Have recently bought a restored R100T. It is comfortable, handles and is respectably fast in a lazy torquey way, which is my favourite way. Set it up for a corner right and its a very rewarding and efficiently fun way of covering ground. Better when in 4th and 5th on A roads, as in town the shaft drive makes the back lift and drop by about an inch or two, and you need to be aware of the old shaft drive pulling to one side a little. Its just fantastic character. I couldn't find a new bike to match the feeling of riding a bike with such a comfortable quality feel. Amazed me for a 28 year old bike. It looks handsome in its two tone red/silver with gold pinstripe. Pure class, 45-55 mpg and cruises at 80, niiiiice.
These bikes are called 'airheads'. They are dead relaible. examples with 100,000 miles or more are common. Handling is steady, and solid, not necessarily nimble. These 1000cc bikes weigh less than the same size bikes from other builders. Transmissions are notchy but seem to last forever. The dry clutch lasts 30,000 miles and is easy to replace. There is an extremely active owners group airheads.org that can assist the new owner with issues. Parts availablity is excellent because of many models have common components. The price of a BMW will be more than a UJM, but even a bike with 100,000 miles couls be good for another round trip provided the frame is solid and some of the internals have been overhauled. This bike is no rocket... but will easily cruise at 75 mph and has no bad habits.
