The Austin 7 was the very first car i ever owned, it was a 1938 pearl, it had a 750cc engine the exact was 747cc, it was great it was in dark blue and had black wings and it had wire spoke wheels,it had rexine seats so easy to clean ,it was around the last year they were made,
I was 14years old, and it was an old woodcutter guy called Mr Thompson,, I had been saving up for ages and they were demolishing houses near my home, and they wanted bricks cleaned to reuse in housebuilding plus I got all scrap lead and block tin found in all old houses, block tin looked like lead but was light in weight like alloy, and rare to find value was extremely high three weeks workin g there day and night and I saved £15 after giving rest to my mom to help her keep the house, a lot of money then in 1957,I felt like a millionaire, well I had heard he had the old Austin and he was getting a larger truck so he was selling car, it cost me £11, which then was a lot of money, wow I got petrol from him and drove it home, I stayed outside our village and when got home checked it all over,it was a side valve engine, the roof was able to roll back
there was a handle to wind open the windscreen, had steel bumpers, and the spare wheel sat in small area at the boot, you had to fold a part out to put your suitcases on.it had a chrome headlamp and sidelamp on each wing, and the Austin badge on bonnet at front and written on grille also,it had 2 doors and a runner board, and a starting handle at front you had to wind up to start, you had to hold it a special way, because if engine kicked back you could break your thumb,
,I remember it had a winder wiper no electric winders then or washers, and no indicators hand signals only, after driving home that day I was hooked,,Im sure it had what was called a governor on carb so you couldnt drive like crazy hohohohoho, I remember mines was fixed by an elastic band by a guy that knew about cars, those were the days, no cares, bald tyres in a way its better with MOTs,once I had a car that tracked and I hadnt a clue what tracking was, each time i put on new tyres next day they were bald hohohoho, you learnt as you drove in those days,as years went on I had many kinds of Austins, A60 Van,Austin cambridge, Austin 16,
Austin 125 princess,Austin 10, 30,35,how men got into the wee 35 , I never know of course I was skinny runt then,Glad to say I never owned an Allegro, or a 1100, 1800, or the modern princess they had a sloping front roof,Of course all Austins were British and great cars, not like today.

Best at the time
had nowhere to store when had to move
