I had wanted an older car for ages - took advice froma friend and considered a number of options old fast car (too embarressing); classic car (not responsible or caring enough towards motors); an ironic car (renault twingo anyone?) but cam down to the Mercedes 190 as a tough but classy beast. My advisor tracked one down and bought it - K reg 190E auto with lovely dark pink metallic paint, alloys, electrics, nice stereo and the gunsight badge intact for £500. That is an awful lot of car for not very much money - why buy new? A new exhaust, service and away I went. I had never driven one before but always admired the shape from a distance. The 190 is lovely to drive with the engine/auto gearbox combination a joy. It moves away like a galleon under sail but can go like a destroyer if pressed hard. Some unkind friends have described it as 'an old man's car' and even a 'Cortina in a frock' but I love her and will never be unfaithful. The steering is wonderful (my parking has improved a lot), seats comfortable and interior and exterior great for its 135000 miles. I thank the previous owners and promise to look after this precious car for many years to come.
One extra point - the complete original first aid kit is in the rear parcel shelf and contains enough bandages to cope with a major incident. The German engineers must have thought, 'if there's an accident - you will survive and others will need your help'
motorway cruising, parking, auto gearbox (best ever?), an unusual combination of neatness and grandeur in its design
enormous steering wheel makes it a bit difficult to get into
