I have owned this car (2001 model) for 3 years now and done about 30,000 miles in it. I bought it with 89k on the clock and a full service history. Apart from normal wear and tear and replacement of parts given it has done 118k now, there have been no serious faults at all. The 2 litre Ecotec turbo assisted engine ticks over perfectly, provides a nice 187 horse power (0-60 in 7 seconds) and has never missed a beat. I have had no problems either with the gearbox or electrics. I have recently had a new power steering rack fitted (£350), although that was to be expected given the car's mileage.

The car really comes into it's own on open roads and motorways where it will cruise at any speed you want easily (top end is about 155mph) and is a very enjoyable drive on these type of roads. The power makes overtaking both fun and safe. The suspension is stiff so around town amongst the potholes its not the most comfortable car on the road, but it makes up for that in loads of other ways.

The fuel consumption is reasonably good given the car has 187hp.......it averages about 23 in town driving and about 32 on motorways, although if you cruise at 60mph and keep off the gas pedal it will do about 36. Problem is, it's hard not to hit the gas pedal as the power is rather enjoyable!

The TIMING BELT change interval on this car is only 40,000 miles, but it's not a big job (unlike on some cars) and to change it and the timing kit is about £200 (Vauxhall Dealership including labour).

Overall, this is a great car to drive and own and not that expensive to run given the power it has.

Fast, great fun to drive, reliable, superb engine, heated seats
Group 15 insurance, higher than average road tax, a bit thirsty in town driving

Comment by daron24:and its alloys arent as nice either! (same alloys as on the "Zafira GSI" ...who wants to look like that eh?)

Now come on, at least our gsis dont have the same wheels as the corsa c SRI, enough said.......

Also whats all this my GSI/SRI Turbo will beat a Civic Type R, to be honest i highly doubt it..

Topgear Lap times:
1:32.8 – Honda Civic Type-R (EP3-2004 Facelifted)
1:33.0 – Vauxhall Astra VXR

So I'm pretty sure it'll beat a GSI/SRI which has the z20let producing nearly 200bhp considered to the VXR with the leh which produces 237BHP even if the track had longer straights.

Not many people are aware of the power which is hiding under the hood..
Turbos are a really nightmare if they go, expect to be using ur months pay packet on a new turbo

i have bought a 1.4i hi torq merit on L plate hatch. The car overall was a bargain full service history 5 months tax and 7 months MOT for £250.00 as quick sale needed. i have got 120mph out of her and it it very reliable and it does over 50 miles to a gallon which i find very good with the price of fuel these days. It comfortable, clutch is light and i definately would by one agen but i would still rather the 1.7td estate astra but this astra has alot of room.

My car is better then yours, my dad is harder then your dad.......
What you all kids or what, gsi is better then sri, they are both the same but vauxhall decided to make the sri a limited edition, i mean there is a hell of alot of astra's on the british roads anyways and to someone that doesnt know much about limited editions ,turbo to bloody sri, weather you have a sri turbo or gsi your going to get classed as a guy with a common car anyways, neither is faster unless gsi having the added extras it could weigh abit more, instead of thinking your car is better get real as they are both the same engine, every comment on this so called review is useless to someone that is planning on buying one as its just a bunch of kids arguing which is better which at the end of the day both the same , good for yous that wanted the extras leather seats makes it more posh in away but doesnt really do much in performance just puts the price up abit, both nice cars just pity about the idiots driving the bloody things

both great cars

Hi i'm a vauxhall tech i own an sri turbo they are great cars, especially when they have been played with :-).
Just been reading a few comments people have been making on here, lol. both cars have the same running gear the only differance is the interior, switchable traction control, wheels and body kit. both vehicles run standard 200hp@5600rpm and 184 lb/ft both 150 mph both 0-60 in 7.0 secs.
Overall both cars are fantastic if you want a rare car go for the sri if you want extras go for the gsi,
In my opinion i feel the SRI is the better option as in years to come there will be less sri's than gsi's making them a rare classic in other words worth alot more!

Had a problem with the engine management light coming on and ended up having a new coil pack fitted. Then a day later it came on again and ended up having a brand new ECU which went into the hundreds of pounds. The problem was the car became very sluggish with no real throttle on acceleration and sounded like the exhaust was blowing. The car went back into the main national dealership whom said i had sticky valves and continued to put fuel injection cleaner in. The car was o.k for a while but the problem has returned and failed its mot on emissions. Its due to go back to the garage tomorrow so hopefully this long standing problem will be sorted out instead of the garage offering a quick fix solution.

A nice drive
Vauxhall garages reluctance to sort the problem correctly and fob women off with excuses.

Its awesome all for less than 10 grand!!!
This car is very reliable and fairly cheap to run its great

I own a 1997 1.4 16v 5dr gold Astra, and I love it to bits. Its comforable to drive and accomadating. It can carry 6 or 7 people in relative comfort, but is far from the best accelerating or handling cars I have owned. My friends 1.2 8v corsa beat me the other day just proving how lacklustre the engine really it. Starts every time though...

Power steering, comforable

I have owned an Astra Twinport Sportshatch since june 2006. I also had an Astra 1.8 edition 100 convertible until recently and the convertible (a 2003 model) was by far the superior car of the two with good ride handling (contrary to so called expert reviews in magazines) and was alround a far more versatile and gutsy car. The new Astra is ok - don`t get me wrong BUT it has a really fatal design flaw - I`m 6 foot - not tall - not short - but whichever way I position the seats - which are comfortable- and the steering wheel - I cannot see the instrument panel indicator warning lights - also with these infuriating indicators you really have no idea at times whether they are indicating, have switched off or have stayed on after turning - the only way to tell is to look at the dash - which you cant`t see!!

I have had a 1.6 16V Club since July 2003 and have had very little problems with it. Its done 66k.

Apart from the usual wear and tear, I put a set of genuine Vauxhall front discs and pads on it about 5k ago, and right from the word go they would grind when hot. I've had them checked and everythings safe, so I just live with it.

Also, about 10k ago, the coil pack needed replacing (Very lumpy on acceleration but no fault codes/no eng management light). This cost about £100, but no probs since then (Fingers crossed)

If you want a tough cheap car that has a kid proof interior, then this car is it. It's got good performance, good handling and it's amazing what you can fit in it.

Just make sure you keep up with the servicing and never miss the 40k/4yr cambelt intervals.

I would suggest you target a very low mileage, ex motability car. (Which has guaranteed service history etc)

I have a 2000 (W) 1.7 DTI 16V astra which i purchased for £2195 from wokingham police. The reason for this review is to get help from you, the reader more than anything. The car seems to Judder/hesitate throughout the rev range. i took the car to a vauxhall dealer and at first they told me that there was nothing wrong with my car and that it was probably the way i was driving it! If anyone has had a similar problem and had it repaired successfully please let me know as it is now getting expensive and taking the piss a bit!
Many thanx!

We currently have our 3rd Mk4 Astra in a row, and can't honestly say anything really bad about any of them. The first was a 1.8CDX 5 door, which was followed by a 1.8 Convertible, while the current one is a Turbo Convertible. The only comment I would really make is that the 1.8 Convertible is a little underpowered ( which is why we swapped to the Turbo ).

I have just brought a New Astra 1.8i Design. The Car is lovely to drive although there are a couple of niggles.
1. The Electric Mirror and Window controls are situated too close to the front of the drivers door, making it easy to open the rear windows when in fact you want to open the drivers window. When drving you dont want to be looking down at controls when you should be concentrating on the Road.
2. The auto wipres seem to have a life of their own sometimes, but its not a problem as they work!

Overall the car fantastic to drive, a comfortable driving position and plenty of power when you need it. I get on a run 38.2 MPG approx 400 to a full tank which isnt bad. (average speed on the motorway 70 - 80 mph )

I'd recommend the car to you all, as its the best small / family car out and should compet well with the New Focus.

I've just bought a 02 plate SRi turbo,I've driven plenty of astra's in my time as a work for a vauxhall garage.I don't see what the fuss is about with the GSi and the SRi,Its all about your own personal tastes. If u want individuality then I would go for the SRi turbo (there being only 500 made).I ain't bothered about leather and and all those other fangly bits you get on the GSi,at the end of the day its just something more to go wrong. Also the Sri is cheaper to insure
nearly £4000 grand cheaper and it can keep up with the GSi no problems. Most of the time GSi and SRi owners will end up modifying their cars to the max anyways so who cares?

I can't understand you all. As far as the guy with the modified astra SRi goes, i thought we were talkin about the SRi versus the GSi (in standard guise) i could modify a rover 25 to 300bhp and then say 'my rovers better than an impreza'.

In the order of things at vauxhall the GSi is better than the SRi, "FACT" just like SXi is better than Club. For starters the GSi has all the trimmings, better body kit, better seats etc. also 200bhp as aposed to 189 in the SRi turbo (yes its 189 standard also 'fact'). Also the GSivisited the OPC in germany where it recieved extensive chassis tuning from the opel performance masters, so its a revised chassis for a sharper drive. The suspension had a little work too. We are talkin about an all round 'better' car with the GSi, maybe not a lot better, but better none the less. And personally i would pay the extra to say i drive the 'BEST' astra that vauxhall ever made, rather than the great pretender.
