I have decided that I want to buy a Hunter Europa. I have only ever sailed yachts around 34ft and have fin keels. Can any one give me some advice as to what is the best arrangement on the Europa, Bilge keel, fin keel and I think I have seen on some adverts triple keel.
This boat is fantastic, Its my first sailer and i love it fast agile can be sailed single handed trust me i know. Just needs a slight improvement on accomodation.
I recently sought, found a few and selected one of these, not the best kept or most geared up of the bunch - but that gives me scope to do my own thing with her- for 1400 quid. She had been on barrels in a yard in Plymouth for a year and was desperate to get back on the water, not knowing the boat I was a bit aprehensive as my plan was to sail her back to Brighton the day she went in. The coaming at the doghouse needed re-inforcing and a squirt of w.d. here n there and we left Plymouth in a f6 westerly, o.m.g. what a little boat, 5-7 ft rolling set and she screamed along with full main and no2 with obvious delight reaching 9.5 kts when surfing, next day Lyme bay to Weymouth, confused sea big wind- she ate it up, the cockpit stayed mostly dry.Day 3 saw me on my own to Poole and we got caught in the manic and dangerous tidal race at St. Albans Head - BIG standing waves with a f5 up our chuff and despite the sixpence/ninepence situation in my oilies she held her own and thouroughly won me over - respect to the designer. With the outboard on in a chop you should really keep some main up to stabilise the boat to keep your engine in the water av. speed under motor a comfy 6.5 kts. Going to weather in a w.a.t. situation was somewhat wetter for me, E wind blowing 4>5> then 7, 5-6ft waves on the nose proved well not that comfortable despite my expensive hpx oilies etc and singlehanded gave me no respite from the abuse from Cowes to Brighton ( 11 hours).Sleeping on her was fine in the marina, in a gore-tex bivvi 'tho 'cos condensation wa apparent in cooler weather- something to address later! For overnighting or weekenders as a parent/child combo it really can work and give you that huckleberry fin-ness you seek.Getting to know her has proved a wise investment was initially made. Overall 'tho, if you want a pocket cruiser that'll get you there safe and relatively fast then seriously entertain one of these, for the money it's fantastic, regularly out-pacing 25-27 footers with a super feel on the stick, ya cant buy mine 'tho, not for a couple of years anyway.
An exellent boat with graet handling and top performance.

I own a Europa based on Ullswater in the Lake District. It is a fantastic boat. Very durable, safe and 100% enjoyable. with the europa you get all the stability of a keel boat (Cruiser) but the feel of a dinghy ie. lots of strings to pull and spinnaker to play with as well as having a responsive and sensitivefeel to the helm. I use the boat for club racing and family cruising. With a 2hp outboard and and under various combinatons of sail to suit the weather I quite happily will take my young family out for a days cruising. My youngest auaghter is only 18 months! Overall a good safe, fun boat with great looking lines. It is happy in ALL weather. Most of all is the price. All this costs around £1800 to £2200. Not bad Eh?

The safest and most satisfying small boat that I have ever sailed. Impeccable manners even when seriously overcanvassed. I have owned bigger boats but still regard my (2) Europas as the standard by which I judge others. Oliver Lee was a Genius!

One of the very few small cruisers which sails properly! This is a very useful safety feature when dealing with a lee shore, for instance. The ancestry of the hull is pure racing keelboat (squib) and it shows; basic seaworthyness has not been compromised for accomodation. Had one for six years, never bought an outboard, she'd do everything under sail. Boat was completely happy in anything up to force seven; might have managed more, but skipper bottled out! Not too uncomfortable to live aboard,in fact surprisingly good; and a complete delight to sail.
