SEAT Ibiza 20VT Sport (Cupra in UK)

Almost from day one, I am experiencing all kinds of problems with my car. Here is a list of all things registered 'till now –

1. 15 Km - The car was received with a nonfunctional spare tire. I fixed it myself at a Tire Shop. Due to strange noises from the back seat, I had to dismantle it just to find loose screws and washers inside!

2. 4057 Km - The tailgate's Central locking System electric motor has stuck. The door had to be opened from inside the car. A new electric motor was installed.

3. 4570 Km - The rear brake disks squeaked terribly and were taken care of.

4. 5200Km - An intermittent cold start up problem was diagnosed. The ECU was changed at 7060 Km.

5. 7060 Km - The window regulator in the driver's side was changed due to strange knocking sounds during operation.

6. 7100 Km - The rear right side mirror was changed due to a problem with the Ambient Temperature Sensor in wet conditions. This problem still exists. The Autoclima is very slow to react to sharp changes in sun glare, probably due to the lack of a Photoelectric Sun Glare Sensor in this system. The wrong readings of the Ambient Temperature Sensor when wet just make things even worse.

7. The Secondary Air Pump should start to work at 5 deg C in every cold start-up cycle. In fact, it was confirmed by the Garage to start only above 15 deg C.

8. 9413 Km - The tailgate's central locking system electric motor has stuck again! A new electric motor was installed for the second time! It is still doing some strange noises when in cold weather, as if it is going to stuck again.

9. 9413 Km - The inside handle on the passenger's side has started to peel off. A new one was installed.

10. 9413 Km - The plastic pins securing the plastic front seat covers on both sides have broken and new plastic covers were installed.

11. 9530 Km - The passenger's side electric button window switch has a problem. The light from the Diode inside turns off whenever this window is closed from the driver's switch. It was found that the problem is in the electric loom design!!!

12. The car paint is very prone to stone chipping especially in the front bonnet and has to be touched up constantly.

13. 12,000 Km - The clutch cluster was changed under warranty. It was squeaking badly in every pedal depress.

14. 13,000 Km - A knocking is felt and heard when steering the car. Stationary or in drive. After a lot of parts changing the VAG Service gave up and gave me a letter confirming that the problem exsists and that they will take care of it if and whenever they find its source!

15. 18,500 Km - Had a problem of flunctuating boost once. VAG Service did not find its source. There is no problem now.

16. 19,000 Km - The front wipers have peeled off. I Changed them, including the talegate's. I have installed a set of VALEO wipers. Original parts for GOLF IV . They are of better quality!

17. Sometimes the Blipper is going in a fast pace when turning the car to the right. Probably a bad connection in the wheel drive stalk. I could not replicate the problem when in the garrage.

THAT'S ALL FALKS!!!

My next car? MAZDA Miata, MX-5!

Small car with a big car feel. Responds well. Had it 3 years and it was 4 years old when I got it. Paid $A14,000. It was better on test drive than the new Japanese comparables at the time. Hasn't had a breakdown and only had to replace brake pads. It goes wherever I want, and is easy to park when I get there! Love it.

I paid £50 for mine 6 months ago,
a 1991
mk1 903cc 3 door. Its slooooow and
noisy, but very cheap to run -
47mpg, £100 r/tax, cheap ins. Very
roomy, not
brilliant to drive, but starts
instant-
ly every morning, and can be fixed
with
a knife and fork! Well worth a
look.

1.4SXE bought as a 2yr old in 1999
for about 6 grand. 3 door version
better for security. Has sunroof,
power steering, electric windows
and stiffened suspension. Add to
this a CD player with very
powerful speakers, alarm and a set
of alloys and you have a hatchback
with sex appeal!! Even with a 1.4
engine, it goes like the clappers
and is cheaper to tax. All in
all, a great little car.
