My Daihatsu Grand Move is now 9 years old, I have had it for 6 years and it has never broken down or cost much money to keep on the road. The mechanic does grumble about it he says it is far too good because he knows he wont see it again for another year. For its size there is a great deal of space inside, there is more leg room in the back than a 5 series BMW, and it can comfortably tow a four berth caravan or a trailer with half a ton of building materials. There is also decent ground clearance so driving across a muddy farmyard or a field is no problem. OK, the interior is cheaply finished and plasticky and there are one or two annoying rattles but nothing a tube of silicone and a few pieces of foam padding wont fix. Nor is it a great motorway drive as it runs out of legs at higher cruising speeds, but stay within the legal speed limit and it will return close to 40 mpg. One day I will need to replace it, probably not because it is worn out but because parts are too difficult to get. Before Christmas I needed a new rear exhaust box. The main dealer quoted circa £150 for parts and fitting. A local tractor mechanic said he could make a copy of the original for £50, from stock parts. I eventually found one on the net for £45.
