Deja vu - they did it with Red and Blue and then they did it with Gold and Silver. Just when you've made up your mind which of the two versions to buy, along comes another version with added extras. Talk about squeezing money out of customers!
The added extra in this one is Pokemon Tower - as place to battle (and usually lose) against various trainers in order to win prizes.
That aside, this is a nice game set in Johto, with opportunity to visit Kanto after the Johto regions have all been visited and dealt with.
There's an irritating familiarity about The Gold, Silver and Crystal versions - Professor Elm replaces Professor Oak from the Red, Blue and Yellow games (although you see Oak later), you have a rival who is always one step behind you (or ahead of you if all is not well with your training) with his pokemon who just happens to be the element of your pokemon's weakness, and other things which are just too similar.
Overall, though, this is a nice game which provides entertainment, challenges and interest in different ways with extras along the way if you feel like taking a break from the main game.
Interesting, fun, long-lived, challenging, a fair bit of variety.
The usual problem of too many pokemon in long grass, caves etc. legendary dogs are virtually impossible to catch.
