Biggest heap of junk on the road. Bought my 2.5 diesel sport on Sunday, drove it home and watched the fuel gauge needle drop. It was thirsty. Parked it up, went to go out in it for the first time today (Tuesday) and it won't start. It's only done 76000 miles, which I suppose is a lot for a heap of junk. My old peugeot 405 TD estate wheich the frontera was supposed to replace, started up first time as it has always done for the last 3 years despite having 185000 on the clock (the previous one was 248000!).
Vauxhall motors should be downright ashamed at ever having produced this heap of manure. Only had mine 2 days and I've listed it on ebay and good riddance!!!!
No wonder there is a dedicated frontera owners forum. With all the problems it is a place to share your sorrows and speak to other deluded fools who bought a frontera.
Every time I look at mine I think "there is an F in frontera"!!

um.....er.....

Had a 94 Sport for a couple of years ( before swapping for a Freelander - what a mistake ! ) - it was actually my 4th Frontera but first Sport. Only faults during that time were worn bushes on the rear leaf springs - it took me longer to jack the car up than to actually replace the bushes - and a failed alternator at 86000 miles.
Only gripe is it could have done with a bit more power ( later ones have a 2.2 or 3.2 engine though ). Fun in summer with moonroof and rear windows removed ! Wouldn't mind another - would be interesting to drop a Calibra Turbo engine into one as an experiment :-)

hi i have a 2.0 sport i find it to be great fun,but on reading other reviewes about the engine management light coming on and the engine cutting out i have also had these problems but this is easily fixed with a bit of light sand paper and a coating of wd40 just under the bonnet next to the passenger side headlight is a small black relay if you withdraw the relay you will find the contact points will have some rust and dirt on them causing a bad connection just rub these down gently and coat with wd40 or duck oil replace the relay and your on your way

Into my fourth year of ownership of Dec. 1996 Frontera Sport so I guess I do know something about them! The main thing is not to let them near a Vauxhall mechanic! Mechanically the car has been faultless as it is just a Cavalier engine attached to a part-time 4 wheel drive system. Bodily it could have been so much better with rattles and squeaks that I have rectified myself. The interior design and rear plasticky compartment not very good although certainly a comfy car. The moonroof and removable windows are a design joke! Towing ability? Yes, for a family caravan, gardener's trailer, average stock trailer etc. For towing say a vehicle on a flat bed - no! Off road ability? Probably one of the best 'soft roaders' off road, although like Isuzus there are some pretty heavy grounding shields underneath that indicate drawbacks. Pre 1995 models have leaf springs all round, handle like a brick and had appalling reliability problems. From 95 onwards things started to drastically get better and Fronteras certainly do not have the catastrophic faults reported by owners of Freelanders. On a final not I also own a 97 LWB 5 door 16 valve Vitara which if the Frontera had been built to 75% of this standard of reliability and design it would have been so much better.

We bought our Frontera Sport at 2 1/2 years old mainly as a runaround and for school runs in Rural Devon - perfect for seeing over the hedges and for not getting stuck in muddy gateways. However we have been plagued by electrical problems. It started with the alarm going off in the middle of the night. We had four trips to the dealers before this was sorted. You can't disable the alarm without unlocking the car. The petrol gauge then started to show near empty regularly. We are about to have our third trip to the dealers to have this fault rectified. The next fault was that the airbag failure light started to come on. A proposed two hour wait at the dealers for this fault turned into a 6 hour wait and another days work lost (you have to book 3 - 4 weeks ahead at the Vauxhall dealers to get a courtesy car). We have just had our second general engine managment failure (this is an orange light on the dashboard) which has prompted me to write this review. This car could be so good, but there is no way that I would buy another one. My other car is an 8 year old Isuzu Trooper which has never had any reliability problems apart from a flat battery (I wish the kids would shut the doors). The Frontera should be as good as it was designed by Isuzu.

Have not had the car long, but found to be very good value for the money spent. What other 4x4 could I have bought with some modern style... none..! Problems: Water leak on rear window seal to repair. Exhaust leak (aged). Plus points: Reasonable on fuel. Plenty of room inside, loads of rear leg room.

I am coming to the 5th year of ownership on my 2.0L 96 frontera sport, that i purchased purely for the styling, being in my oppinion the best looking softroader on the road...
the car is beatiful inside and has the biggest back seat area iv seen. the driver position is is very comfortable if you like long drives.

But just over a yr ago i identified a fault related to the engine managment, that was obviously written by a 5yr old it would seem.
The orange light on my dash board every now and again will light up and then after a few seconds it may or may not go off. The car will also just suddenly stop aswell, which when u are on a busy motorway and suddenly loose all drive, aint very nice...
the car may or may not restart after 30mins or so depending if the engine managment has reset itself.

I had this happen on 3 different journeys before i could get the car to a garage, and being foolish i thought it would be wise to take an engine managment fault to the manufacturer, and so i took it to my local dealer in oswestry who attempted to test my car with their equipment.
I am then told there their equipment does not pick up many faults and my chip reported in a passed, and so they recommend that i replace the engine management chip (costing near £900 fitted).
reluctantly i do this to get my car back on the road but to my disgust, i then have the same problem a further 3 more times and i had 2 more tow in charges.

when the car was eventually taken back to the garage, vauxhall tell me that it could be summut else causing the fault and try to get me to buy even more parts.
they also refused to absorb the cost of fitting a part that they had deemed failed on my car when i asked to replace it. why i should pay for bafoons to work i dont know. no other company would charge for summut i did not need.
they were never able to determine the real cause of my fault and i was able to get them to replace my original engine management chip eventually but i only got £300 pounds back.
with mu old chip replaced it took a whil;e to get confidence back in my car but i did eventually and all summer its been soo reliable i thought it had worked its way out...

Whats led me to write this report is that last night it happened again goin home from work :(
and then this morning it wont start at all. All summer and yr its been fine
flamin vauxhall i wouldnt buy a bike from them any more.
and as for there diagnostics support, its disgusting, i wouldnt take a wheelbarrow in to be fixed by em.
i will continue now to search for electrical frontera faults online cos i believe i have more chance of solving this fault than vauxhall do...
