6 Rover Owners Club, they have over 1700 members, an excellent bi-monthly magazine 'P6 News' and some very knowledgable people in the midst. I own two of these things, anybody want to relieve me of one?
I restored my 1974 2200SC in 1998 and took it all the way down to the South of France and back.I sat"restored", it has been restored mechanically, the bodywork still looks a mess! The water pump gasket failed near Valence but we soon repaired it using the bos from a carburetor overhaul kit and some buider's silicon. The following year I went to the South of Spain and back in it.It still can cruise all day at 85mph in total comfort, you really don't need a V8.
The other one is a 3500cc estate, only 156 were made. I have done far less mileage in this and the engine desperately needs a cam. Looks quite nice though. Remarks about comfort apply to this one as to all P6s.
I owned a 1972 3.5 Coupe for 10 years before I had to let it go. It was a superb car, quiet, comfortable and powerful. I overhalled the engine and it ran beautifully, it could match a Golf GTI away from lights!! Its main problem was rust....that and the petrol costs! I could get 22mpg on a run but only managed 12 around town. Best of all the Rovers in my opinion, I wish we still made cars of that style and quality. Philip from Caterham
Although a bit old fashioned, an endearing and comfortable car, with it's own character. Trustworthy, and easy to live with, and in spite of it's age lively performance with the V8. A very good choice for a person wishing to run a practical classic, as long as you family is not too big. Boot is lousy.Wonderful car though!!
These cars will always have a place in my heart. I had one as my first car. It was a tobacco leaf brown 2000. It wasnt lightening quick but one of the most comfortable and fun cars I have ever owned. Sitting behind that massive steering wheel left you feeling like you werent so much sitting in the car but more enveloped by the car. These cars will always have a presence on the road. I sadly lost mine to the dreaded tin worm. I stripped it down with the intention of restoring it but at that time it was a little out of my league due to the extend of the rust. But I sold it to a guy who took it to Whales to restore. So if you see PNA 57J in your rear view mirror give it a little respect that it deserves. That car has seen alot.
My Rover P6 was sadly lost in a workshop fire, and it wasn't until it was gone that I realised how much I loved it. It was a 3.5 litre V8, which was fast, comfortable, and had the most fantastic example of 70's British styling. You could spend thousands on a TVR, and have the neighbours brand you as a poser, our you could buy one of these V8 beauties, enjoy the same engine and no one would know. The ultimate Q car.
I'm only 22, but have just bought a Green '72 Rover p6 2000SC, and must say it is quite a car. Although it doesn't have the V8, the car still offers good performance around town, and will be my everyday car from now on. Definitely a well-kept secret within the classic car world, and if you are thinking about getting one, I would recommend it very highly.
