OK, so these cars are dirt cheap to pick up now, nippy, a decent size and not bad looking. I've had three Rovers, 2 of which have been mk2 200s. I'm on my second one now (a "friend" stuck the first one in a ditch and bent the chassis!) The first one was a 214SEi and I now have a 220GSi. Both cars are quick for their engine capacities and I've not really had reliability problems at all. The one thing I have had is that the 220 does seem to enjoy it's oil. These cars are also easily modified, get in touch with moto-build in Hounslow for tuning/styling products. Personally, I've left mine stock, fast enough for the time being for me! No electrical problems encountered, only things I've had to replace are the usual suspects - tyres, exhaust and brakes. And none of them were too expensive either.
Furthermore to my 1994 214sei problems the ecu related work on the immobilser/ecu cost around 300 quid. & to top it off the battery discharges every 3-4 days apparently a further defect related to the ecu units. If anyone else is having similiar ecu/engine starting problems these are the websites to see: http://www.bba-reman.com/engine_management.htm http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk/rover.html good luck hope is of some help meanwhile im back in temp car whisly my nightmares continue.
I have 420gsi turbo! It rocks have done a few bits too it zorst ,lowerd, k&n, battery in boot , new boost control, new dump valve, It whoops most cars on the road.... hahaha i love it
Had a 214SLi from new.Its 10 year old now.I am now having starting problems.Sometimes it starts sometimes it does not.Had it to a garage they said wipe the distributor head when damp.No change.Put a new battery in -no change Called the AA out- it started and told nothing wrong.Help
I brought my 214Sei 1994(m)reg 18 months ago, and I have to be completely honest with u lot the K series engine obviously rocks as it is a lightweight engine based on sports engine technology in the late 1980's early 1990's. Yes the engine is fantasic for its fuel consumption and throaty performance. My rover is completely standard in all respects the half leather seats are lush and the interior competes still with the new rover series being sold today. Bearing in mind i bought the car with 69k and it currently has 86k. So far i have replaced the following parts. :( Both Rear trailing arm bushes and bearings, New radiator, 2 new alternators as the first one from rover was defective, rear box & mid exhaust section.(the catylst is also on the way out). New central Door locks and control box cause the car kept locking me out, and then the gear box went and recently (for the last 6weeks actually) the immbiliser/ecu unit wont let me start the car. I have done everything to find a solution to this, but having no option to replace the ECU unit myself at a cost of 150 quid. plus 120 pounds for the recovery service to Rover in Bath who still to date dont know what is wrong with it. Signed one person who wont be buying a rover again!
I have a 200 VI 99 plate with 34k mls, however for some reason in the morning it does not want to tick over, when first started. After a few attempts at starting it, and a few revs, it's fine. I think it could be something to do with the auto choke or temp sender, any ideas? Apart from that the car is really cool, handles well, 0-60 is rapid - this has to be the first problem
Hey i have a rover 216 GSi, bought it a year ago after having driven my dad's. I am paritcularilly interested in Flash's 216 as he has managed to pull out 200bhp from a 1.6! I tired emailing you flash but there is no address, mine should be published can you please email me on what it is you have done to your car to pull out that power?
Woops I skim read, the thing below is an accident :
Anyways, to the guy on about insurance, I am 21 years of age (Date OfBirth= 3/4/1982) with 1 SP30 (got caught doing 60 in a 50 zone) I have held a licence less than a year, I told my insurance my car is kept in a garage and that I do < 4k a year, I have access to 3 other cars in my family. I have held a provisional since I was 16. I have told my insurance that I have no modifications to my vehicle. I also had quite high voluntary excesses and told them my car was worth less than £2000
I am with norwich union, fully comp. £820 they quoted me with legal ins and cover and all the other little crappy extras (save breakdown stuff). My sister (who works for them) rang me (after my mum told her I was with the company she ((my sister)) worked for ((norwich union)) and she told me could reduce my monthly payments from 66quid a month for 10 months to 53 quid, a saving of about 133quid or somat.
With some ins places fully comp is actually cheaper than 3rd party, people on 3rd party usually drive like idiots and don't care about their car
I strongly recommend norwich union, and not because my sister works for them, simply because they ARE really that good.
I have lowered my new car (95 M reg nightfire red, colour coded bumpers, 214 DOHC MPI 5 door hatch SEI) with new system 2 40mm lowering springs, same 4.5inch straight through rage backbox and the same 205/40/17 TSW alpines. My insurance don't know about said mods yet.
I have been told that I can expect to increase my insurance premium by 10% each modification (so 30% for 3 mods, like lowering, aftermarket alloys and aftermarket exhaust). I have also been told that after 3 mods norwich union are unlikely to want to insure me, I stongly suggest ringing up before hand anonymously and saying what you wanna do to the car (mod etc) and what your circumstances are and see if they will insure you. If they will then you should be looking at about £650-750 for the standard M reg 214SEI if your circumstances are similiar to mine plus about 10% per modification.
I hope this helped. And shop around, quote low when they ask you about other offeres you've had, even to the point where you think they won't be able to beat your "made up" premium, I put money on the fact they'll beat it, they want your cash! In their eyes your drive a rover, an old mans car, not a nova or a saxo or an escort. Good luck and play the system. They play you plenty.
Ive had a rover 216 gti for 4 years now and never had a problem with it i just make sure it gets 2 oil changes a year and theres loads of performance parts avaiable at the moment mines running nearley 200 bhp of the 1.6 single cam, theres more than enough tuning parts avaiable so ill include my email address so if your having any problems getting perfomance parts just let me know and ill do my best to get u a price and where u can get it from.

Take a look at http://www.moto-build.com (i've included the page as a link) they have a smart Komodo kit which I think will fit. Am in the process of savin for one myself. As for induction kits, ain't had any luck findin one yet.
***NEED HELP*** ***NEED HELP*** BOUGHT ROVER 214S AROUND 6 MONTHS AGO NO PROBLEMS JUST WONDERING IF ANY ONE KNOWS IF I CAN CHANGE MY FRONT SEATS FOR THE LEATHER ONES IN A 214SEI.
ALSO THERE WAS A POST Submitted by: tom baldry, 6 December 2003 - WHICH MENTIONED HIS INSURANCE. TOM IF YOU READ THIS CAN YOU LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU GET YOUR INSURANCE FROM AS I AM PAYING £1300 THIRD PARTY I HAVE NO NCB PUT HAVE A PASS PLUS.
I've had a rover 200vi for the last year, and its a great car in some ways. The engine is excellent, with a great spread of power and more than enough go to see off your saxos and golfs. However in terms of handling the power steering is too active so you don't get a great feeling for the road, and also the ride is not quite firm enough when driven hard. However my biggest problem with it is the bloomin knocking noise from the back, which reading these reviews leads me to believe it is the exhaust hitting the shocks. Very annoying!!. Overall, a great understated car, but like nearly every other k-series, i need a new headgasket at 65000 quite hard miles. Still love it though.
Have to say the rovers and k series engines are far better then most other cars.Being a mechanic (not a rover one) lol i have had three rover 214's and they are so damn quick and reliable. unfortunalt they are prone to head gasket failure but thats only 100 quid in bits. btw if its the first time a headgasket as gone don't let ur garage sting u for new headbolts £9 each x10 bolts. There is measurement to check how much they have stretched. Hope this helps at the minute i have a ford escort and i am not impressed with it at all it has nearly rusted through and its only 5 years old!!!! stick with rover!!!!!
Hey i have a 214 sei.i have looked at your reviews, a lot of you seem to have problems. i have had mine for a few months but i have had no problems. i am now thinking of tuning it up. i was just wondering if anyone has had an k&n induction kit put in. if you have can you please leave a message on here with what you think of it. i am not sure wather to buy it or not. also do any of you know where you can get a good body kit for it and a good exhaust sytem. cheers guys.
I have 2 Rover 214SLi 16v - both white - one 'H' Plate 160k and one "L" Plate 73k - the headgasket was weeping on the l reg so i decided to have the head off, refaced new cambelt & water pump just in case - got the damn thing back together today and wont start - either compression or timing - dont have a compression gauge - anyone know any quick way to check the timing isnt 180 degrees out???
